Dimension Drive

Dimension Drive

For about 20 years I’ve been waiting for that one game that could satisfy my latent Axelay needs. Konami promised us a 2nd part but we were left wanting. Many shoot em ups passed revue these latest year and they were delicious iterations on the R type or ikaruga games. The unique gameplay of axelay remained unique, there wasn’t a single shoot em up game that bought an extra dimension or dynamic or gameplay element to the game like there was in Axelay, and so it remained ….. until Dimension Drive.

Dimension Drive is definitely a unique shmup, even in it’s early Access stage, coming across as a mix between your classic shmups and puzzle games like Portal. The dual-screen mechanic it uses a very simple in concept that, given proper exploration, has a ton of depth, something that the devs are clearly capitalizing on. It shows even in their current levels, gradually adding to each, either through obstacles, enemies, or even an additional mechanic. In fact, much of world 1 feels otherwise fairly polished, with some work still needing to be added to world 2.

Jamestown

Jamestown

First off, if you are interested in this game, I recommend getting Jamestown+ instead. It has two more stages and more ships.

Jamestown is a shmup with its stages primarily designed around co-op gameplay. However, enemy HP does scale so that enemies don’t become sponges if played solo. More about solo gameplay on higher difficulties later.

Jamestown doesn’t provide you with a bomb mechanic. Instead it has a hyper-like mechanic called vaunt. It will greatly increase dealt damage and create a shield which absorbs bullets upon activation. The duration of the vaunt can be increased by collecting the golden items. If it runs out, you’ll gain a significant amount of score, especially after a long vaunt. Cancelling the vaunt manually will provide you with brief invincibility and only provide you with a fraction of the score you’d get otherwise.

Sky Force Reloaded

Sky Force Reloaded

If you’re into scroll shooters with amazing graphics, hardcore player…. well this game is for you. It is a classic ported from android/IOS if I recall but runs smooth with no issues at all.

The positives:

  • Amazing graphics, the art is really well done, so crispy, rich and just amazing, love when these type of games get that superb graphic art and effects, ultra settings running at 800+ fps no hick ups, job well done

  • Awesome 8bit music to accompany and really up the enjoyment

A modern shoot ‘em up reminiscent of the classics!

Sky Force Reloaded (SFR) is a pure sequel which encapsulates the great gameplay & features from Sky Force Anniversary (SFA) , & expands or improves on them. Along with SFR having half a dozen more levels & an additional Nightmare difficulty tier, there is a range of new ships to unlock, technicians offering various power-ups & new enemies to challenge you.

Super Retro Fighter

Super Retro Fighter

This review is not final as the game is still in Early Access (v 0.9.7 beta at the time of the review). It may change to a positive review, depending on future changes, rebalancing and additions and I do believe that it has the potential to become a very fun game.

Super Retro Fighter is an individual stages vertizontal shmup that is intentionally designed to be frustrating. So far, it only has one mode. While it’s called Arcade Mode, it lets you select an individual stage to take on. You unlock one after another and gain upgrade points based on your performance that you can spend on extra ships, bombs and shot power. These will certainly aid you but the trial and error remains.

Really fun game. It has an 80’s retro vibe to the music which is pretty awesome.

There is 3 ships to choose from and each one is unique for different guns to accomodate different playstyles.

Some stages that can get pretty frustrating but at least you can stage select to retry same stage as often as you want.

Also, there is a system to make your ship stronger , buy more lives, etc.

Controls: It feels responsive using a gamepad.

I use a Dual Shock 4 wired with USB cable and game recognizes at a PS4 controller.

A Quiver of Crows

A Quiver of Crows

@C.:

_Les mouches bourdonnaient sur ce ventre putride,

D’où sortaient de noirs bataillons

De larves, qui coulaient comme un épais liquide

Le long de ces vivants haillons.

Tout cela descendait, montait comme une vague,

Ou s’élançait en pétillant ;

On eût dit que le corps, enflé d’un souffle vague,

Vivait en se multipliant._

A Quiver of Crows game. You, as a flying being, ‘a crow’, shooting with some lasers into some relentless ever-respawning undeads of various sorts.

This game needs some reviews, so I want to do a 2-hour first impression. The art in this game is astoundingly well developed. It wordlessly creates a lot of ambience as you fly your way through abandoned playgrounds and discarded remnants of civilization as a new dawn approaches a terrible day…

You play a freaking bird with laser weapons. If you’re still reading this, you want this game. It’s hard. Quite hard, but it can be enjoyed in bursts of 10 minutes or a whole rage inducing hour. The controls are extremely tight, and the weapons and enemies are all interesting. My favorite are the basic enemies, which I call the “Dental Association” as they chomp me to bits.

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, ‘If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.’. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- ‘Don’t ever smoke. Please don’t put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because this game gave me cancer anyway.

Apparently the blast zone is actually quite large. BlastZone 2 is a short indie side scrolling shooter (ala R-type but I wouldn’t say this game is that similar to R-type) made by solo developer Mat Edzenga. It features a number of different ships with different load outs, 8 stages filled with enemy ships, interesting 3D graphics and a few extra modes to try your hand at once you have beaten the main game. It also has local 2 players, controller support and costs only a few bucks.

its still fun even i already beat the game over and over again XD

My Table Review :

| About | Rate |

| Art/graphic | The art is unique and still good to play even in 2018 |

| Gameplay | It’s a skill shooter game, not really a skill but if you play normal mode its really already good for a chalange. |

My mum comes home hours after her disappearance. “Did you get me anything?” I ask. “I got you a few computer games…” she remarks as she trails of into the kitchen to put away her shopping. Could it be the new warcraft game? No that expansion comes out next month. She must have preordered it! This is going to be great! I scrounge through the plastic bags only to find a “100 games in a one” disc in that generic plastic sleeve that looks to be designed with word 2008. God knows from what cyberpunk pirating underground she gets these dodgy discs which are probably chinese botnet builders but I neverthless reluctantly try it.

Retro Classix: Heavy Barrel

Retro Classix: Heavy Barrel

The arcade version that most of us likely never played, having only had access to the NES and its simplified controls. You can easily tell the vast difference between the two when you go up a couple screens and dozens of enemies flood the screen very slowly. The difficulty is not really balanced for two people and is more like Serious Sam. You get sections where enemies just pile up on the screen and even have multiple bosses join in and follow you if you try to push through dying repeatedly. You have unlimited credits, but this is not something you can speedrun alone, since enemies chase you and those jetpack guys will circle you forever. BRING A FRIEND.

Spirit Arena

Really cool game. Similar to Binding of Isaac. Can be quite hard when surrounded by a lot of ennemies, you gotta be a bit strategic when you place yourself and try to survive.

Small game but quite fun.

What a horrible game. All you do is run around in a given space and shoot rows of enemies. There are no changes in this game.

The enemies get harder and their number raises from stage to stage, but that’s it. And you and your coop-partner will switch between the ability to shoot butterflies (blue) or mushrooms (red). You can only shoot one of them at a time (either the butterflies or the mushrooms, but not both).

Really boring concept.
