Singled Out

Singled Out

This game is the perfect arcade game. I haven’t gotten to a boss so I can’t comment about that. It’s also really easy to get onto the leader board. There’s not much to the game but I think that’s how most arcade games are. For it being made in a game jam its great! I didn’t even realize it was made for a game jam at first. It want more games like this! It doesn’t require to much thought so its easy to watch a movie and play it at the same time.

This is a simple and fun little game with a distinctive pixel art style, that’s best enjoyed with a few friends, especially if you’re all a little drunk. You’re given three clues as to what the target galactic super-criminal looks like, and a crowd of faces milling around. You need to identify the criminal and shoot them to get points and move to the next round. If you shoot an innocent bystander by mistake then it’s game over, and you start again from the first round.

It starts out simple, with the target criminal usually being easily spotted at a glance, but quickly starts to build up in difficulty as the faces in the crowd all start to share similar looking features that forces you to start to check and double-check and even triple-check before you pull the trigger. The ten second time limit for each round is accompanied by the ticking of the clock which only adds to the pressure. Taking turns playing it with friends and trying to talk them into shooting the wrong target so they don’t beat your score is almost the best part.

Ghost Grab 3000

Ghost Grab 3000

Ghost Grab is a great arcade title, about catching and popping ghosts after the apocalypse. What starts with a simple grab and dodge mechanic quickly becomes a fast paced, bullet dodge game, where the players must use emps, nukes and dashes to wrangle a horde of spirits. Really fun, quick game. Much more forgiving than Switch N Shoot for beginners, too.

Game Review from 30 Minutes of Play

Reminding myself if I should revisit and if you should purchase.

ELEVATOR PITCH: Bullethell Megaman

LIKED: Easy to learn, hard to master gameplay. Love the pixel art and chip-tune throwback.

DISLIKED: Starting levels can get tedious causing some early mistakes in what would be perfect play.

Space Toads Mayhem

Great nostalgic feeling.

I’ve been following this game for a while and it hasn’t disappointed me, plays well and can be quite challenging. Reminds me very much of the old arcade systems.

Real player with 1.6 hrs in game

Haven’t played an arcade space shooter since Windows95, and although Space Toads Mayhem is a fun game, it’s also insanely challenging.

The HUD design could do with some colour variation, like green to red on the dials etc, and effects for damage dealt and taken are not distinctive enough to tell them apart even when things are not chaotic.

Besides the UI and effects the AI are great, they provide a unique challenge for each playthrough; mixing it up with fast paced lunges timed randomly while the slow ones dog-pile you probably being the most frustrating of their attacks.

Falling Plus

Falling Plus

If you like to play classic arcade games, Falling+ has a look and feel inspired by arcade classics, a mix reminiscent of Pengo (penguins and smashing blocks) and Warios Woods. Although I name check these other games, the game feels original. While it starts easy, it gets more difficult as the stages progress and new colors and evil walruses are added as bricks fall faster.

Lots of subtle extras for your two bucks (Disclaimer: I recieved for free) beyond just the main game, plenty of support for various controllers and extra game modes. Definitley give it a try and support indie studios.

Cute retro style arcade game that surprisingly has more depth than what it seems like initially. Basically, you’re breaking pairs of blocks together or sending a block into my mortal enemy Mr. Walrus - but you can also forego the points and just kick the blocks out of existence. More blocks fall in waves, and you need to not get squished and clear the level of all blocks. It can get addicting. Be sure to check out the Extras menu to see the game simulated as if it was an actual arcade (complete with ROM boot up) and other challenge modes.

Full Disclosure: I LOVE TO FLY!!! (As a gamer, I mean.)

As such, I have a substantial number of Steam-based games that allow me to indulge this joyous affliction, the most recent being the wonderfully designed and remarkably addictive and entertaining Risky Wings (previously UBERFLIGHT.) Admittedly, flying games basically do one thing, and the measures of such games are:

Savant - Ascent

Savant - Ascent

Savant - Ascent is a pretty short, absolutely gorgeous, and entirely unique game. It’s fast, fun, simple enough to pick up in minutes, and deep enough to warrant long discussions and in-depth guides, and still leave room for new discoveries. The first release from D-Pad Studio (to my knowledge), made in collaboration with the titular musical artist, Savant (Aleksander Vinter), this is definitely a good example of how to make a game the right way.

