SkateBIRD

SkateBIRD

EDIT: I have yet to try the patch out, but seeing that they put one out so quickly makes me much more hopeful for this games future. Additionally, once you manage to get past the first ~4 missions, it is a pretty fun and very cute game. I’m really looking forward to trying it out with the patch.

–————————————————–

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to like this game. I’ve been super excited for its release, and was THRILLED when I saw it was out! But I’m pretty disappointed so far. The character select is adorable and I love it so much. But the game itself is incredibly frustrating. Every time you crash into something, the camera gets stuck when you get back on the board so you can’t easily turn away from what you just crashed into. This and other issues make it WAY too difficult to complete the first few missions because you spend so much time trying to work around the awkward controls and camera bugs. The first missions at least should be easier. I can’t get into it when I can’t accomplish anything from the very start. I really hope the developers will do something about this.

SkateBird is a very interesting game, both in the idea and final product. A game where you play as a bird that skates around on a tiny skateboard across 5 open levels where you take missions from other birds to advance the story. Really speaks for itself, but it is at least very cute in how it’s all executed. I enjoyed the game myself as someone who loves birds and likes skateboarding games in general like Tony Hawk. Though a game like this isn’t near the same quality as say Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and or 4, but I still have to give credit where credit is due, there are plenty of settings to change how you prefer to play, with adjustments on skating speed, handling, braking, etc. There are also plenty of bird skins to choose from, they even had one of a “Quaker Parrot” skin, which I own as a pet, so I how could I NOT say no to that. :3

OlliOlli

The Skateboarding game we deserve.

Detailed yet simple control scheme weighing importance to timing while remaining fair and not very dexterity heavy. An immense emphasis on the joystick offers a myriad of tricks to try out for players but I’ve only been able to try out a handfull of them by the time I even finished all the levels. Trying out more tricks makes sense because your score depends on what trick you perform but given the dexterity requirement, it’s gonna take more than a hand full of tries to remember and make use of them in the game. That is my only complaint but then again, I can only spare so much time for gaming these days, that’s just me.

Reminiscing the age of Tony Hawk’s Pro skater, OlliOlli is an objective based skateboarding game that re-imagines the 3D formulae into a retro 2D side-scroller. Originally developed for the PS Vita by Roll7 – the windows port up-scales the game whilst offering a similar experience. But does it grind past its contemporaries or face-plant into failure?

The games primary feature is a single player career mode. This is split across 5 distinct areas each divided into 5 courses. Your tasked with completing each course to unlock the next with increasing difficulty as you progress.

The game is great, for someone like me who has always been addicted to skateboarding.. If you are a skater you will play this game all day. If you are a gamer who wants a challenge this game wont last long. I think its the best skate game on PC even with how basic it is. My only problem is that the game is lacking some basic tricks such as board slides, lip slides, feebles. The game is new and cheap so lets hop they keep up with updates so ones day the game will have more but I see endless opportunity especially with the PC community, if they could add a way the community can make levels it would be great. Some flip tricks are missing as well, laserflips are missing and 360 shuvits. overall Id say for the price its a must have.

Longboard Stunts and Tricks

Devs didn’t put their effort into making this game so I won’t put mine into writing this review:

Glitchy, bad mechanics, bad graphics, ok idea but should’ve left others that know what they are doing to put it in practice.

Achievements can be eventually unlocked. Beware that if you’re having issues with the “Mission Possible” you need to tweak your in-game graphics settings as well as the refresh rate of your monitor (if you have more than 60hz).

This game is total crap. There is some hilarity to be found in that, but it wears off pretty quickly as the controls are absolutely awful. I would advise you to stick to the Tony Hawk pro skater games for your skateboard fix!

Hoverboard Chase

Hoverboard Chase

Hoverboard Chase isn’t a game. It’s a paid demo with the most barebones of features: Ten tracks that all look alike, endlessly spawning enemies to dodge, no opponents to race against, no timer, and no score table or rewards. Thankfully the achievements work, but if not for them, there’s no reason to play this.

As yet another testament to Valve’s absence of quality control, Chase is something with a price tag that doesn’t deserve one. It’s got the most minimal of features and essentially only a single level that barely changes during its 15 minute run time, in which you dodge endlessly spawning police officers. Touching one docks you 10 HP, and if you take 10 hits, the level restarts. Which level are you on? Your guess is as good as mine, since there’s no way to actually tell. If you stick it out, you’ll end on a black screen telling you that you’ve won, with no other action to take other than to close and uninstall the game.

