Ristar™

I’m an older gamer going back to Atari 2600 and C-64, but I have never really played a lot of Sega games back in the day. My first Sega console in fact was the Dreamcast, and only one of my friends at the time even had a Genesis (Megadrive).
It was an end of life release for the console, so I guess not many have played it until the re-releases. So, this release of Ristar is my first experience with the game. So far I have only played the first few levels (playtime is incorrect) and would recommend this game today if you like platformers. I suggest watching the following video, it has a lot of info on the background of the game as well as a gameplay commentary and demo.

Pandemonium
My review is likely going to be biased - I was too fond of this game fifteen years ago and really too glad to find it here.
That being said, it would still be a very positive review with quite a positive score even if I were stumbling on Pandemonium for the first time.
I’d like to add that I started playing after being scared by other very negative reviews and, as a consequence, I was positively delighted to discover them to be wrong on more than a few points.
Let’s start with the PROs:
- The music. It was the original soundtrack - and you’d better believe I still was able to recognize and hum along more than a piece. I loved it the first time I heard it and I loved it now replaying it on my PC. I’ve had levels playing in the background just to listen to the track.

Another platforming gem from the PS1 era is Pandemonium! (1996 and brought to you by Crystal Dynamics)
We embark on an adventure caused by the mishaps of Fargus the Joker and Nikki, a young sorceress. She singlehandedly caused the destruction of their local town by casting a spell from a tome. They quest to reach something known as the Wishing Engine to restore the town to its previous condition.
We have ourselves a “not quite 3D” deal, here. The gameplay itself is 2D, but you can expect the “typical for its time” 3D rendering. There’s a wide variety of stages to challenge, here. Fortresses, forests, deserts, mystical temples… (Even sawmills?!?!) and each house their own cast of troublesome foes, acrobatics and platforming scenarios. The music has a very unique fusion going on, as composed by Burke Trieschmann, instilling feelings of adventure and mysticism along the way. (Dungeon Tower… great example.). The controls are simple, but don’t harbour forgiveness for you - precision is the name of the game. Fargus and Nikki each have their own special ability for you to use at your leisure throughout the adventure. Fargus provides an offensive spin, whilst Nikki has the perks of double jumping. You also have the joy of selecting whoever you wish for every level.

Beyond Divinity
A good game, not a great game. You’ll read a lot about the bad voice acting (some of it’s alright, really), the difficulty (not just the combat, but staying on track for any particular quest), and how dated it is. The last one is irrelevant, because by definition every game will become dated, so this is an invalid criticism. But yes, the game has plenty of flaws. This was my introduction to the Divinity universe, and although it had its ups and downs, it was an enjoyable ride.
Like I do with every game that feels worth beating, I tried to do everything the game had to offer, including all side quests, explore everything, and genuinely give it my time and attention. This is one of the few RPGs I’ve played all the way through in the last few years for which that approach didn’t really pay off. Sometimes it did, and I discovered a big, ugly and beautiful and visually interesting world. But other times it was exhausting and aimless and felt like a time-sink. The battlefields feature of the game is unusual, and doesn’t add anything worthwhile.

I really wanted to give this game a good review, since I simply adore Larian.
This is a really funny game, and if you love environmental gags and mocking fantasy tropes then this game is going to make you laugh.
However, I really can’t recommend it.
I am currently in Act 2, and I decided to uninstall. This game is a technical nightmare.
Audio glitches are still here from DD, except, instead of being constantly jumpscared by white noise like in DD, you simply lose all SFX for a while. This pretty much forces a save and quit.

Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King
Aladdin on the SEGA Genesis was an especially hot title on release. The soundtrack and visuals are some of the best on the console and the gameplay itself is pretty solid, though certainly not top tier. Fans of the film new to this game will have a blast catching all of the fun and creative little references that tie in with the gameplay systems. Much of the staff behind this game went on to create Earthworm Jim, so if you have played that game at all you already have a general idea of what Aladdin feels like.

_Note: You’re likely to encounter an audio bug in Windows that results in a crash after the first time you run this. To fix it, do one of the following:
1. Go Windows Key - Search “Settings” and open it - Search “Edit the system environment variables” and go to it - Environment Variables (bottom right of window) - Click the bottom “New” for a new System Variable - Enter “SDL_AUDIODRIVER” as Variable Name and “directsound” as the value. Confirm everything by hitting OK three times. Just remember you’ll likely want to remove this setting once you’ve beaten the game._

FINAL FANTASY VIII

I am going on a FF spree and it’s thanks to FF8 here. Honestly very unique and interesting game vs the rest of the series. Though you’re either going to enjoy this game’s quirky and complex Draw/card/GF system or you are going to despise it with your entire existence. I like quirky systems, so I didn’t mind it. In fact, I liked it a lot. Triple Triad was honestly the funnest side-game or mini-game that I’ve played in any game.
I found it to be a fun experience, despite its flaws. If magic and GF cut scenes were faster/skipable, I think this game would be ten times better lol.

