Ribby Rocket

Ribby Rocket

Ribby Rocket is a thrilling and story-rich action platformer about a frog with a will for revenge and a rocket launcher that shoots wherever it wants, but has unlimited ammo so it is what it is. The level design is inspired and memorable, I loved the landmarks such as the log. Each level had me on the edge of my seat and desperate to see what boss Aaron From had come up with next. I can tell he spent a lot of time testing and polishing this experience to be as tight and well executed as possible. In particular I loved the driving levels and the puzzles that involved using the pink jump pads. They were a breeze, but man were they fun.

Astrodogs

Astrodogs

TL;DR : Never played a StarFox game, but this goofy, chill little dog game makes me want to.

What is this funny little dog shooty game?

Astrodogs is a 3D, forward moving, on-rails shooter with enough charm to change your attitude for the entire day. The game revolves around 8 or so small stages with unique aesthetics, designs, music, enemies and bosses. (My personal favourites are Barkstille and Barkadia.)

I’ve never played something like this before, is it difficult?

At first, yes. But if you keep at it, you’ll learn the levels, you’ll learn the 5 techniques you need to know (4 different “special” attacks and a bullet-time mechanic). The bosses all have a gimmick to them which at first, is SUPER annoying, because you’ll be tanking damage and dealing none, but you’ll figure it out and feel like even Einstein is no match for your superior intellect.

As a die hard fan of Star-Fox. There hasnt been any games to come out that capture the on rails space shooting magic. This game does! I love the levels, music, controls and overall humour. A real treat!

Crisis Wing

Crisis Wing

Crisis Wing is an standard shooter experience, great music, great sound effects, great pixel art, and great for playing short and long sessions.

+The scoring system is fun, by collecting medals which can be chained in order to get more points.

+The power up system is interesting, to upgrade you need to collect 2 power ups of the same type, it adds challenge but also frustration, because you need to pay attention on which type you are going to pick up, it’s easy to screw up.

+It has Caravan mode.

lots of cheap moves, hard pressure when power ups drop leaving you in bad positions. yes you need them, so restart from last check point severely under powered. very very difficult opening sequences on the last 2 bosses (before you get to the boss) making you loose a life and start over and over again. bosses have a level of randomness the will kill you half the time. the power-ups have a level of randomness giving you bombs when you need power-ups, start over again. this game is a long slog of praying the stars align. Oh, and don’t accidentally exit out while getting frustrated on the last bosses, but you will, unless you can 1cc Dodonpachi or some equivalent.

NOMAD

NOMAD

The store page should be much clearer about this not actually being the ZX Spectrum game running in an emulator, but a remake running in the Unity engine.

It’s playable enough, but not an accurate depiction of what it originally looked or played like, despite reusing the Spectrum graphics.

What you’ll instantly notice for example is that while the game uses classic low res pixel graphics, the physics and movement don’t adhere to the ‘resolution’ of these graphics. You’ll see your ship move smoothly between pixels, which of course results in the pixels of the ship and the backgrounds not lining up to the same grid, making it kinda hard to look at.

This is an amazing game that makes you feel so powerful. At first I was a little confused about what was happening, but i quickly go on and had lots of fun. The style of the game is just so amazing. I will be playing this game a lot and have fun doing it. It would be nice to see a power up that is a trap that you can put down, and if the bad ships hit it they blow up.
