First Strike: Classic

First Strike: Classic

I love the game, but it has some issues that bother me. I’d love to see them fixed in an update at some point.

  1. Sometimes I start the game and there is some kind of bug that doesn’t allow me to click on anything and expand or build nukes/cruise missiles. I end up backing out of the game and starting a new one, then it just starts working and lets me click things.

  2. I can have a single warhead headed towards my country, but when I send up a missile to take it out, the missile instead goes after missiles heading to/from allies or enemy countries. This means that sometimes I have to send up three or four warheads just to finally hit ONE warhead that is actually about to hit my country. A lot of times I can’t launch that many in time to stop it from hitting mine. This is frustrating. Surely this could be changed so that missiles only target incoming warheads for OUR country only and not outgoing from some other ally/enemy country that aren’t even headed for my country.

The Seven Years War (1756-1763)

yes this game is like total war but there are some crucial differences,

-of course one man cannot provide the same graphics as creative assembly but this is already the only negativ difference, allthough it should be mentioned that the graphics are amazing for a one man project

-this game is a rts: no round-based movement exploits like in total war, so army movement on the campaign map is also part of stretegic gameplay as it should be, no helplessly watching armies taking your undefended cities

I am going to be as honest as possible here. I am an old grognard who loves games varying in compexity from Gary Grigsby, through the Scourge of War series to Total War and some of the great mods that have been made. The point is if there is a new grand stategy game that comes out I will buy it. No refunds, I will gradually work hard to understand the game and if it isn’t quite a diamond in the rough to start with I’ll be patient and revisit from time to time.

There is a huge amount of promise in this game. The mechanics make sense and I do love the passion that has gone into making this game. I will say straight away that it gets a recommend from me simply because of the ambition and effort of the one man who put it together.

World War III: Black Gold

World War III: Black Gold

A fun albeit, dated, rts that gives you the most enjoyment from the skirmishes. They are rather large skirmishes, and I mena LARGE, I was honestly surprised to see the number of AI you could add, it was this feature, really that made the game so much fun for me, the large scale rts battles made this well worth the, less than a dollar, I spent on it. In terms of gameplay it is rather standard and sometimes tedious, though despite all its short comings, I’d say if it’s on sale, pick it up if you want another rts, nothing too special but for less than a dollar you get your money’s worth.

I like old games

But World War III: Black Gold is not a game I love, but I won’t say, it’s quite a solid game. But the biggest problem with this game is the FPS lock. Throughout the game I had to play 20 FPS, which was annoying and disturbing.

World War III: Black Gold is an RTS game in which we participate in the war and must destroy the enemy base. To achieve this, we need to expand our base and then create units that we will send to fight. As in any RTS, we have buildings that generate income, those in which we can create units and the generators that power our buildings.

9th Company: Roots Of Terror

9th Company: Roots Of Terror

I picked up this Russian made RTS game in the Steam sale.

The game is a tactical level RTS that follows the the 9th Company of the 345th OPPD through 9 years of warfare in Afghanistan against the insurgents and yes it is the same 9th Company in the film 9th Company. The game even has clips from the film.

The campaign is good but short and you do a nice variety of missions. The tutorial at the start is comprehensive enough for you to get a quick grasp of the controls.

It also has some nice realistic elements. Soldiers can get injured and can’t fight until attended by a medic and if you’re not fast enough may die from their injuries. You also get off screen support fro missions such as D-30 artillery strikes, rocket artillery and Hind CAS (all of which are extremely deadly) and so on. If you lose your radioman you lose your access to support. For some missions you get armoured vehicles to control and if these get hit you can bail the crews before the vehicle brews up. It’s best to take care of them as they provide a great fire-power advantage over your enemy.

Grab it on a sale.

While the game has a good few bugs (I’ve made a steam guide to help avoid them.) I personally enjoy this RTS, keep in mind that the store-page is inaccurate as the non-linear mission structure/morale system and a few other mechanics were actually cut and (like a good few steam games) the description seems to be out-dated.

