Steredenn

Steredenn

Yes, get it.

Some thoughts on it:

Steredenn is not infinite per se (Ala Rick Henderson, though I have not played that yet), as each run goes for a set number of stages if you can handle it.

Graphically the game is quite clever with the graphical design; it is super consistent. The sprites are inda bulky, but lends to improved visibility. The bullet patterns are never too tight that they cannot be manuverd plus the combination of enemy waves and bulltet patterns will always pose an interesting challenge to sort out.. The ships do have a tiny hit box, it is clearly shown at the beginning of the stage, a small reticule around your ships zooms in into the cockpit, clearly indicating the weak spot. Quite clever. The game has a cool way of displaying vital info on the sihp itself. Like the light that traverses your ship to indicate reloading times. Playing without the HUD is almost entirely possible.

Most of the time when I start a new game, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what to expect from it. Once in a while though, you can really be caught off guard and surprised. Steredenn is one of those games that surprised me, and fortunately it was a good one. It is a game that combines an old genre with a clever twist to produce something fresh and fun.

At its core, Steredenn is a horizontal shoot ‘em up. Many shmups require large amounts of memorization in order to be successful. Steredenn alters that idea by having semi-randomly generated stages. It works well, and the end result is that no two runs will be exactly the same. Not only are the stages randomly generated, but so are the upgrades and weapon drops. There are also hazards that may appear such as asteroid fields, meteor showers, laser rain, and more. Initially it can be very difficult to dodge some things. I recall seeing a few waves that I thought were impossible to dodge, but upon further practice I was able to solve them as if they were puzzles.

It’s a pretty fun and original shooter game reminiscent of Galaga.

What makes it good is it’s customization of ships and team composition.

Each ship has it’s own way of firing, and a different sub weapon, so the choice of ships aren’t merely cosmetic.

It also has a sick soundtrack which is definitely a bonus.

The sprite work is well done, I wasn’t confused as to what was what.

Overall it’s a pretty great game with multiple modes that you could play over and over again. Well done

Absolutely fantastic! This is the first game I’ve accidentally stayed up all night playing in a while, and one of the TOP 5 SCHMUPS I’ve ever played!

The graphics are ethereal!

The music fits the theme and context!

But my personal favorite…the underlying game systems are absolutely phenomenal!

The ship customization in particular is extremely well done…I can tell a lot of work went into the ship editor. Not only does it allow a high number of (unique and viable!) ship builds, but it also has a fantastic interface (controls). You can even set key bindings for different weapons right there in the ship builder.

“Just one more level and I can upgrade this subsystem…”

It’s one of those games. You know which ones I’m talking about. “Just 5 more minutes…” turn into “Why are the birds so loud this late? Oh…”.

So, what is the game about?

Basically it’s a 2D arcade-style side-scrolling shooter with 2 game modes (campaign&survival). What sets it apart from the generic shooter, apart from being quite polished and having rock solid gameplay&controls, is the upgrade/weapon handling. Between each level you are able to modify your ship more or less from scratch. Layout, engine, energy generators, energy storage, weapons, defensive systems and lots of other addons like tractor beams or loot magnets are at your disposal. And that’s about it.

This game is so much fun and so addictive and reminds me of some of my favourite arcade games growing up. It does not get boring and repetitive even having to restart after you die as the levels are never exactly the same as what you just did and because you can buy upgrades to your ship as you play those levels, they change each time and they are some surprises you do not expect. Another great feature is getting points that you can allocate to certain areas of your ship eg: weapons, shields, speed and you don’t those points when you have to restart a game. You also have the option to reset where you’ve allocated them so you can redo the skill tree if you mistakenly allocate some or change everything completely if you want to experiment with what suits your type of play style. I can’t recommend this game highly enough.

I’m from Buenos Aires, and I say kill ‘em all!

Disclaimer:

The main developer of the game is a good friend of mine and I’ve played many iterations of it over the years, so to say that I’m biased would be a bit of an understatement. As a result however, I like to believe that this also leaves me in a position where I have a good understanding of how the game will continue to evolve as it is being worked on.

That being said, as is customary let’s start with the pros as of today:

  • The controls are responsive and buttery smooth.

HOUSE OF GOD

HOUSE OF GOD

For five bucks I’m not really sure you can get a better game than this. It’s got fast paced top-down combat (Hotline Miami-esque) mixed with bullet hell elements. And then to top it all off it’s a roguelite. I’ve played 4 hours at the time of this review and just recently was able to get a run where I finished the game. I had picked up a mirror drone (which performs the same actions as the player just opposite) and then a couple of 4-way shot upgrades, so when I walked into a room I could just hold the trigger down and literally fill the room with bullets. Pretty sick.

House of God is an adrenaline inducing and visually pleasing roguelite packed with action!

This game has fast paced top-down combat and it feels great. Enemies actually pose a threat and can become very challenging when fought in large numbers. The fight always feels fair thanks to a wide variety of helpful items and upgrades. The boss battles are fun and creative although the amount of health is a bit ridiculous when you’re not in possession of multiple damage buffs.

The artstyle is beautiful. It’s very distinctive and unique. Things can become a bit hectic while playing but the game does a good job of indicating enemy positions/bullets and gives feedback at all times on what is happening. The music sounds great as well. I just wish there was more to listen to!
