Paper Pirates

Paper Pirates

A great social deduction game to play with friends or family. Lots of fun and easy to pick up no matter what age the players are. The artwork is a delight and it has a huge number of customisation options to make your pirate your own.

There are different game modes which allow you to vary the difficulty - scored games adding that extra challenge with secret objectives; is that player a ghost or are they just a bad human trying to max out their points? The daily voyage is a nice way to try out different modes and you can fill the boat with cute bots if you are playing solo. You can earn achievements to unlock cool hats for your pirates and the events change things up including the option of an audience mode for people who don’t want to play . The audience can vote to influence what events take place. It’s a nice touch that really does make this a very inclusive game. Iteration games has stepped things up a notch with the current Halloween event. Who wouldn’t want to play as a skeleton or pumpkin pirate! Highly recommended.

Iteration Games clearly understands the Social Deduction genre very well, and the result is Paper Pirates sidestepping a majority of the problems I find in other similar games.

Paper Pirates succeeds at both being a game that’s simple enough to convince your friends to pick up, yet has enough mechanical depth and just the right pinch of randomness to keep the suspense high all the way until the last treasure falls overboard, or everyone gets home.

Things like traditional mafia/werewolf’s follow the cop strategies, Town of Salem’s vulnerability to mass-claiming, and the rigidity of Secret Hitler’s mechanics in general lead to a highly-optimized “metagame” (a specific strategy that most players familiar with a game employ almost always due to how extremely effective it is) that doesn’t really appeal to everyone, and can be especially grating to newcomers. Not to mention how being voted out in all of the above means you’re forced into the role of spectator for the rest of the game, and the first person eliminated essentially doesn’t get to play at all. Paper Pirates solves this by instead demoting players voted out to the rank of stowaway; you cannot win as the stowaway, but all it takes to escape the dreaded barrel is for another player to go overboard and fill it in your stead. And believe me, plenty of pirates will be getting flung off this paper ship.

Saboteur

Saboteur

In a game of one versus up to six other players both teams need to use observational skills and planning to succeed.

There are 12 objectives spread across three floors. You have 30 minutes. There are 6 Security Forces and the Saboteur only needs 6 objectives to win. Play too passive as Security and you lose.

Play too aggressively as the Saboteur and you’ll give yourself away.

Security has to be careful though, kill a scientist and the Saboteur wins. Kill the Saboteur and you win. If the Saboteur can’t get enough objectives in time Security wins.

The Saboteur

  • You have to achieve your objective of sabotaging enough critical areas while blending in with the AI controlled scientists. Don’t draw any unwanted attention. Observe and mimic the scientists.

  • You have several tools to your advantage, like the ability to sabotage lights and doors among others.

  • With greater mobility you can outmanoeuvre Security Forces if you play smart.

Security Forces

  • Deduce the identity of the Saboteur by observing the scientists.

  • Patrol and defend the critical stations from sabotage.

  • Work together with the rest of the Security Force, communication is key.

Perfectly Balanced

Perfectly Balanced

Although very simple, the game’s proposal is very solid “Distribute the weights in the remaining blocks”. It was a longer game play than I expected, but it was a plus for me as the game has a window mode so I just played casually while doing other things.

Similo: The Card Game

Similo: The Card Game

Fun co-op card game that support both local and online multiplayer!

PROs:

  • Awesome illustrations

  • Supports cross platform multiplayer

  • Great replayability (especially with DLCs)

CONs:

  • I want more decks!!!

Real player with 160.0 hrs in game

The online option is very limited (only 1v1, no realtime matchmaking), and the local pass-n-play does not offer a blanked out between screen to have time to switch. All in all, I was very disappointed by the limited options for actuall play this game gives.

In addition to these grievances, if someone has bought an expansion (like the historic characters) and sets up a game with it, you cannot play it unless you buy it as well!

And we’ve not even touched upon the interface…

Agrou

Agrou

Absolutely a dead game, but I’m still recommending it because I know that can change. It’s still a fun game, and it has a lot of potential. If you’re on the fence about buying this game, go ahead and do it. Servers might not always be open but when there are it’s a fun time.

! So most of the negative reviews don’t recommend the game because it’s dead. I mean, yeah, that’s a valid reason, but it doesn’t help solve the problem.

Real player with 256.6 hrs in game

a very fun game to play with friends, its still a very new game so they keep adding new roles which makes the game more challenging. the roles are fun to play with and every game feels special. the part where you betray your friends is always the best part and makes me laugh. so if you love deception games and if you love to betray your friends, this is the game for you.

Do you love social deduction games like Mafia, Werewolf, The Resistance and Secret Hitler? We do too! But we noticed some shortcomings in the genre. They are sometimes hard to set up and inconvenient to play. Some games need too much room or a big table, some require a moderator with godlike precision, some require to close your eyes for minutes, and quite often the game is ruined because someone forgot to do their part correctly or a newbie player asked the wrong question and revealed their secret. We have built Republic of Jungle to address to these issues and distill the fun of social deduction games into a more enjoyable and convenient experience. Inspired by Jackbox Games, we have built a platform where players can use their smartphones (or any device with a browser) to play the game. This way, the game does all the moderation for you, guides the players throughout the game and adds a fun narrative on top. More importantly, we have unique mechanics specific to this platform because they are almost impossible to implement in a traditional tabletop setting.

Escape Mind

Escape Mind

edit: a couple more patches got rid of most technical problems, so I removed them from the review.

a short and simple point & click where your goal is to escape from a house you end up in after chasing a rabbit around. fortunately, there’s no time limit or fail states and you can save anywhere. some light puzzling and a few arcadey parts, but revisiting locations over and over is a must, as new things keep appearing. moving around is fast enough though, so it’s not an issue.

As an addict of puzzle/escape games I was excited to find this game. It took me 1hr 15m to complete, but was pretty fun! Great value at $0.99. Also I thought the art style was cool. Hope there’s a sequel!
