Air Forte

Air Forte

It’s a good game for kids with educational value. However, the controls and the stutter in the graphics can make the game very difficult to play. It’s also very short and can be beaten in less than 1 hour. There are more things to do than the main adventure, but the interest levels are low. Achievements are broken.

Edit - Go into the game folder in Steam/Steamapps/Common/Airforte/Data and copy the steamwrapper.dll and rename it to steamwrap2.dll. This will make the achievements work.

Edit - Fixed the stutter in the graphics by installing the new OpenAL to help fix sound issues as well. For some reason this solved the problem. I found the file here. http://www.openal.org/creative-installers/

Pros:

  • Absurdist humour setting

  • Jumpin’ soundtrack

  • It’s educational!

Cons:

  • Solutions are debateable

  • Pretty short game

  • Full controller operation not supported

  • Steam trophy integration partially broken (fixable)

Air Forte is an educational game where you and up to three friends take control of little airplanes and collect floating tokens that match a specific requirement for each mission. The missions are either number missions (e.g. collect tokens showing multiples of 3), word type missions (e.g. collect all the verbs) or flag missions (e.g. collect all the European flags). The main story is framed as a children’s comic-book with crazy jungle characters and a flying ace hippopotamus. Along with the surf-themed music the whole package is quite cute.

Influent

Influent

At the time of writing this review, I’ve mastered all 420 words the game has to offer, and completed all the tasks on the ‘To Do’ list. I played the English version of the game, so that’s the one I’ll be reviewing. I also own the Japanese pack, but I haven’t completed that one yet.

One thing I’d like to start with is that ‘Influent’ never advertises, nor does it claim to make one fluent in any of the languages available here (and I double checked this). The description of the game here on the store page clearly states that it is a game focused on VOCABULARY ACQUISITION and PRONUNCIATION. It never claims to teach one grammar, syntax, conversation, or any other facet of language. I feel like a lot of people thought ‘Influent’ was a full-blown language learning tool, which it is not. The negative reviews here are unnecessary and uncalled for. Having addressed that, let’s move on to the actual content.

Before I begin my review of Influent, let’s all get real about language learning:

Learning a language is difficult. For adult learners, there’s no exception to this, and the how-to of language learning is a skill in itself. Becoming conversational, let alone fluent, in a foreign language takes significant time. Someone otherwise very smart once declared to me that they intended to learn Japanese in a ‘generous’ three days, so that they could read untranslated manga. Suffice to say, it didn’t happen.

From what I saw in the intro video, I thought that it is a pretty simple but straight forward low-poly game; it does exactly what it promises. Then I was really surprised as I saw this was done by one person only! (Pls upvote if you also recognized that).

To the game; seeing that there are already base dialogs, base locations, and aims to provide a real-world experience I can see there is a huge potential for its future. Yes, the dialogs and words are a bit off, but I’m personally ok with that since this is an early access version, and also the game author mentioned it.

This game is really cool for sure, the Czech translations are off sometimes, like the windows in the house are supposed to be “okno” but instead they’re “dobře ne” which kinda means like “not good” I don’t know why, maybe the translation is just missing. many of the interactions to help people don’t work, and some of the conversations are a bit weird, maybe one of the more common languages are better like German or Spanish, but I haven’t started learning German yet, and I won’t be starting for a little while. overall I like it a lot, I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to learn languages, but I would recommend knowing a bit about the language first. I do look forward to seeing the future updates for this game, it really does have potential.

Da! Russian Quiz

Da! Russian Quiz

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I first learned the Cyrillic alphabet using a children’s game app on my phone over the summer. Since then, I have been attempting to learn vocabulary with little success because it’s very laborious. This game teaches you the Cyrillic alphabet, hundreds of key words/phrases that would be sufficient for a tourist to communicate with locals with ease, and a bunch of nouns. If all you want is to be able to be understood by locals at a rudimentary level the way a native Spanish speaker sounds when he comes to the US, then this is the perfect app for you. There is no fuss, no confusing grammar, and no neutered/gendered words that defy common sense. The timed interactive quizzing method has proven to be manner in which I learn languages most easily because it allows me to test my knowledge and confirm retention. Highly recommend!

The game is best used as a resource while learning the Cyrillic alphabet and is handy for those who already speak Russian who wish to learn English words. If you already know both English and Russian this will be like a refresher course. It teaches you numerous words and has an adorable bear. You can set how much time you have for each quiz.

If you can’t speak either language but have a friend who does they can help you out which works great!

When you’re having fun you learn so much easier! :D

WoW! Excellent! Congrarulations for this great idea and work you have done!

Very nice to see the building as (we believe) it was in the Minoan times.

Very good narrations in greek/english that binds us with the history of the plase.

But there is a problem with some door openings that appear lower than the eye-view and is not possible to pass through.

Nice flashcard game/app. Didn’t run into any issues or errors from what I played.

Had stroke order, pronunciation, and a meaning for each character. Obviously this means it’s not overly comprehensive (you can’t practice speaking or writing in app either) but it works.

I felt that while this helped me a little that it was a little over priced.

I do not want to give it a negative review but I wish it had more.

it’s okay for building vocabulary. it’s basically a flashcard game more or less. You should already know how to read korean for this. learning hangul is easy and you can learn it in an hour or two.

you get various categories, and 9 words related to that topic. one example is bathroom, you get 9 things that might be in your bathroom and play basically a flashcard game.

there are 6 major topics, written in korean: food, animals, objects, places, numbers, and concepts.

numbers are exlusively sino-korean numbers, with no native korean numbers.

Nanoscape VR

Nanoscape VR

“If a lion could speak we wouldn’t understand him.” If we could land on the surface of a breast cancer cell we would run screaming even if we are a molecular biology researcher. You have a flashlight, you teleport around, frenetic jiggling proteins dance to the horizon. Also skyscraper size cucumbers shrink into the ground, and pits open up and gobble pink wiggling aliens. Music is tinkling and fits well. You might want to look at this for 3 minutes but nothing to do here for longer. I read the eLife science article “Nanoscape, a data-driven 3D real-time interactive virtual cell environment” and they did an amazing job assembling a vast array of science data about the molecular environment outside a cell surface. Amazing work, but you won’t understand any of it through Nanoscape VR unless you read the article first. Nanoscape VR is worth a brief look. It would benefit greatly from adding some forms user interaction as they admit in the article. I also tried the desktop Nanoscape app which had more detail but less immersion as expected – overall very similar, although the VR is more likely to intrude in my nightmares.

I was getting variable frame rates with an average of about 25 frames per second on my RTX 3080. I can’t recommend any game or app that runs this poorly. Shame because this seemed interesting in theory, plus it’s free.