Story mode is pretty short, consisting of only 5 levels that each take 2-5 minutes (except perhaps the final boss), and the gameplay itself is very simple, consisting of attacking enemies and moving between 2 platforms (and sometimes not even the latter). However, the game really shines through in its ability to stretch everything it offers to the limit. Story mode done? Try to race yourself, your friends, and the rest of the world with time attack, or go for an all-time highscore in endless mode. Maybe [SPOILERS] don the mask of the vanquished Vario and replay story mode with different attacks and movement for a change-up. During play, collect CD pieces from special enemies to unlock bonus soundtracks and new abilities, working your way up to obtaining the ultimate power that is the whole reason you’re at the tower. Then try to take on the final boss, a lighting-fast, teleporting robot samurai in space with laser-shark friends who want nothing more than to see you reduced to a pile of ashes with a silly hat. And when all of that’s done, maybe think about unlocking all of the achievements in the game. There aren’t a lot of them, but when you accomplish them for the first time, they are certainly deserving of the name; the devs intentionally made them difficult to accomplish so it would actually be worth getting them and not just some extra stuff they threw in on a lazy Friday.

Real player with 78.0 hrs in game

Right from the start, you feel like you are controlling an awesome, destructive power. The energy blasts are wild and the animation conveys a real sense of force. As you unlock power-ups, that destructive power increases dramatically. Once you are fully powered, you will tear through the first portion of the game with little effort. Fortunately, an expansion was released to bring back some challenge and you can start from any level that you’ve unlocked.

Controls are simple. Aim the curser in the general direction of enemies and fire. The hero is also able to deftly avoid incoming threats by jumping in place, jumping between two platforms, or rolling between the platforms. If an enemy drops a portion of a CD, highlight it and alt fire to rope it in. This is how to unlock power-ups and new music tracks. The power-ups add some more variety to your arsenal and they are straightforward to learn.

Super Multitasking

Super Multitasking

I played the original on XBLA and this version at conventions. It’s such a simple idea, I wish I had thought of it.

Think Wario Ware meets Alt+Tab, but where the minigames all feel like good ol Atari 2600 games. Very simple one button (or one control) games, but then you have to play two of them at once. Then three. Then four. Then you’re asked a math problem for absolutely no good reason.

Not content with just the arcade game, there are also challenges that have set criteria, as well as a robust practice mode that can help hone your skills for when you go on Twitch and want to show off how awesome you are at multitasking, only to then fail in the first 30 seconds and get all exasperated on camera, and then chat will make fun of you. Point out to chat that they’re not actually watching you, they’re really reading up on something else in another tab.

Real player with 3.1 hrs in game

Super Multitasking takes the “micro” game concept and puts a brilliant twist on it, offering up multiple games all at the same time. What looks very easy becomes very hard as your brain is challenged to do multiple things all at once. Pressing the button in rhythm for tennis balls while you dodge spikes with the controller when– SUDDENLY MATH. It’s harder than it looks, but a whole lot of fun. The short average game length allows you to play in small bursts if that’s more your thing, and the game is rich with features such as built-in challenges, very deep customization, and the ability to play on keyboard or controller (the experience is different- try both). I definitley reccomend, and congratulate yyrGames on the release.

Before you buy, a little warning - this game was made in a self-imposed challenge to create a commercially viable game in only 30 days.

…Which didn’t quite work out! Turns out: 30 days is actually a really short amount of time to create a game that’s not only commercially viable, but also fun!

The goal was still to make a fun game in the end, with polished gameplay, but - you know - still expect some jank and not a TON of playtime!

Eversleep? More like Nosleepforthedeveloper, am I right, hahaha (help).

But what is Eversleep?

Now that’s a good question! Eversleep: Lunistice Gaiden is a 3D Platformer created with simple but fun gameplay and a cute PS1/SEGA Saturn inspired artstyle in mind. Take the role of Hana the Tanuki and jump and fight through her dreams! What secrets await her on the moon - her final destination?

Eversleep features a retro look heavily inspired by early 90s 3D graphics with bouncy enemies and a fluffy heroine.

Together we had this idea to provide as much data about the game’s development and release as possible: to support upcoming game developers and give interested players an insight about the development and marketing process. That means we are releasing sales numbers, discount strategies and valuable development and marketing info via Twitter and Medium. If you would like to support this approach and experiment, feel free to buy the game. And if you dislike it, feel free to make use of the refund system Steam offers.
