Simple. Delightful. A different reviewer caused me to buy this, and he or she was right. Training visual memory for a tiny price? Yes, please.

Bunny’s Maze

An interesting game, with simple gameplay that sometimes complicates, but requires little effort to find a solution.

With 3 different environments and each one with mechanics, this ends up breaking the monotony.

Low price with a few hours of fun, I like that!

The levels are poorly designed. The game is based around switches that alternate blocks. And the problem is that a lot of switch press sequences are forced. That is, you either have acces to only one next switch, or the other switches are very obviously pointless at current step. So most of the levels you spend more time holding down arrow keys than thinking.

Some of the levels (especially in ice world) are broken - you can ignore some of the switches and parts of the level.

There is no restart button too. But you’ll rarely need it.

While Starbreeze has enjoyed acclaim from it’s previous releases, the studio hasn’t exactly built it’s reputation on creating whimsical worlds with moving narratives. Both Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness gave their players dark and gritty worlds to explore and some unique gameplay twists to hook players. With such a pedigree Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons stands out as being wholly against type. It’s the video game equivalent of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, stepping away from subject matter reserved for mature audiences to deliver a memorable experience that can be enjoyed by audiences both young and old. While seemingly stepping out of the comfort zone established by their track record, Brothers stands out as one of 2013’s best, and most surprising, releases.

Shadow Puppeteer

Shadow Puppeteer

A Small Hidden Gem

Shadow Puppeteer is designed around co-op and dosn’t just throw a second player on the screen. That’s a big plus considering that few games follow the same philosophy. You can play it single player though controlling the two characters Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons style (with the sticks, showder and trigers buttons). I can see many people complaining that the game is too hard playing solo. Sure, it takes a while for your brain to adjust to the multi tasking but I found it a nice and fun way to emulate the main challenge of the game which is the two players to be in sync and consideration for each other. As a whole I found it an easy game (whit the exeption of the bose fights) making it ideal to play with a significant other/family member who is not that much into games. For inexperienced players I would recommend the shadow character as the camera position sometimes makes it hard to correctly judge the distance in depth for the boy character.

Although it has some very interesting ideas and a cute aesthetic, it was simply too buggy for me. My laptop usually runs modern games at 60fps and yet this game ran poorly, to say the least. I got 5 fps at times, which made it almost unbeatable, specially playing solo. The camera angles are so bad implemented that I just kept falling everywhere. Sometimes, there’s a small delay after pressing a key and the action taking place, which basically results in the little dude suddenly deciding to commit suicide instead of jumping over a small gap… and also in the player raging uncontrollably as the screen fades to black.

Before I begin the review proper, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge what a complete f*cking idiot I am.

When I first played this I went through it entirely using mouse and keyboard, despite the fact I was frequently grumbling about how heart-breaking the controls were and the slight but still awkward disconnect between button press and character. But I still persevered because, well… sure, I do have a control pad, but since the mouse and keyboard were already hooked up and I was already in my pyjamas, I was hardly going to lean over a couple feet to my right to grab and connect a controller now, was I? But before writing this review I decided to give it a shot just to be sure, and damn, am I a complete f*cking idiot. It was a revelation. The difference might be small but the impact is massive, and that tightening of movement and control pretty much eradicated the major complaint I had about the gameplay. So I’ve learned my lesson, control pad for 3rd-person games from now on. Though, whichever control method you use, you should still find a lot to love about this game.

Take a moment here to remember your childhood. Remember how afternoons after school could be filled with fantastical worlds brought forth from the trees, the rocks, the tall grasses in the backyard or the field near your neighborhood: all you needed was your imagination. Remember as you went to sleep at night and stared at the shadows in your room, sometimes in wonder, and sometimes in fear of the shapes they made. Remember how life could be magical in the most ordinary of things and how, as you grew older, you longed for the days when reality didn’t have to be so damned real all the time: homework, bills, politics, relationships, family…

Hanoi Puzzles: Flip Match

Hanoi Puzzles: Flip Match

A simple change in the game mechanic gives the puzzles a new way to solve. I am just as happy with this game as the previous version.

Some puzzles are straight forward early on to learn some basic concepts of moving and solving. Then later the solutions are not as obvious and you get to plan out your moves. But if you dont want to solve for the minimum moves, you can just move as much as you want. Being able to move to the next level with the “correct” solution, is huge for me.

