Ashen

Ashen

This game deserves way more love!

I hardly ever see anyone talking about it, and I really don’t know why it’s so under the radar…

It has almost everything I seek in a Souls-like:

  • Very good combat and animations;

  • Incredible athmosfere;

  • A lot of exploration.

I must say this review will seem quite negative, but that’s simply because I tend to remember things I dislike way more than things I like in pretty much everything I consume. But that doesn’t necessarily mean my overall opinion is bad… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Tl;dr after finishing the game (and the DLC), including the Children of Sissna mode. Steam really needs a yellow sideways thumb, but since there isn’t one, this goes into the not recommended bargain bin if you want to check it when it’s on sale. Greatly unepic after shedding the mantle of Epic exclusivity. It earns enormous merits in art, visuals, sound direction and world building. But it’s marred by iffy, erratic and sluggish combat, janky hitboxes, mostly terrible AI companions, unrewarding exploration and levelling, overabundance of weapons that don’t make much difference, an atrocious final boss and something called the Children of Sissna mode, which is anything but a fair game. It boggles me that anyone thought that would make for a fun experience. And all of this, somewhat miraculously, still makes it an okish game inspired by a long line of soulslikes. But not a great recommendation.

This is a SERIOUS review.

PROS:

-good graphics for the player character.

-fair graphics for the world

CONS:

-controls took a lot to get used to. Standard WASD & Space for Roll but no real jump ability which poses an issue later in levels 4 and 5 specifically as you would encounter fences you would like to jump over.

-map layout is bland. most are just rectangles with assets in between. Lots of invisible barriers.

-MOST IMPORTANTLY there is NO gameplay. You get the achievements not by killing the hordes or the dragon but by smashing the bottle that is ALWAYS behind the dragon.

Since my last, long review got a bunch of dislikes I’ll keep this one short.

It ended up not being short though. Oh well. Since the 1.1 update came out it got even longer.

Necropolis looks awesome, sounds awesome, plays average, has no content… unless you stick with it past the first few samey runs, and unlock a ton more more content. The more you play the more shit you unlock for the procedural generator to throw at you, the more secrets get added to the areas you explore, and the deeper into the Necropolis you go the more each subsequent level goes from linear to downright labyrinthian.

Removing the procedurally generated aspect from the beloved roguelite seems like a risk, and it is – but with careful game design, Handmadedeathlabyrinth delivers: through incisively selected data that carries over across runs, and a dungeon that goes by faster and faster as you learn its inner workings, a convincing argument is made that procedural generation isn’t necessarily integral to the roguelite feeling. And learning is indeed the name of the game here: studying how traps and enemies work – trying new methods of handling what’s thrown at you – is a delightful journey of discovery. From start to finish, barring extra content, the game is only 30 (not quite 10!) minutes or so.

I purchased the full 10 Minute Game Collection and am going to play them in the order they appear in my library. That means this is #4 of 10.

Know in advance what you are getting. As the collection title suggests, a ten minute game is not a triple A title. It is a short game-jam-esque proof of concept / working prototype / execution of an idea. At least that’s what I’m going to infer from first impressions.

So far the quality of these little 10 minute games has been superb. Let me say this from the outset; this game is a mini masterpiece.

Brume

Brume

I’m completely smitten by this little piece of gaming art that was put on my radar by Rock, Paper, Shotgun. It’s Dark Souls dissolved to an extremely slim form. An intense, bite-sized soulslike dance of simple, obscure, but effective mechanics, jazzy visuals, stylish cinematics, moody sounds, weird camera angles and stiff legs. It deserves to be played by every Dark Souls fan and every Dark Souls fan owes it to themselves to play this. Scratch that, everyone should play this just for the vision Sokpop brings to the medium of video games. Have I mentioned I’m totally smitten by this little game?

The premise of Brume is as simple as it is unexplained. You control a nameless character in a new and strange land, Why are you here? Who knows. Venture forth. There is no dialogue in the game, but that only builds the atmosphere.

As the game begins, the first thing that struck me was the askew angles used in the cut-scenes to build an unsettling atmosphere. It creates a vague feeling of discomfort and unease; of something just not being right. The muted colour scheme, low poly-count and soft soundscape create a beautiful little world to get lost in for an hour or two.

The best rage platformer game I played for a long time. The characters are loveable, the bosses are resembling the old NES games in hardness. You definitely need to take a look at this masterpiece!

Chronos: Before the Ashes

Chronos: Before the Ashes

A good Souls-like, but too many puzzles…

The game has a very interesting progression system where-by each time you die, you get stronger, until your reach about 35 deaths, then you start getting weaker… that’s because each time you die, you grow older (until age 80, when you just stay 80). You also unlock new passive talents at 10 deaths, 20 deaths, 30 deaths, etc. but they become a drawback as you reach old age since at old age ‘Arcane’ combat is favored instead of Strength/Agility. This is a very innovative system and one that I haven’t seen in any game I’ve played before.

Chronos wasn’t what I was expecting and it took a little bit of a warm up to fully immerse myself into it, but it was a very enjoyable delve into the ashes world again.

After playing Remnant: From the Ashes, seeing the release of the prequel caught my interest so I bought myself a copy and now find myself here. It took me a while but now I’m fairly certain I can recommend this title.

The game starts a tad slow with a few hard cut area transitions in lifts and a momentary entrance into the remains of the modern world in the ashes universe before throwing you into the actual gameplay. After a good hour or so, I still felt as though the combat was rather slow but this evolved over time to become very enjoyable as I learned the attack patterns of the enemies one by one and began overcoming everything Chronos threw at me.

Davyria: Heroes of Eternity

Davyria: Heroes of Eternity

Overall, I recommend Davyria, but I don’t think it would suit everyone. The combat is very challenging, and requires a lot of practice and many deaths to become accustomed to.

A key component of the game is the boss fights. There is 12 total boss fights and they each are extremely hard. It took me at least ten times on most fights to defeat the bosses. Much of the game’s excitement and reward revolves around these boss fights, and at times they can be frustrating. My general strategy for boss fights was to try and learn the attack patterns of each boss, and find out after which attacks he or she was left exposed. Most bosses were vulnerable after certain attacks. You should try and find a way to break down boss fights because they are the cornerstone of the game.

Updated - This game was abandoned and never really finished. It has major balancing issues. It is okay, but needlessly frustrating. It is a shame the developer gave up.

As of now, I am five hours in and trying to beat the third of 11 bosses. I am a Dark Souls junkie so I wanted to try this game out. It’s a solid isometric dark souls. Skills and equipment are simplified compared to dark souls. Killing enemies gives you XP that you spend at shrines to level up. When leveling, you can increase either strength, agility, health or stamina. When you die, you lose half of any unsaved XP and it is gone forever. By resting at a shrine you can save your XP so it isn’t lost when you die.
