Kero Blaster

Kero Blaster

Kero Blaster is a game that was suggested to me based on my ongoing search for run and gun shooters. It was created by Pixel (Daisuke Amaya), the same man that brought Cave Story to the world. Anyone looking for something like Cave Story should turn away immediately. This isn’t to suggest Kero Blaster is a bad game, but rather that it’s not an action platformer in the same vein as Metroid. It’s a linear platformer somewhat closer to Mega Man and Contra, but not notably similar to either of those series.

Kero Blaster is a side-scrolling action game, which constantly tries to fool you that it’s shorter than it really is. At first it wants you to believe that there is only 4 levels in the game, then bam, it’s actually 7, and then you find out that there is actually 7 more levels waiting for you in Overtime (or Zangyou) mode. If that’s not enough, after beating Overtime mode you will also unlock New Game+, called Bonus (or Omake) mode.

The story of the game is pretty simple - you’re a field technician who maintains teleporation devices throughout the world. Unfortunately, these teleportation devices are subject to some interdimensional parasites, which disrupt their work. So you have to reach a disrupted teleporter on foot, going from the nearest working teleporter, always through a very hazardous environment. It all starts simple, but things start to go downhill after your boss decides that having an interdimensional parasite as a pet is a good idea. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong? That’s the plot for the first part of the game, the second part has its own plot, which is focused less on saving the day and more on the characters themselves, but I don’t want to spoil it here for you.

Alright, so you found this game in the Free Games section or maybe you came knowing it’s a new game by mighty XWILKINX. As a person who played the game since its very launch, first on the Web-version, then on the itch.io version, and then here, I’m here to reroute your journey elsewhere, as you most likely won’t find what you’re looking for - a game you can play and enjoy. This review is focused on multiplayer, as IMHO singleplayer is extremely boring.

Let’s start with the positives tho, as game actually sports a couple of them:

Having played BRAIN/OUT, another 2D shooter very similar to this for countless hours, honestly I think this game is way better than B/O in a lot of ways. This game is what B/O could’ve been had it not been neglected and tried to be every single popular trend in the gaming industry to stay relevant. It really is a shame how B/O ended up in its current and most likely unrecoverable state. But enough of B/O’s current state. Lets look at the positives of WHY this game is B/O but IMO better.

First impressions - An underrated indie gem

–——————————————–

Solid writing. The writing is the point. Short and pregnant.

There are no grammar or spelling errors that throw you off.

Sure, that’s not a main aspect for this kind of game, but it

helps with the immersion.

Controls

Per statement of the developer the game orients itself on

classics and is therefore keyboard or controller only.

That might be off-putting for some, prefering mouse

controls.

But the controls are tight. You have full customization

SINGLE PLAYER EXPERIENCE

I started playing just a bit to take a break from my uni work and I spent 3 hours in the first sit. BEWARE, it’s a deep game with multiple choices, make sure you check the shop before you spent your ability points so you can buy the right things for yourself and the ship. If you spend your points lately the game will be way more challenging. The game needs more feedback to the player and be more clear at some points with the management of the ship and the ability points but, if you are patient and spend some time with it you will love it.

Has great potential as a coop 2D side scroller mixing both infantry combat and spaceship to spaceship combat. Some of the UI navigation is a bit clunky and takes some getting used to and will hopefully be polished over time.

Cool game kind.

pros:

  • great visual style. Very atmospheric and stylish levels.

  • action battles as you need to use hero abilities in time.

  • different weapons with which you can kill demons.

  • different bosses, not very difficult though, it’s okay.

  • intricate strange plot.

  • good jokes)

  • good price.

  • I liked the crazy dancing letters)))

cons:

  • some bosses and fights pissed me off.

  • some basics 2d scroller shooterics are not presented, but mechan yeah it’s experimental.

Real player with 6.8 hrs in game

Quite a cool game, of course not without drawbacks.

cool stuff:

1. Lots of action, especially in the end. Almost Serious Sam sometimes, but you always have proper gun to destroy demons.

2. Some bosses remind old good game console games.

3. Surprisingly lots of stuff for indie game - several main characters, lots of guns, lots of demons

4. Complex and interesting plot, but sometimes there is a feeling like watching Dune without reading book - very interesting, but understood nothing.

5. One of plot twist in the middle reminded me half life, that was quite cool.