Lucky me gets to write the first review for Hoverboard Chase.

Hoverboard Chase is a “template flip”, that is to say, it’s a “game” that has been produced by copying a game template from GameMaker Studio, changing a few things, then dumping the barely functional “product” on Steam as a cheap, nasty cash grab. In this case it was a GameMaker Studio template for doing a simple retro pixel arcade “racing” game.

GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and results in terrible games like this one.

OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood

Even better than first one!

OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood is a hard as hell sidescroll arcade skate game, which is probably the best “skate” game you can get on Steam.

I’m a huge fan of the first one aswell, but in my opinion the developers managed to make a great game even better.

Here’s why:

The positive :

  • An outstanding soundtrack.

The first one had a great soundtrack, too and OlliOlli2 doesn’t disappoint in the slightest with it’s choice of music. It’s a mixture of electronica, glitch & and hiphop (artists like CidRim or Kyle Cook) and does just fit so well to game. One of the reasons I like that game so much!

Real player with 19.7 hrs in game

Pros:

  • Great, responsive controls

+Lots of content

+Looks great

+Few glitches (other than some clipping with death animations that are mentioned below)

+Very difficult, yet rewarding enough to keep you going

+Very addictive

  • Has free-play mode for all levels

Cons:

  • $17 might be a little bit much to ask for a 2d side-scrolling game, but value isn’t really a concern if you end up liking the game and pumping hours upon hours into it (like I am likely to do)

  • Death animations are hilarious the first few times but are ultimately on the glitchy side with some clipping, and obvious disregard of physics, although intentional, I would’ve prefered somehting a little less over-the-top

Skater XL - The Ultimate Skateboarding Game

this is probably the most accurate skateboarding simulator I have ever played. I would say what also makes this game stand out is the modding capabilities that allows this game to not feel stale. I have played this since its first release and the progression of the game combined with the mods makes this really fun!

The Ramp

The Ramp

VERY FUN ESPECIALLY FOR SKATERS!!!

The controls took a bit to get used to but very easy and super flow-like once you get the hang of it.

The problems i have is i wish that once you get air you could then grind upon your landing because the orange box in the skate park bowl map just looks way to tempting :)

I do really wish the creator would announce plans for updates like workshop support, new maps, tricks, custom or other characters, and bowl transitions, this would make it feel like less a tool and more of a mini-game sandbox type which it already feels like but all in all the ‘tool’ is worth the money just wish the creator would get serious.

This game does exactly what it says on the tin, and it does it pretty dang well! If you want a game to just relax and unwind to, or you’re looking for a different skateboarding experience, definitely give this a shot. For the price, it feels like a steal! Yes, it only focuses on one kind of skating and I see how that may not appeal to everyone, but what it does, it does really good. The feeling of gaining momentum or just flowing through tricks on the different ramps (there are more than 1) feels incredibly rewarding. Getting the hang of the controls doesn’t take long either. Buy it! Support awesome stuff like this!

VR Skater

VR Skater

VR Skater is a gem, balancing nostalgia with cutting edge technology. Not everyone is or was a skater back in the day, not everyone has played irrecoverable hours in various Tony Hawk console games. A front side nose slide may be indistinguishable from a backside tail slide to you. None of that matters. If none of anything you just read chimes, you can and will still derive huge enjoyment from this game.

This VR experience matches accessibility with challenge. There’s an “easy to pick up hard to master” vibe. Such challenge may not be for everyone in the long-term, but it has me hooked here and now.

An incredible start to Early Access!

TL:DR Pros/Cons list at the bottom of the review.

This review will be subject to change as the product evolves and more content is added, but I wanted to share my initial thoughts on what’s available right now. (Playing with Quest 2 via the official Oculus Link cable)

VRSkater is what I would consider to be the first real VR Skateboarding game on the market. It captures the feeling of being on a board and is a thrilling experience! The trick list isn’t huge at the moment, but it satisfies most of the street skating tricks I enjoy. On top of that the tricks are actually challenging when in motion. Something I immediately loved about this game was the precision required by the player to execute things properly. You’ll definitely want to play through the tutorials to get a feeling for the mechanics.