What you do get is a linear, generally pretty decent budget RTS with some good ideas brought down by clearly being rushed out the door which is a shame as I really enjoy it, you will have to manage your units ammo for instance by scavenging/sharing ammo between them or you’ll end up having to try using your knife, you will be able to have snipers take out the gunner/driver of a truck so you can take it for yourself and you can call in artillery if the situation’s bad enough, these mechanics all together make for a pretty fun experience and the fact the game is set in the rare setting of the Afghan war and with the Russians as the player faction means this is an obscure RTS that’s pretty fun.

Act of War: Direct Action

Act of War: Direct Action

A superb, well detailed RTS where a varied army composition is needed and diverse strategies are key to victory as combat can end quickly and brutally. Gameplay is a great mix of casual and hardcore RTS with the usual base building and unit deployment except resources aren’t found in deposits instead are earned either from POW’s or finite oil fields/banks/ammo bunkers. Buildings also utilize realistic gameplay so you’ll have to MedEvac injured troops to field hospitals or ferry a heavily damaged vehicle to a repair depot. Lastly buildings can be garrisoned on different levels when the building provides like on the roof or other visible floors to defend from not just within the structure. Infantry units can depending on the unit type go prone stance for camouflage and gain additional cover at the cost of speed as well as storm a garrisoned building with varying levels of success depending on unit type. Sometimes your units or the enemy’s forces have a chance to survive a battle due to either heavy injuries or are part of a surviving vehicle crew unless captured, repatriate or healed they will eventually bleed to death or stay put for the enemy’s gain. Killing POW’s is useless unless to prevent them from exposing your stealth units so your better off getting them for more money. Vehicles like infantry aren’t all around powerful units so you can’t zerg in this RTS thankfully. Aircraft are treated as off-map support with varying aircraft for different sortie missions but all can be shot down if not properly deployed or if the Air Control Tower gets destroyed. WMD’s are in-game too but whats unique as well is counter WMD defensive teach to prevent such disaster. As your units gain veterancy they will become generally more effective and even heal/repair when idle so its best to keep your army well supported in the long term. Each faction is unique with their own tech trees, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. The US Armed Forces has specialized firepower but needs electricity and descend their DEFCON alert level to access and maintain new tech. Task Force Talon is all about speed and flexability not needing electricity for a direct tech tree but doesn’t have the punch of the other two factions. The Consortium lastly requires you to use all of your units to get the best out of them. The story and characters are set in a well made semi-futuristic Military Sci-Fi theme with an interesting cast and a simple but effective plot that’s better, more interesting then most RTS stories especially if your a fan of Tom Clancy’s style writing though the main antagonist doesn’t have the same impact as say Kane of Nod is like. Cutscenes are made using a combination of real actors and CGI giving a nice cinematic feel for each missions all in a more realistic, gritty, serious take on the genre that’s more engaging and enjoyable then just a simple briefing. Missions have great variety that makes you utilize different strategic skills without being unfair with great AI as you increase the difficulty. Multiplayer is available as well with optional AI enemies or allies in good number of maps and nice number of game modes though its not functional online as its GameSpy so you’ll need 3rd party software like Hamachi or Game Ranger to do so. Graphics are dated and some animations too but it still has great detail with unit interactions, building functions, battlefield scarring and no unit limit help make it still impressive. Audio is passable with mostly similar unit dialogue and the soundtrack is good but limited. In summery a well made RTS despite its age for those wanting to find that niche for an in between casual and hardcore experience and more depth then to simply zerg.

Introduction:

Act of War: Direct Action is a tactical RTS game set in the near future, which tells us the story of the conflict between US forces and terrorist baddie who went full mad berserk mode and almost made it to Nuclear war. Original game was released in 2005, so this is more of a retrospective review, as judging the game according to modern standards would be wrong.

A drama behind the scene:

From the actual announcement, Act of War was possessed as a straight rival to C&C Generals. I still have that fancy magazine where journalist made a review, calling AoW a killer of Generals. In all honesty, even if developers did not initially plan to fight C&C on their own field, the rumors and speculations aren’t born on empty place: both games really have similar gamestyle and gameplay, despite, quite often, having somewhat different approaches.