The music is still calm and fits the style. Some of the music is a little bit… stronger or more aggressive compared to the previous game, but still calm and in the background.

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

This review is relevant to all the Trine games(so far) in regard to themselves, and how they fit into the whole Trine series. I’ll try to be as thorough and clear as I can. I’m also one of those players that cares about the story just as much as the game play, so I’ll also be mentioning that. Bear with me, please. (One thing they all have in common: the artwork and music is out of this world)

Trine 1

I liked Trine 1 because of the gravity of the story and because of it’s relatively good game play and good puzzles. Story wise, it was dark and rather heavy, but for a game like Trine it was good since it kept me focused and in anticipation of the happy ending, which was all the more satisfying. The story wasn’t very involved though (meaning you travel to one place, get a clue, then basically go to the next place while fighting monsters), so that was pretty much the only thing I wish they’d done better. Still, to me, it felt a lot more as if I was in there with the characters, on my way to defeat the forces of darkness.

achievements are short and sweet: finish this, collect that - nothing terrible or hard

why it is so bad?

check the rating of other Trine games. they usually get universal acclaim or overly positive reception. their Steam ratings are varies in 85-95%% rank, which is insanely good. however Trine 3 lacks this and its rating in 60-70%%. why so? what did contribute towards such negative review? ohh, the right answer, as always, lies in monetary direction…

The Pilgrim

The Pilgrim

A very cool, short, find the object puzzle game. Love the graphics and the mood music. The only complaint I have is that occasionally the camera angle makes it difficult to see what I need to see. Otherwise, this game is fun and somewhat challenging. I’d love to play a longer version of this. Works on Linux with Steam Play / Proton. Yay!

It looks nice but there’s nothing really to it. Though the fixed camera positions made it more difficult than it needed to be, this was enjoyable as a student work demonstration. Playing it on Steam is like stopping off for ten minutes in a busy final year exhibition.

1979 Revolution: Black Friday

1979 Revolution: Black Friday

Certainly one of the more unique and surprising games I’ve played. The concept had peaked my interest, as I’m a film-maker and interested in politics myself, and also interested in world history. I believe you cannot truly make an informed choice, until you understand the context behind what you believe, and the bigger picture. I’m well aware of Iran’s history in the 20th century, from the CIA/British coup against Mossadeq, to the current day Islamic republic. When I’m told by the media that ‘Iran is evil’, my first thought is ‘why?’. It seems in today’s world, we’re expected to hate on command, rather than to think critically and dig deeper. With that in mind, I was keen to see how the events were depicted in this game.

Real player with 6.5 hrs in game

It is quite difficult to fairly judge a piece of work when its qualities and failures are exceptionally conflicting. 1979 Revolution: Black Friday proposes a fresh and intimate look at a very critical moment in history, mostly unexplored in today’s media, and becomes a very important creation deployed over a rich, unique background. However, it completely fails as a game on so many basic levels that it renders the experience partially unpalatable.

Weakless

Weakless

Weakless – Finding Strength in Collaboration

Weakless is a short and relaxing puzzle-adventure game set in a beautiful organic environment. The player adopts the role of two carefree, wooden creatures called Weavelings, one of which is deaf, the other blind. However, the characters find strengths in their weaknesses and collaboration is the key to solving unique puzzles and saving their world.

Overall, it is a serene and relaxing experience with a disappointingly vague narrative and fairly minimal mechanics. Its visuals and soundtrack are the game’s best features with the style of gameplay allowing the player to enjoy these at a leisurely pace. The cute characters and simple puzzles give the game a very casual feel, making it easy to play but unfortunately, much harder to get immersed in. Weakless was an enjoyable experience overall but the short playtime of around 3-5 hours and technical issues mean that the price tag is a bit too steep. With that in mind, I’d only recommend it cautiously, and definitely on sale.

First Impressions🤔

The game looks impressive and feels original from the start. Hand drawn graphics play a significant part in telling the story and there is an unusual soundtrack playing throughout which gives the game an earthy and natural feel. Instruments such as the marimba, rav drums and udu are used to create the weird but spiritual acoustics.
