Neo ATLAS 1469

Neo ATLAS 1469

I played the Uncharted Waters games on the SNES back in the 90s, as well as several other Age of Exploration themed titles on the PC (Galleons of Glory, Voyages of Discovery), so I was happy to see the genre revisted with Neo Atlas 1469. I found the spirit of the game to be in keeping with my memories of those old school titles, but the game play mechanics of Neo Atlas 1469 were an ungodly irritation that buried my nostalgia at sea. So, I am going to recommend the game for those who can remember the era I am referring to and also remember what it was like running games in DOS, and warn everyone else away by describing how incredibly frustrating the interface of this game is for a modern title that could have been so much better …

Neo Atlas 1469 was recently reviewed in a German magazine and its mix of exploration and visual novel reminded me of 80 Days which I enjoyed a lot. So I got it on the Steam Golden Week sale. I’ve read later that it’s a port of a Vita remake of a Playstation game from 1999. As reviews of it are mixed, I immediately started it to possibly refund it if it was really terrible. While not everything was gold, it was fun and unique enough to play through it.

There are three major elements in this game. First, fleets led by various admirals can be send out to explore unknown territory or investigate discovered places that bear mysteries. Second, trade routes can be established to guarantee the monetary means to pay your admirals and repair or extend your fleets. Third, discovered areas have to be searched in detail to find hidden items, locations or knowledge.

Fast paced and hectic, you need to give the customers their requested items, while looking out for a few badguys. Muggers come in and attempt to rob you – kill them quick! Thieves request an item, but then try to get away without paying for it – club them before they escape! The wanted person will act like a normal customer, buying and paying for an item, but if you knock them out instead of filling their request, you get a bonus.

There are plenty of items that they’ll request, and at least three qualities of each (standard, gilded, and enchanted) – so you’ll need to be on top of your game to ensure everyone gets what they wanted.

Majesty 2

Majesty 2

Ive owned this game 6 years, and having just finished another play-through i thought it time to write a review :p

I return to this game often. it is one of the best RTS ever imo. The twist of only being able to indirectly influence your “units” (via a flag system of rewards that you have to pay for) makes it refreshing and stand out from the pack. Replayability is immense due to the randomise set-up option. Your units are heros (individual archers, warriors, mages, healers etc) that level and gear up as you progress through any given mission. You can also carry over up to 3 of them to subsequent missions. Once you research the prerequisite you can organise them into parties of up to 4 individuals (i use classic tank/healer/2xdps). The game looks beautiful, plays smooth and bug-free, and never fails to satisfy. The voice acting is extemely well acted and the lines well-written and amusing.

This game is quite simply an insult to fans who loved the original majesty (including me), i loved majesty 1 when my parents got it in the Winter of 2003 (oh so many years ago), it was one of those games that was one of the memories of my childhood. But enough of that, lets get to why this game is atrocious compared to the original Majesty.

Paradoks decided apprantly that instead of developing this game themselves, they outsourced it to 1C, a company in Moscow that i guess have no idea what made the original so good. So what did 1C, (and Paradoks) screw up that made this game inferior to Majesty 1? the list is too long, but i will list the 3 biggest problems with majesty 2 with a paragraph for the first two problems, and a short summary for the third.

Majesty Gold HD

Majesty Gold HD

Majesty is a beloved childhood game of mine. Which I originally received as the pack in during Kellog’s Nutrigrain’s video game pack around 2001 or 2002.

The game is a hybird RTS / Godsim originally released in 2000 with it’s main innovation being the independent charather AI.

The player can directly control the construction of buildings, as normal for the genre, but all of the “heros” move on their own and cannot be given orders. Instead, they all have behaviour patterns based on their class, which lets them simulate a personality. Warriors like to hunt monsters, Rangers like to explore, and Monks like to act as hotel inspectors, wandering from inn to inn.

Majesty Gold HD is an unusual game with an unusual history.

While it’s billed as a Fantasy Kingdom Sim, Majesty has most of the trappings of a conventional RTS. However, it does stray from RTS convention in one major aspect and that was enough for its developer, Cyberlore Studios, to have considerable difficulty finding a publisher even during the great RTS glut of the 90s.

To fully appreciate Majesty, you need to talk about RTSes in general. Now, the term Real-Time Strategy itself is a little generic – Crusader Kings II, for instance, is real-time and it is a strategy game but no one would confuse it for an RTS. When gamers use the term, they’re referring to very specific types of games – games like Blizzard’s Warcraft II and Westwood’s Command & Conquer, the two titles released in 1995 that inspired the RTS glut.

Written review below!

These two may not be full-on remasters, but an enhanced port available on modern platforms is more than we have already.

Gameplay

While I may have been familiar with this series, this would be my first crack at it. And I gotta say, I went in expecting something like Digimon or Pokémon (two games this franchise gets compared to A LOT), but got something completely different. It’s much less a full-on adventure RPG and more so a life simulator RPG.

One of the best PS1 games is back after many years.

Monster Rancher is a great series and the 2nd game is probably its most solid entry. Released originally in 1999, the game stands strong and provides a good monster rising experience that was surprising for the time and one that you still don’t see this well executed nowdays. It has a lot of depth that, hopefully, may meet its full potential with the online features that have been introduced.

This port needs some work, but in no way it gets in the way to enjoy those two games. Also, Monster Rancher 2 has an added “fast-forward” option that really saves up a lot of time and allow you to rise quickly your monsters. The introduction of the “database search” is also a nice way to make the disc stone concept work today and allows everyone to get all the monsters that we couldn’t back in the PS1 era.