CPCW is an acceptable good Tactic-Strategy game. In my Opinion a good game to play on rainy weekends with a nice cup of coffee. Details:

Graphics - 8/10

The ingame graphic is awesome detailed. Enviroment looks close steps to realistic, nicely done with much love to detalis. Also the realistic reactions are nice to look at (example: Weather / grenade in forest burns trees down / ramming electricity pylons make’em flash and fall / after some gaming time the night comes and the tanks use activate headlights,….)

While it is a tad different compared to the previous installations from the series it still is a very good game worth playing.

It has kept some elements from the previous games but it feels more like Company of Heroes which is not at all a bad thing. It is still squad heavily squad based with infantry having different variations to a squad as opposed to specific squad for example the regular SMG squad can be a Bazooka Squad or a Mortar Squad as well, Ranger MG Squad can be Bazooka and Flamethrower Squad as well. Tanks feel a little better now in terms of armor and the impact of the shells as well and no longer occupy double their model size. They also have field / headquarters upgrades that you can buy with Prestiege, the in game currency which you get from completing objectives, upgrades like armor skirts, better guns, AA defense, etc.

Cossacks 3

Cossacks 3

Before anything, let me tell you a bit about GSC’s history.

This Ukrainian game developper, founded in 1995, was reputed for RTS (Cossacks) and FPS (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) games. In 2004, they opened up a branch company named “GSC World Publisher”, allowing them to publish games without being EA’d, I believe…

In 2007, they made S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, which was followed by 2 brilliant sequels in 2008 and 2009 respectively. They tried to port it into consol. However, due to a lack of manpower, they instead decided to make S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, but that game was cancelled since they were then on a financial problem. December 9 2011 would mark their official disclosure. Vostok Games was created not long after by the GSC staff members with their F2P game Survarium. On december 22 2014, after a controversy with another game developper that I won’t name, GSC re-opened and announced what will become Cossacks 3.

Cossacks: Art of War

Cossacks: Art of War

It’s difficult not to appreciate the class of Cossacks. Its gameplay focus is well split into all the aspects that characterise an RTT game: game rhythm, upgrades, buildings, unit variety and relevance, population realism, battle simulation… One has got to admire the effort put into crafting the unit functioning and overall building management in this one. Superb.

Cossacks offers plenty of pleasurable elements. First, there’s the outstanding number of nations, each with its own architectural identity (wonderfully done, by the way); as well as the outstanding number of unique units and their precise importance on the battlefield or in the development of one’s domains. Second, there’s the realistic representation of population growth, with civil infrastructure costing you more as your settlement expands, although there is no set limit for your population. Third, there’s the artillery/infantry details, amazing to watch as they engage in battle. Fourth, there’s the customisable gameplay, as the options for a skirmish match are reasonable (type of terrain, type of elevation, game speed, resources, etc.), gathering all the good and fair choices everybody should have when playing a free-build or skirmish game mode in any RTS/RTT. Last but not least, the naval conflicts: it’s just too exciting to watch your territories and riches grow and have to formulate quick strategies with your coffers and coal reserves so you can build a solid, fearsome fleet that can outrun the enemy’s.

I think the game is an all time classic rts with an old school feel & some dated mechanics. Pathfinding can be unreliable & frustrating especially when marching a large army, also occasionally you will encounter some strange AI behavior. Other than that there are many positives in my opinion, 8k population, good soundtrack, cool civs even if some are quite similar, great artillery & naval battles, enjoyable single player skirmish & campaigns. Good times with retro feel for strategy fans

This game is very interesting.

You will found classic mechanical (collect, build, train) but you found good new mechanicals like vehicles that you can have with the capture of strategic point, a cover system, etc… You can’t go with your army in one pack because one roquet can kill all of them!

It’s a challenge and I really like it. If you like RTS you can go !
