Gladio

Gladio

Gladio has a satisfying gore mechanic and unique fighting system. The game does have its issues though, blocking sometimes does not activate at all and kicking sends enemies through the map or past the invisible wall where I cannot reach them, forcing me to restart. Overall this game is a blast and it will surely develop further into an awesome game in the future, but for now you should avoid kicking!

Recommendations:

-More weapons and maybe a shield

-The ability to mix and match armor

-The option to choose which enemies spawn

When first looking at Gladio one might think it is a tiny fighting game with with no real ingame progress and attacks that could seriously use some work. You would not be wrong. The player is in a small-ish box and has to fight enemies, the only progress is watching the wave counter go up, and attacks can seem quite stupid at times.

Still, this game can be a lot of fun when you lack something to do. Add some bounce or whatever music floats your boat (the game has no soundtrack), and you are in for half an hour of adrenaline while trying to crack that level 3 armor.

The game still feels somewhat unfinished, but they actually fixed the combat so that it’s fun again. That, and the amazing mod support means that I can’t but recommend the game. It’s a bit pricey, but it offers some of the most satisfying melee combat ever seen in a game. Perhaps even more satisfying than Dark Souls or the like. Despite it’s tragic state after a ridiculously long development time, it’s a cult classic and one of my favorite games for a simple reason; The combat is so good. It’s my go-to I-wanna-clap-some-people-to-death-or-die-trying game. If you love melee action combat games like me, you can’t pass this game.

Amazing. I got this from Humble Monthly, installed it, and in one sitting completed the main story. Now it’s 3 in the morning and I’m writing a review. The main story is indeed 3 hours long, but it held my attention by being so fun to play and look at that it passed by way too fast! I haven’t gotten to try the other 2 stories yet, but I can say a few things about the game, and from now on, I’ll be referencing the main story.

The good:

  • Movement: it’s amazing. There’s so many ways to get around, it feels so fluid to get from place to place, and the best part: Moving around is FUN! If I can have fun just getting from place to place, it’s a game I’ll enjoy. I’ve seen a couple reviews saying that the movement doesn’t do what you want it to do, but I just don’t see that in this game. Everything is spot on. Whenever the character did something wrong, it was always my fault, not the game.

Doggo Dig Down

Doggo Dig Down

This game seems like a low effort student project. No sprite animations, text-to-voice narration, and simplistic & repetitive gameplay make this a very unpleasant experience. You will spend the entire game digging a path down, while continuously bringing the dirt back to the surface to build a path into the sky to get the necessary power-ups.

Doggo Dig Down is boring, and not worth $4.

Developer/Publisher Review:

The developer read my 2019 review of his game and took some of its feedback to include in later updates of the game. The developer has also been proactive.

Game Review [Outdated]:

As the store description states, it is a casual crafting game that is meant to provide a relaxing experience and allows you to kill some time creating some pixel art. It’s also an easy game for achievement hunters.

A lot of the game’s mechanics come from Roppy Chop Studios’s older games such as Bub Block, Super Markup Man, and Build ‘n Bump. There’s a potential from the game’s mechanics but it is supposed to be a casual game.

Höll Space 5D6

Höll Space 5D6

This game is very obviously a work in progress and there’s a lot of rough edges. However, when you look past them and forgive the unpolished technical state, you’ll find a promising project with a lot of potential that’s pretty fun to play even now.

The first episode takes place in a broken space station (or a space ship?) full of interconnected paths that are a joy to explore and to get lost in. Don’t expect any hand-holding, though. The game gives you no directions and you’re left to figure things out on your own.

Real player with 10.7 hrs in game

The game is in early access; According to the forum, it is just one developer, but the visuals and map look surprisingly good. However, the visuals are much further along than the rest of the game. I have played all of the first episode, and it has been entertaining. There are many hidden ways to discover and find within the levels to move around and get to the different rooms and locations.

If you like to explore without handholding or, in some cases, even getting directions in a game, then this game is fun to play at this point in its development. If that is not your thing, then the game is in its current version, probably not for you.

As others have said: It’s extremely glitchy, the controls are cumbersome a lot of times, and I ended up flying through walls more often than skating on them.

The premise of the game is really intriguing, and I would like to see this game in a more complete state, but as of right now it is virtually unplayable, unless you enjoy breaking games.

An example of glitches, besides flying through walls: You can die in the pause menu, you can manipulate your dead character in the pause menu, you can die while still paused after dying while manipulating your character in the pause menu. You can fly through floors that are solid on the top surface but not on the bottom surface.