Spirited Heart Deluxe

Spirited Heart Deluxe

Based on the poor reviews, I was expecting Spirited Heart: Deluxe to be utterly unplayable. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, though not without several problems, it’s not nearly that bad. While not the best raising sim I’ve ever played, it’s certainly not the worst, and it even does some interesting things with the format. I’d say its biggest flaw is that it’s very old, and thus, obviously the work of a young developer. It lacks polish, but it’s got some heart.

♥ Sorta neat

I liked the premise - I’m a sucker for simulation games, especially ones filled with choices.

Unlike other games, there’s many characters to pursue a relationship with, and along with being able to choose your character species, you can also choose whether to be straight or lesbian. Nice! -:)

Then there’s stats - essentially character traits like gardening, charisma, etc. that effect the jobs you can have, and the choices/outcomes to things. Unfortunately what I quickly realized was the game isn’t about a story or choice - it’s about the stats.

Gladiator Guild Manager: Prologue

I hope developers read russian comments, some of our community made some good ideas to realize.

So i have some too.

To start with some classes need better balance,

best classes is ORC (axe-man), ARCHER, HEALER and maybe DWARF (gun man)

and worst classes is FROST MAGE, NECROMANCER, BUFF MAGE and SWORDS MAN

ORC is really OP he got a lot of dmg and stun

SWORDS MAN got weak dmg and low resistance (block), ORC tanking better than tank class lol

HEALER got heal and shield, with ORC its gg ez

ARCHER just good dmg dealer, but she has some problem stayin close combat, she is way faster than all other chars but when they come close to her she cant hit n run any more and she startin close combat thats strange

I downloaded this on a whim because it was free, and was thoroughly impressed.

GGP:M is essentially a demo for their full game. It’s delightfully polished, and has a wonderful balance between fun and challenge. You can easily walk through the game on easy, normal will slow you down a bit. Trying for the “hard mode + permadeath” achievement definitely takes familiarity with various units' strengths and weaknesses.

Like other auto-combat games, you balance resource spend (gold for units and items, other misc. resources for buildings) and select a team for each particular fight. An underleveled team, properly constructed, can defeat considerably stronger opponents. A blindspot to your units' weaknesses will definitely leave you with holes in your roster. There is some strategy regarding unit placement, but it’s mostly common sense, i.e. tanks up front and ranged softies in the back. I do like that for each stage in an arena, there are 3 different options to choose from, each with a different mix of enemy units and number cap for units you can place. I will say that sometimes these are a bit out of whack, and a green fight (easy) can be more difficult than the purple (hard) depending on enemy team composition.

Meadowland

Meadowland

I do believe Meadowland was Marten Jonsson’s (Star Sky, Star Sky2, But to Paint the Universe) first Steam game. As a walking simulator (though the player flies) the ambition I feel was to tell a simple visual story with the added elements of a puzzle game. As a puzzle game the visual clues found in the book are a bit difficult to understand but the story is “age-old” of when a boy and a girl meet and fall in love.

Biggest review complaint is about an achievement called “Tree of Dreams”. To gain this achievement the player must fly back and forth across the whole landscape (day and night) looking for semi-translucent puzzle pieces, a type of mini-game. A bit tedious but doable. No offense intended to Mr. Jonsson but I am glad he steered away from actual puzzle elements in his later games. His later endeavors are still beautiful art pieces but focus more on the tale being told then gimmicky puzzles. (Since I own all of this developer’s work I do feel I have a little right to comment on an artist’s growth in a difficult medium.)

TLDR: This thing ticked me right off

Review: The concept for this title works great. Relaxing pastoral landscape, fairy gliding in the winds, starry sky shows up after a very bright sun goes down. Little glowing flowers scattered around, little black critters float up off the ground, which you can then chase and make musical notes. You explore gracefully and unlock parts of a scripted narrative as you go along, with a nice grimoire at the beginning giving you chapter names and one picture for each as a hint system and progression bar. Lovely!

Royal Wedding Quest!

Royal Wedding Quest!

Royal wedding Quest! is a fantasy otome game where your character goes on a quest to find a husband and claim the throne of her country.

Your character, the current queen’s daughter, has to follow traditions; When the Queen is ready to pass down the power, all the single noble young ladies in the country are sent out on a quest. Taking along a representative of each of the four guilds, a mage, a healer, a warrior and a rogue, they have to go on an adventure to find noble young men to marry. The big quest is full of dangers as they compete to become the new queen.

While on her quest your character will have to deal with bandits, rivals, but also self-doubt and a sudden need to grow up and become an adult. You follow her as she discovers the world and does her best to find what makes her happy- and perhaps fall in love on the way. Her fate is in your hands.

The game has some fairly unique features:

  • There is no “True ending”; while some endings are more complete your main goal is to achieve your character’s happiness.

  • Your character is defined early on in the game and will influence your chances at a romance with some love interests, unlock or lock certain choices and change your reactions to some situations.

  • You have two potential rivals, both with their own story arc you will get involved in.

  • You may now customise your character’s appearance as well; there’s 48 possible different looks for the MC.

  • There’s a total of 7 love interests, including one lady and one leading you down an alternative lifestyle path if you’re not into vanilla stuff.

  • The game is still in developpment so more features may appear, and some content in the demo might be subject to change.
