Grand Attrition

Grand Attrition

Okay, I’m not a big review writer but I found this game and thought I’d give it a go.

Things I liked:

Over all this isn’t too bad for a cheap indie game. All of the units (Normal, special, or otherwise) are actually unique with their own functions and purposes, which was rather nice. Map size goes from small to rather absurdly large. Honestly most of the standard stuff is par for the course but the things I really enjoyed are the Side-grades, the forts, the special units, and most importantly, the Talents. The side grades are all just that, sidegrades, they really change up how you can tackle a game and once I figured out that I could do that to the unit spawning buildings it really helped. The forts are these “Structures that contain “loot” that can be very beneficial for the rest of your current run. Then the special units, Some of them are spawnable units that cost a lot of resources but they all do different things aside from just attacking whats ever in front of them. Then you have the non-spawnable units which are also strange and fun to use. Finally the talents, I really love the talents in this game and it’s one of the main reasons I keep playing. They are a ton of fun to use and can really change up how you play a game. Furthermore, none of them feel particularly jarring or like you are supposed to have them. My favorite two are Explosive when touched and conversion blossom. My computer hates it but its great to watch unfold at higher difficulties.

Fun free-form strategy game that doesn’t lock you into one form of playing the game. A good way to pass the time with plenty of features to experiment with. The game has great potential and plenty of room for improvisation and improvement.

You will have to build the base, expand your army and defend the settlement at all costs.

And kill any monster that crosses your path.

But be careful with each passing day the monsters get stronger and more vicious.

Just bought the game and already experiencing bugs. The full screen settings button doesn’t work properly. Also whenever I load into a game the full screen isn’t there. It’s as if part of my game is blacked out on both sides. the blacked out spots cover my game mini map and the Star Base menu to build ships. I do not recommend this game until this bug is fixed. If anybody has a fix for this please let me know.

SpellForce 3: Fallen God

SpellForce 3: Fallen God

TLDR: Overall this was a great pick up and really nails both the RPG and RTS elements to it. The story can be immersive the music is incredible and I can’t wait to try out the other games and the co-op element as well. The puzzles are well thought out and engaging which is really refreshing and unexpected for this type of game.

Background:

I came into Spellforce 3: Fallen God with literally no previous experience from the franchise, I thought this was a new standalone game coming out and the story looked interesting so I picked it up. I would like to clarify this is a Standalone DLC for Spellforce 3. After playing I will be picking up the original and the other standalone DLC as well.

We all know why you are here. Tired of all the mediocre writing in other games? Fallen God contains more of the excellent writing and world building you’ve encountered and loved in Spellforce 3 and Soul Harvest. If you haven’t already: go play those titles first. This series punches well above its weight.

As before there’s equal parts RTS and RPG, but this time with trolls in the main lead. Grimlore succeeds in giving these trolls humanlike emotions. It’s far from savage grumping, although they still crush their enemies with their sticks too. And they crush hard. So what are the differences? There’s some crafting involved (trolls can’t wield human weapons), but it’s really not that pronounced. There’s not that much loot to begin with; Grimlore wisely decided to focus on other gameplay elements. The trolls are certainly sturdier than the human protagonists and consequently the game feels easier, especially in the RTS part. Perhaps this was due to playing Fallen God coop (which works great btw!), because most RTS missions could be accomplished by just rushing the opposing base. Is this a problem? I don’t know. Most importantly, we had fun! But Spellforce veterans might want to push the difficulty slider up a notch. On a technical note: the egregious long loading screens are finally gone!

Before you ask, yes, I played for 107 hours, completed the game yet still do not recommend it. TLDR: it has insane amount of small bugs and unpolishedness for this kind of money and obvious work put into it.

  • Gameplay is fun, hero abilities are fun to use, RTS mode is somewhat lacking (more on that later) but good enough. It has a long thought out compaign (nothing too original, but there rarely is: bad guys, good guys - the usual), hours of voiced dialog, many hero choices for your party, beautiful scenery, various locations.

You are Isamo Tahar’s child. The child of the mage that started the war against the crown of Nortander and that left the lands of Eo devastated. The war is over, your father dead, the queen of Nortander lies in a coma and a mysterious plague, the bloodburn, spreads throughout the country. A new sect, the ‘Purity of Light’ gradually kills all magicians and everyone with magic powers. It’s a complex world Spellforce 3 throws you in, matching the extent of the story.