Area 86

An excellent and innovative game.

You can smash glass in this game- what else can you ask from the developer? The controls are a bit hard to get used to, but with some practices you’ll get it.

Bugs do exist, but the devs listen to bug reports on Discord and do make attempts to fix them.

This stupid clumsy robot won’t let me sleep… the game is so addictive :-)

The robot controls kind of sluggish and shattered objects on the ground make things more wonky. But this was done in a way that makes the game challenging and not frustrating … ok, I was lying, it is frustrating at times … in a good way.

The graphics are crisp and charming and I love the music, although there seems to be only one song. The developer is doing a great job at fixing bugs too :-)

World of Contraptions

World of Contraptions

The game has so much more potential. The art style of the components would certainly lend itself to a change of scenery, I was disappointed at the constant white and grey levels and white overcast sky.

In terms of building, its very difficult to make smaller devices as the snapping tools (while quite effective) were incredibly limiting. I wouldn’t mention it if it were helping with physics bugs, but it certainly does not. I can’t count how many times an otherwise very simple machine just floated away due to a clipping issue.

if you’ve ever played and enjoyed ( i think it was an old 2d flash game ) called Fantastic contraption , well this is it but in 3D with so so much more.

a very polished physics builder to solve puzzles

the tutorial is just enough to get you started, without making it a cakewalk, letting you discover new pieces for yourself.

game runs very smooth no glitches discovered so far

Treasures of the Aegean

Treasures of the Aegean

Terrific exploration, action, visuals and music.

It would be my GOTY if not for some irritations, the main one I’ll detail for your benefit.

The game is not a puzzle-platformer, rather a precision platformer on the clock with imprecise controls.

At the core is a time loop, a feature du jour with no added value for the player, only drawbacks such as interrupting your exploration, ruining your current progress, forcing you to take breaks, revisit the same places and redo the same parkours again and again and again. And maybe again.

Very enjoyable game. Fast moving platform adventure - perfect for a Saturday afternoon!

Nice comic-book visuals, evocative soundtrack, interesting gameplay challenges, flowing movement controls.

What I love is that the game doesn’t hold your hand. No AAA-style objective markers here. The game reveals itself to you over time through exploring the map and uncovering the plot, puzzles and goals. It doesn’t get too obscure or head-scratching.

Video Review Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7pW6vU-n_Y

This is more of a neutral recommendation than anything else. Playground VR offers a decently sized city filled with lots of activities to chose from. While this appears good at first, there does seem to be a bit of a quantity over quality issue with these activities as most of them you will grow tired of fairly quickly. That being said though, I did enjoy playing this game for a couple of hours and I do see potential here for something greater. If you are looking for an open world VR game where you can just mess around with and have fun then I think you won’t be too disappointed; but if you are looking for something deeper then this might not be for you.

Perfect for streaming

I love the way Source Byte works. They have set the task to create a fun sandbox for VR, so they did it! I played with friends and everyone had fun watching the clumsy attempts to do something.

This game is perfect for streaming.

If you want to entertain your audience, then this is the best way to do it. There are so many activities that you can do, funny sounds and instruments.

I’m waiting for more games!

Amazing Frog?

Amazing Frog?

Awesome game!

At first I was like, ‘What the hell, all you do is run around, fart and fall over’ but my daughter likes watching Pungeance on the tube, and I can’t really let her play GTA5, so we kept playing…

And wow! once you figure out how things work, learn about some unlocks and start two player (Controllers highly recommended, camera moves much better with them) the hours will fly by. Getting some unlocks feel like genuine achievements / lessons in perseverance, the LOL key and microscopes spring to mind.

Real player with 168.7 hrs in game

We (my housemates and I) have played this game since it was on the OUYA, and missed it so much that we bought it on PC.

The Amazing Frog is a game about messing around, persistence, and discovery. If you wanted to go all literary-analysis on it, you could say that the ease with which you fall down and get back up again plays into the theme of persistence. But honestly I think the devs just thought it was funny.

The main gameplay loop is something like this. Mess around until you find something weird and new to interact with. Try lots of things with it until it unlocks something. With the new unlocks, rinse and repeat. This loop wasn’t really present in the OUYA version, and I think it’s an overall improvement that lengthens the appeal of the game and gives it an occasional magical quality. Don’t be expecting amazing discoveries though; we’re talking small stuff here. This game works best with no explanation and little to no expectations. It is exactly as dumb as it looks, with lots of fart humor and the occasional pop culture or current events reference. I think the unabashed silliness of it goes so dumb that it wraps back around to funny for us.
