Ground Zero Texas - Nuclear Edition

Ground Zero Texas - Nuclear Edition

I’d already seen the work and vast improvements in picture quality with Screaming Villain’s re-releases of Night Trap and Double Switch, so I was itching to get my hands on Ground Zero Texas! As a fan of this on SegaCD back in the 90’s, it is super fun to re-visit this again and see this game in all its glory, as it was probably intended (and not 64 colours at 12fps). The video and audio is as good as it’s ever going to get, and it feels like the original game thanks to the painstaking programming by Tyler and Screaming Villains.

XF5700 Mantis Experimental Fighter

XF5700 Mantis Experimental Fighter

Earth had no warning.

Out of nowhere, an army of insect-like creatures from a distant world, using technologically advanced space weapons, ambushed and devastated Earth. Perhaps more horrendous than the nearly three billion deaths was the portion of the remaining population that was used as host bodies for gestating alien offspring. The Fist of Earth world government was formed to defend humanity and repel the looming alien threat.

You’re a member of FOE’s elite fighter corps – a recruit fresh from the Academy. You’ve studied diligently, spent countless hours in simulations, and prepared yourself in every way possible for battle. But, until recently, the alien technology and firepower were far superior to Earth’s.

Now, you’ve been assigned to the XF5700 Experimental Fighter (codename: Mantis). The fate of the world rests in your hands.

  • Complete edition: Includes the Rexum missions, voiced audio, and cinematics added for the expanded version of the game.

  • High-tech fighter: Sporting a shock-proof electro-luminescent HUD, Quad-Jump drives, and a sophisticated navigational system, the Mantis is the weapon Earth desperately needs.

  • Epic sci-fi story: CGI and full-motion videos (in all their early-90s glory) present a sweeping space drama in a vibrant futuristic setting as you progress through the game’s missions.

  • Awesome firepower: the Mantis comes heavily armed with Mass Driver cannons and an impressive array of missiles.

  • Realistic ship physics: Ship flight and movement are modeled on Newtonian physics models that give the game a distinct sense of motion.

  • Fearsome enemies: The Sirian insect race can form a powerful collective group mind capable of obliterating the human race. Only you can stop them.

Mystic Midway: Rest in Pieces

Mystic Midway: Rest in Pieces

First of all I’ve played a lot more than 2 hours.. I owned Mystic Midway back when it was on the Phillips CD-I and honestly I can tell you that its one of the best shooting galleries there is.. between levels Doctor Derth taunts you and you’ll find yourself coming back from time to time to challenge the Mystic Midway over again! Basically, it’s a lot of fun!

Brings back memories of the old Phillips CDi and this is a great time waster which actually plays better on PC because of the mouse controls. Be aware that the trailer footage is taken from the CDi and this MS Dos version is considerably more pixelated as you’d probably expect. Glad to see Pixel Games UK releasing some of these old school retro gems at a decent price. #ItsShowtime

Hijacker Jack : ARCADE FMV

Hijacker Jack : ARCADE FMV

An interesting take on the FMV genre, instead of point n' click type FMV games. (it is still)

It is a pretty decent enough game, but could be better.

Edit : They’ve lowered the price, so in this state, I recommend it.

(This is not a VR game, whoever did tagged that is a dummy.)

My analysis (serious one) :

Controls are confusing, I prefer this control scheme on mobile, but not here.

Pretty impressive for such a low budget project. (atleast better than Stay Dead lol)

But a small nitpick when it comes to the fighting system, the combat system is fine if its actually video game graphics but no, this is a film. The thing is, to progress in the fight scene (I’m talking about the guy in Jasmine’s house), you have to do a specific action, which makes the fight frustrating (especially if you have no hints enabled) because it’s repeating the same thing if you fail to do that specific action.

I can absolutely recommend this game, a couple of hours of fun for 5 EUR. I played with the Android version earlier, but it’s a much better experience on PC. (improved video quality and controls)

The gameplay is smooth and the action scenes are amazing :)

Realms of the Haunting

Realms of the Haunting

Wow! What an amazing game! I’ve never played it before or back in the day so this was a first impression. It’s such a huge 20 chapter adventure of FPS, scares, puzzles, cutscene movies and story, that you get so engaged in it, it really feels like you are controlling a character in a movie.

The graphics are impressive for the time, the mapping especially is so well thought out and designed that I was always amazed whenever I arrived at a new location. It’s not all hallways and darkness, there’s such a variety of fantasy like locations that it never gets dull.

This game took me about 20 hours, I wouldn’t say it necessarily earns all of that length. You should know before you get into this that this is not really a horror game, it’s an adventure game where the first half has heavier horror elements than the second, which leans more into the surreal cosmic world that it builds up.

Most people’s gripe is with the controls, but honestly it only took me a little bit to adjust to the antiquated first-person movement, although you SHOULD absolutely read the manual before playing to get an idea of how to play.

I enjoy the settings and parkour aspect of the game. The negative reviews in my opinion are pretty harsh, it is a free game after all. The game ran fine on my setup. The controls need some work but overall a good game.

Wild West Z

Even though this game is released in early access, it is far from complete and not made with common user experiences in mind. Here’s some reasons of why you shouldn’t buy this game at this point:

POOR UI

-There’s no key re-binding. The only mention of controls is through dialogue at the very beginning and the main menu tells you nothing.

-During character dialogue, pressing tab or control allows you to edit their text lines, and you can’t back out of this “debug” mode unless you restart the game save.

Okay, look at how bad the trailer looks and then understand that the trailer makes this game look about 50 times better than it actually is.

This game and developer should be FINED.. and then have his face SLAPPED HARD… for one reason. He has maximum MOTION BLUR and NO SETTING TO TURN THIS CRAP OFF! WTF?!!? Yes, fine this guy AND slap the hell out of him!

It’s buggy, it’s not fun to play. It’s much more comedy than it is a fun “action shooter”. If you think ridiculous bugs like a bridge breaking apart for no reason and spinning at 3,000 spins per minute in mid air. Ugh. LOL! No, UGH!

As a lover of Dragon Ball, I really enjoyed playing Ultimate Wall Defense Force!

It’s an anime style tower defense game, and your main goal is to defeat all of the enemies before they destroy your tower. You play as a powerful character with several abilities to defend waves and waves of enemies. I found flying around to be super fun, and the large number of abilities to use to kill your enemies really nail the power fantasy of what it would be like to be Goku.

There are even boss encounters after each level which I found very engaging and challenging.