Spellforce 3 consists of three major elements. The story, the role-playing game, and the real-time strategy game. The story is essential and it’s huge. I spent more than 100 hours in campaign mode to complete it once.

SpellForce 2 - Anniversary Edition

SpellForce 2 - Anniversary Edition

As a fan of the Spellforce universe and the RTS genre, this edition was an easy purchase. After playing the Order of Dawn and the expansions several times; I got interested in the unique gameplay and the world of Eo.

However this game changed the mechanics of the gameplay and the way you play it, for example, you no longer play as a rune warrior in the campaign but instead you’re a Shaikan, possessing dragon blood with similar features to a rune warrior without the power of using the monuments.

After spending 180ish hours beating Spellforce+expansions on hard, I was excited to jump into SF2. This edition contains the core Spellforce 2 and the first expansion (Dragon Wars). Overall, I really like the updates they had made to the game. They worked out a bunch of the issues from the first game (ie. Avatar not attacking, losing units when switching maps, etc.) and made a polished sequel that rivals the first in terms of being enjoyable.

GRAPHICS: 9/10 - The game is from 2006 so again, cannot expect much here. I was pleasantly surprised with the world design and the characters themselves. For those using a newer system, the FOV console command will be your best friend! At the start of each level, you’ll find your FOV pretty limited. Do this: Ctrl + ] to access the console. Type “UI:SetCameraFOV(1.060)” to back the camera out a bit. The higher the number, the further out you go.

Actually I am sitting on the fence a bit with this new Spellforce game. I’ve clocked a number of hours but haven’t got a long way through as yet. But I’ll give it a thumbs up merely because I think it will end up ok - vastly different to the number of thumbs down reviews here from people who have spent little time in the game and their issues sound more like technical or other problems rather then an actual “review” of the game itself.

Sure, it’s got a few bugs, but I haven’t seen a game release in ages that didn’t have bugs first up - sometimes badly affecting even being able to play. It does have some other developer issues like the stealth mission in the Stepping Stones “My god what were they thinking!”. This kind of mission doesn’t suit this type of top down rpg/rts at all. And there are bugs where if you skip missions, do things in the wrong order or something, some weird things show up. But like all other games, the dev’s do hear about these issues and I’m sure there’s patches coming.

SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest

SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest

8 out of 10 for a RPG-RTS game

6 out of 10 for a SpellForce game

You can get it for 15-25 €/$? Get it at the spot! The content-price value is perfect for what you get. 20h+ campaign with good mechanics. Sadly after the campaign there is currently only MP-PVP. What makes the game very limited for PVE players in the end-game.

The story is acceptable for a stand-alone game but a huge disaster as a series entry because of a story on fan fiction level. The ending is one of the worst thing that I have ever experienced. Really shame since the rest of the campaign was quite enjoyable. Declare this a spin-off or alternative timeline and you won’t have issues with the story errors if you have played the other titles of the series.

I must say, for me, Spellforce 3 Soul Harvest is so far the greatest game of the year.

‘Wait what? What is so good in this game?’ - You might ask.

Well, my answer depends on whether you have played the original title or not.

IF YOU ARE A NEW PLAYER

In short, Spellforce 3 Soul Harvest is a story-rich roleplaying game with strategic elements. (Well, technically a standalone game expansion of SF3, but a complete solo game nevertheless). It mixes RPG and RTS in an unique and enjoyable way no other game does. (Truly, there is no other such games I know)

Battle Mages: Sign of Darkness

A pretty well made sequel to a great game.

I played both as a kid .. I spent many many hours into them before they were on steam.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The tutorial is still kinda lacking. It’s just a tad bit better than the first Battle Mages' .To summarize, you must preserve your units as best you can.Stack up gold, aquire artefacts from dens and kill all the monsters to get exp for your character and your units.Complete all side quests to make it easier for yourself further into the campaigns. You’ll need all the exp and gold you can get!

The game is old and it’s noticeable via the graphics, but it runs smooth and it doesn’t hurt the game play. I can’t tell about the other languages, but at some parts English voice overs were not so good. Despite all this I do like the game. It’s something different and the story kept me interested. The characters are interesting and the game has a lot of diversity.
