Airships: Conquer the Skies

Airships: Conquer the Skies

-All statements are relevant as of 1/31/21. No guarantees are made for future versions of Airships!-

Let me start off by saying that I am utterly and hopelessly addicted to this game.

Ever since I bought Airships (Or ACTS, as I’ll be using) back in late 2018, I fell in love with it. The game’s kept giving, the developer has remained true to his word and an amazing gentleman, and the community (Especially on the Discord) continues to grow and develop in wondrous ways. As I don’t expect you to go through my various paragraphs of gushing, I’ll put the TL;DR statement here:

Pretty cool game for those who like relatively free-form building, designing units to deal damage and mitigate it for themselves. Especially if you’re into diesel- and/or steampunk.

The things you have to account for and balance out in a unit’s design are quite numerous and varied; Everything costs something and everything weighs something. A ship’s maximum altitude - which is very important -is determined by its weight vs. lift, for example. This is probably the strongest part of the game.

So in combat, you’ll be witnessing how those designs fare against the NPC (or enemy player) units; Did you actually give your ship enough coal to stay aloft through the average battle? Oh, it turns out this one has a massive structural weakness and will be cut in half by one or two rockets. Great job!

Micro Annihilation

Micro Annihilation

Game was just released, but there is already enough content that you can play for few hours. It is interesting mix of XCOM / C&C.

While playing the game you find out how it would be if you would be the size of the ant and you have to survive the onslaught of insects. Sometimes it feels like zombie apocalypse but that there are ants instead of zombies.

You can contact developer on Discord and he will listen to your opinions and try to integrate them in his game. There is normally just few days between updates, so update interval is really short.

This game takes me back to nostalgic days of Starcraft and Total Annihilation. Only now my units don’t always need me to babysit them to defend themselves. The conceit is fun, tiny people versus mutant bugs, and the gameplay is rather intuitive. I’m really enjoying myself :)

Edit: More bigger maps!

My first!

Just played the first handful of missions and a random battle and I am enjoying it immensely. The type of game I wish I could make if I had the time and the patience. The quick pickup and play gameplay is awesome, I am never one who enjoys the tedious aspect of resource management (I prefer Sudden Strike to Starcraft). At 7 bucks, give it a try to help encourage more of this in the future.

A very cool neon rts game. I could only reccomend to brighten up the levels a bit, because it’s a bit hard to see what you’re doing.

LandCombat:Ren

LandCombat:Ren

It’s a strategy game that focuses on ground war.

[Worldview]

The continental Tiracian has the Terra Empire and the National Union of Ren(Aron, Baekra, Cheollok, and Zili) is at odds with each other. The Continental War, which broke out as a result of the confrontation between the two camps, has decimated the power of all nations.

It served as an opportunity to make. The Royal Government of the Kingdom of ‘Baekra’ prevented the invasion of the Terra Empire in the Continental War.

It has consumed a great deal of financial and military power and has thus far been unable to exert complete control over the entire country. Each region and city in the kingdom of ‘Baekra’ is still trying to survive.

[Game Introduction]

Players start in a specific area, collect resources, produce a variety of units (trams, vehicles, etc.) and recruit heroes.

‘Unit Troops’ consisting of units and heroes are used to defend friendly forces and bases, or to expand friendly forces, with hostile forces in the region and unmanned tanks (UGVs).

Do not avoid battle. It gradually expands its power by occupying bases in other regions and forms a united kingdom. When the time is ripe, we will conquer the Terra Empire.

We welcome peace on a unified continent.

Campaign is a bit unfair cuz of the pre-set defenses of the enemy: ton of artillery and strong defense lines + random encounters where I have to fight more units than I have for the whole mission, this makes me buy repair trailers, and the repairing is so slow, and there’s the ammo problem too… missions are usually 45+mins where the actual action is like 30% the rest are the traveling and the restoring of units. The movement is really terrible, units collide, not to mention on narrow bridges going across is nearly impossible especially with more units. The cinematics' graphic stayed the same bad quality despite of the HD Remaster.

Your units gain xp, and can lvl up 2 times. That gives them additional armor and damage. They transfer to another mission. That’s main strenght and also main issue with this game.

Every time you finish map you obtain 1000 $ - you can buy new units and/or upgrades.

If you loose unit in battle… best solution is to reload save or restart map. Otherwise you might not make it with not enough units on the later game.

You use the same currency to buy ammo, fuel and repair kit. Also every time you call for bombing - it also cost 50 $.

Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943

Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943

Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 is the eastern front exclusive, more refined, “other half” of Theatre of War 2 set during the fighting on the Kursk salient shortly after Stalingrad; Players take on the role of either a Red Army commander wishing to thwart Operation Citadel and push towards Berlin or a loyal Wehrmact Panzer Ace hoping to see victory for Germany in light of the loss at Stalingrad and Baku. Compared to Africa, Kursk’s two campaigns are longer than any campaign in A:1943 (at 10 missions each) and more fleshed out from simply attacking, holding, or defending objectives with the use of event triggers to signal retreats, purposeful use of ambushing, the addition of crew morale/cohesion, and tank defenses becoming imperative to survival. Kursk clarifies the foundation put down by A:1943 and improves upon it creating an addictive wargame simulation.

Agree with previous, Steam versions seem better then earlier non steam versions. Not surprising really, all fully patched etc. I am coming (back) to this from Graviteam games, which i have to say are better IMHO but direct comparisons are perhaps unfair as Graviteam are not strict RTS more war simulators. However, i now better understand the trickle down chain of command and fog or war aspects better coming from Graviteam rather than say CoH type games which are very different in feel and gameplay. My inner grognard is enjoying these titles all over again as i try to understand the influence individual soldier’s skill plays in spotting, accuracy, driving and moral etc and the time it takes for commands to reach front line soldiers from commanders not to mention sheer random variables due to act of god or just lack of moral fiber! I say enjoy them for what they are in a suite of similar games and avoid making direct comparisons as they all have plenty of merit. Only criticism i would say is the lack of dynamic campaigns but editors do allow custom or historical scenarios to be designed and shared. Try buy in a sale then you definately won’t piss off your wallet. Enjoy and don’t think about COH, MoW, or even Graviteam.

The levels do not seem to have a reasonable difficulty. The first mission is nearly impossible to complete with the forces given before one of the three bridges explode. However, game has a lot of potential if some UI and balancing fixes are made.

Sudden Strike 4

Sudden Strike 4

Hi all,

I played the original Sudden Strike.

Though only the demo map that was released at that time, what seems now so long ago.. :)

But the title always stuck with me.

I see here allot of die hard fans who give very disapointing reviews and to some point I can definately understand as compared to the original I can remember that the game qua single player was more difficult, bigger (just that demo map was already imense), some units had more options and the missing of the binoculars from the officer seems also a big deal. ^^

I stumbled across Sudden Strike 4 on EA Origin. I didn’t quite know what to make of SS4 at first, but I eventually ended up playing 200 150+34 (so far) hours of the base game there! I finally decided I wanted to own - not just rent - SS4 here on Steam. Just as importantly, I wanted to directly support the developers and get the DLC.

I’ve been gaming since the days of the original Nintendo. This is the first military RTS game I’ve ever owned* and put simply, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played, hands down! It’s readily apparent that an experienced dev team put some real thought and effort into Sudden Strike 4. The graphics and performance are excellent, and the re-playability makes it a superb value for the money. This game is basically a combined-arms tactical combat simulator that uses units up to company size. There are a wide variety of mission types, the complexity of which are further multiplied by the different doctrines available (Infantry, armor and logistical). The well-done AI and relative historical and geographical accuracy are also appreciable.

Graviteam Tactics: Operation Star

Graviteam Tactics: Operation Star

Simply put, the best tactical wargame around, cardboard or PC. It’s not all that difficult to learn, nor is it loaded with tedious micromanagement, so don’t be indimidated thinking this is the land version of Harpoon/Command:MNAO. However, it is time consuming and the slower pace will likely bore those without a serious interest in Eastern Front military history. The manual/tutorials are not very helpful but the UI is really quite simple to pick up with some experimentation. If you’ve played less realistic games like the Wargame series, Combat Mission, or Theatre of War you should feel some familiarity. As far as subject matter, it’s primarily WWII eastern front, but DLC operations are available to expand it into the rarely covered Angolan Civil War as well as a Sino-Soviet border skirmish and a hypothetical Iranian intervention in the Soviet-Afghan War. (unfortunately if you want an actual Soviet-Afghan War scenario, you’ll have to look to GT’s other game, Steel Armor)

I grew up playing games like Close Combat and Combat Mission, but I always felt like those two games could be improved upon. Close Combat, particularly the 2nd and 3rd games in the series, were a great mix of highly tactical combat with campaign systems that allowed your units to fight battles which affected future battles and operations. While the later games went on to have bigger battles and maps, they lost a bit of the magic of the early games where the battles felt much more like struggles and where your past mistakes could lead you to be stuck in situations in Arnhem, or wherever, where you had 4 squads and needed to hold on for a half hour to get a decent cease fire. On the other hand, the Combat Mission series took the war to 3D but kept the extremely complex morale system and tank combat. Yet I never found the series quite as engaging due to a lack of any meaningful campaign system and clunky, abstracted interface and graphics. What I always wanted more was a strategic system like that of the later Close Combat series mixed with 3D graphics, and I think I’ve found that in the Graviteam Tactics series.