Gothic II: Gold Edition
The Gothic series and Gothic 2 (w/ addon) has a cult following in both Germany as well as Eastern Europe. Developed by a tiny indie studio it featured absolutely fantastic storytelling in a fantasy world without any of the usual high fantasy bullcrap. The entire Gothic series is low Fantasy, similar to the Witcher series, but not as grim. What makes Gothic 2 really shine, isn’t grittyness, but roughness. It is an unique RPG in the way that there is a difference between knocking someone out and actually killing them, meaning that bashing in a few heads is a viable strategy for many quests, without actually having to become a mass murderer. This allows for very intricate quest design and many memorable moments. It also spoils the inner child in me when I once again have the ability to verbally announce that the player character is going to plant his fist into the face of someone and most of the time, for good reason.

With most of the games what you see is what you get. But this isn’t the case. Gothic is a great game but Gothic 2 takes it on a whole new level. The amount of content, creativity and how much work the devs put into it is amazing. Another reminder that quality world building is important in games. Majority of devs don’t realize that having shit world design is a gamebreaker, so they just copy and paste same locations in a huge but empy world, make quests with obvious outcomes and no variety and dumb everything down. With this game though the bar was set so high that the devs from PB never managed to get close again. And likely they never will after Risen\Elex.

Grand Theft Auto 2
This GTA is different due to the camera angle, it has more of a 2D feel to it. However the idea is the same, open world game where you steal cars, kill people and explore. The cities are like levels, you beat a city and then go to the next one. There are 3 of them and each city has 3 gangs. The thing is, you can’t travel from one city to another. Instead you gotta choose them from the menu. The way you beat them is a little different too. Instead of completing specific missions, or a number of missions, in this one you gotta reach a specific amount of money. The money system is a little bit different in this game as you get money from kills and vehicles destroyed. Missions will give you money too. So you got 2 options : Either join a gang and complete missions for them or destroy everything until you reach the amount of money needed. Be careful with gangs, respect is everything! The more you kill other gang members the more likely you will get attacked when you enter their area (kinda similar to San Andreas).

Indiana Jones® and the Emperor’s Tomb™
As a child, one of my favourite passtimes was playing this game’s levels over and over, just pummeling nazis for hours on end. The combat system is that good. When I discovered that this gem was on steam last year, I picked it up without a second thought.
As it turns out, 21 year old me still loves to play levels over and over to kill nazis with my bare hands. When I am bored and have nothing else to do, I know I can’t go wrong with some IJET.
This game’s amazingly fun. That’s the word I’d use to describe it, everything about it is just so much fun. The camera’s a little clunky, and it uses a Dark Souls-esque control scheme by default (which I don’t have a problem with, myself, but plenty of people do), but the platforming’s fun and intuitive and the puzzles are interesting enough.

This is one of the best adventure games I have ever played, and I am not just saying that for the Indiana Jones Franchise, but for any PC game in general. I would say this game is of the same genre as the Prince of Persia series, except that Prince of Persia is based on ancient times and does not involve guns, firefights or aircraft.
There is a lot of action in this game involving fistfights, firefights, etc. There is more fistfight than shooting and that just makes the game all the more interesting, in my opinion. Plus you need to get very good at making Indy jump, use his whip, and do both at the same time. There are several puzzles to solve and you need to take Indy to some locations on your own. There is no real map guiding you. You need to use your head for this, or you will not get anywhere. It is precisely in this respect that this game’s experience is a lot like that of the Prince of Persia series. That is exactly what I love about it.

Jet Set Radio
Have you ever wanted to be a rollar-blading punk, rollin' around the city tagging walls, and stickin' it to the man?
No? Maaaan fuck you get out of here yes you have. This game is known far across the land for it’s kickin' soundtrack, beats so thick you could bounce a coin off ‘em. Also, it’s so old GBA could run it, so don’t sweat the specs. Only worry is the keyboard controls suck harder than your EX girlfriend, so grab an Xbox 360 controller and get going.
Now the objective of the game is simple, roll around the city, tag some walls, and keep away from the fuzz. However, this is all done to the sweet sonic sound that will be oozing out of the audio device of your choosing. It also helps that this game has graphically dated better than you could ever dream of. (Oh snap son.) You might get one Jet rank on your first playthrough. Might. If you wanna get Jet on every mission you must first study the anicent urban staking gurus.

“Who are you! What’s your name? Super Brothers!”
Jet Set Radio is one of those games you most likely saw a demo of at a Target or Best Buy back in the early 2000s but never really got to play because you were too cool for a Dreamcast. Luckily, this PC port exists. This game is the perfect mix of skating and graffiti with a soundtrack to match and graphics that are considerably better than those of today’s games. The added danger of being tackled by street guards, being shot at by a crazed police captain, having missiles fired from helicopters, and run over by motorcycle riding police makes it more fun
