Gaia Beyond

Gaia Beyond

Gaia Beyond is a handcrafted 2D Action-RPG in space.

-multiple save slots, quicksave and quickload, autosaves.

-open world

-quest with multiple solutions

-ship building, upgrade-able weapons

-fight stations with your ship

Sure we’re fans of the genre and bound to like the game more than the usual fare, but those looking for an original and thrilling, handcrafted open world 2d space shooter, this will not disappoint. Gaia Beyond introduced a world with characters I actually cared about, and combat gameplay I could get behind. This game really does have something for every sci-fi shooter fan: Good writing, characters with depth(you get to meet the most spaced-out guys in the galaxy), huge amount of side quests(some with multiple solutions), factions, intimidating ships, upgrade-able ships and weapons, mining, trading, nice OST etc. It was not a very demanding game. You were just a simple nobody mining and shooting your way up, trying to make your way in this seemingly peaceful mysterious space. While all the ships were actually flying in the game world in real time, most of the time it was quite relaxed. Some fights were tough when I didn’t upgrade or choose my guns properly. It played especially good on big monitor(this game has 4K support). No other 2d space shooter I’ve ever played has impressed me like this one. Maybe Starsector has better combat than this but that’s the only thing it is better. I’d played 3030 Deathwar Redux , Star Valor, and Starcom Nexus, this game is better. After playing for around 30 hours , I doubt that I had reached even halfway of the main story, this game is loooooong. Yuki, one of the game writer, said the game is still a bit rough around the edges, but I could see that they were updating and patching up the game almost monthly, and they were quite active on the forum answering questions and acknowledging bugs, so I would not worry about that at all.

I would recommend this so much, but…I’d wait until the main quest is extended by at least 300%.

In a nutshell: Great game but I’d wait until the main quest is extended by at least 300%. Don’t bother grinding unless you really want to, regardless of main story.

Long review: This is a very cool 2D “Galaxy on fire 2-ish” space action RPG game where you explore, mine, hunt and upgrade your ships and weapons. Kind of like Zelda / Diablo in a spaceship and a huge map set in our solar system in a dystopian future.

Pros:

  • Nice concept, nice cut scene.

  • Exotic story.

  • Gameplay, graphic, sound track, sound effect are not so bad.

Cons:

  • Game progress is very slow at begin you must do many quest to get new gears. (doesn’t mean mining or crafting for me)

  • Enemies are really hard to fight for beginner. (no problem when you equipped with end game gears)

  • Your ship will flying very slow at begin, and the story line are quest running.

  • Seem the game are in development.

I need to say something to developers. Did you try your game before release ?

I started playing this when arteries was the only map available. The game has come a long ways, the new maps have been enjoyable, and while they still have some things to work on and bugs to crush, I’ve found myself enjoying what is very much like a space / aircraft fighter game with resource harvesting.

Also, if you are a fan of movies like Innerspace or Fantastic Voyage, you may find yourself sucked into this even easier.

While not perfect, the game is very well done from a mechanics standpoint. The story lines can be a bit janky at times and in its current state there are quite a few issues in the second half of the game where apostrophes and extra line breaks make the text less than ideal. At its core, this is a shoot-em-up space combat game on a two dimensional plane so more like driving than flying, but the visuals are interesting and the gameplay solid. Interested to see more development on this one.

Multiple Gun Setups

Multiple Ships and Secret Unlockables

Multiple Upgrades

Great galaxy mapping system

Star systems really submerge the player; all of them have multiple points of interest, ways to make credits, quest lines and possible enemies or places to upgrade your ship.

Mission progression setup well; by following the progression of mission the player gets deeper into the game.

Battles seem fast and fun

Multiple enemy types to deal with; some fast and less accurate, others slower but more powerful

Planet’s Edge

Planet’s Edge

When the alien craft entered Earth’s solar system, the human race was alive with excitement. However, when it was accidentally fired upon, the consequences were dire. In a burst of electromagnetic energy, the entire planet Earth disappeared, leaving its gravity well and the moon behind.

In this open world, sci-fi role-playing game, you are part of the Moon base team on a desperate mission to bring Earth back. You must assemble and equip your crew, customize your ship and set out in search of unique parts to create the Centauri Drive, a device your team hopes will reverse the electromagnetic phenomenon that swallowed Earth.

Travel between dozens of stars, harvest resources to repair and upgrade your equipment, meet and negotiate with friendly (and hostile) aliens, and do whatever it takes to stay alive and bring Earth back.

Planet’s Edge features:

  • An open-ended story driven by the player

  • Dynamic, real-time spaceship combat

  • Mining, trading and puzzle solving

  • Turn-based ground combat

  • Customize and upgrade your ship for any situation

  • Select your crew (or clone a new one) and equip them for success

Rebel Galaxy

Rebel Galaxy

So here it is-my Rebel Galaxy review. Full disclosure-I’m friends with the devs and got an advanced copy of the game. That said I’ve done my best to be impartial. My Tl’dr opinion? I love it and was well over 100 hours in before I took a break from it. This is so many things about space games I love rolled into one.

The Setting.

The game goes for a Firefly/Wing Commander:Privateer/Freelancer vibe. The solar systems in this game are on the wrong side of the galactic tracks and haven’t had a bath in aeons. They’re rude, crude and filled with rocks and junk. Rebel Galaxy features an interesting cast of characters. It’s one of the games unfortunate downsides that you never really get to know any of them very well. It’s loaded with the kind of wink/nudge humor you’d find in TV series like Farscape or Firefly-for example one of the commodities you can trade is called ‘Narco-cola’ and it is just that. Powerful narcotics in the form of carbonated beverage. If you’re a fan of stuff like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy you’ll appreciate the humor.

The more I play Rebel Galaxy, the more I’m reminded of Freelancer, which is unfair to both games. The only thing that they really have in common is that they are both space-games in the vein of Elite, but with a thin story to get you into the game. Aside from that, they have very little in common in terms of gameplay or story or mechanics (aside from what they’ve inherited from Elite.

You play as a nameless, faceless space jockey who’s been left a broken-down corvette (the way you do) by your aunt, and told to meet up with her. This thrusts you into the story which introduces mechanics such as scanning, communicating, mining, trading, and mainly getting around the space. Like Freelancer, you’re initially restricted to just the first sector, though in this case, it’s not because of story, but because (a) you don’t have a jump drive and those are expensive and (b) you’ll probably die immediately because of the higher level enemies.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

I waited almost a full year before attempting to play this game. I am aware that the launch was sketchy and the game was packed full of bugs / glitches. As of patch 1.31 CyberPunk was a worth while game purchase for me. I did enjoy the almost 180 hours of playtime I put in. However driving in this game stinks bad, car handling physics felt very arcade like and also felt like I was always driving on wet slick surfaces. I can’t remember how many times I’ve lost control of my vehicles flying off the side of a bridge or overpass and take my car swimming with me - Laughable… Racing missions, ugh… what a disgrace to racing games. One other thing, the faster you drive, the most deserted and desolate the city becomes. Driving fast turns the city of Night City into a ghost town. The game engine can’t keep up with the asset loading buffer, so in an attempt to keep the bare bones city going, all npc cars and people disappear. I recommend not driving at all in CyberPunk, walk, run, hop skip run walk… whatever… or ride shotgun as a passenger in a vehicle! If you have no choice but to drive, do it slowly… feather the throttle and keep it in the granny lane at all times. Far better immersive gaming experience in what was supposed to be Witcher 4 in a modern city. At this point, I’d be a happy CyberPunk gamer if CD Project Red gave me Roach to ride in Night City. Slow and steady wins the race here,

It took me a year to finish this game because I kept getting pissed off while playing it (finished it a couple of days ago from writing this review). So you have over 180h in it, why do you still not recommend it? Because this game is the dictionary definition of edging and then leaving you with blue balls. I really, really wanted to like it but I was hit with disappointment after disappointment.

The good:

  • it’s a beautiful game design wise

  • it has some memorable side-quests that I really liked

Hello Games did not deliver on what they promised when they released this game and had hells brought down upon them for it (deserving).

Since then they have fixed bugs, added tons of polish, tons of content, tons of extras and have delivered the game they had promised and then some - all WITHOUT ASKING FOR AN EXTRA DIME!

Whereas some other developers released VR versions of their games and had the nerve to charge another $50+ for it, Hello Games released a fantastic and very polished VR play style for NMS, again, without asking for a dime.

Real player with 566.4 hrs in game

I like this game alot but it has some issues that could be fixed.

issues:

base building is a pain because in freecam I cant move the camera up and down with a button like i can in screenshot mode.

and free placement is nice if i could move the part up and down with a button instead of it being completely tied to the camera

The battery until discharged timer is broken(it counts up not down) making figuring out how many solar panels you need difficult

last thing there are very annoying restrictions on where you can summon your ship and freighter and odd restrictions in multiplayer(LAN) like not being able to have two player owned freighters in the same system like how would that be a issue as players are spread so far apart. And the long range inventory access letting you access the freighter inventory and not your storage containers when not in the same system like they are on the same ship why cant i access them.

Red Faction Guerrilla Steam Edition

Red Faction Guerrilla Steam Edition

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a sequel of the underrated first-person shooter Red Faction from 2001, taking place exactly 50 years later after the events of the first game. The original Red Faction had a revolutionary concept - the player could destroy nearly everything - something the developers were sadly not fully able to accomplish. It only had a basic story, but shined in gameplay (in my opinion it was better than Half-Life): we had to battle our way through the ranks of the evil Ultor Corporation that terrorized and experimented on the miners working on Mars, through non-stop combat, including vehicles and the use of environmental destruction.

Steamworks is here, the great tyrant GFWL is dead and gone! A round of applause is in order for Nordic Games for reviving this wonderful game. Now, on with the review.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is an insanely fun game, let’s get that out of the way right now. The open world nature combined with the destructable nature of almost every structure in the game makes for one of the most enjoyable, destructive romps you’ll ever have in a game. While you play through the story mode you’ll have a wealth of options for how to deal with objectives, many of which involve the destruction of key buildings. Perhaps you’d like to get up close and personal with your hammer, maybe you’d rather hop in a truck and send it flying through the side of a building or you might just hail it with rockets from afar, all of which are perfectly viable options.
