Mad Father

Mad Father

I got hooked on these games in high school after playing IB. I’ve always enjoyed Mad Father, such a beautiful art style. (✿ ♥‿♥)

In this wonderful and lavish house, what could go wrong? You play as absolutely adorable 11 year old, Aya. She wakes up at night and hears her father scream in terror. Instead of calling 911 or attempting to escape, she instead goes to investigate the basement where he is always working.

It’s a cute but spook spook puzzle game. It’s not going to give you nightmares but the atmosphere is incredibly chilling. I found myself questioning humanity after this.

Loved this game when I first played it in 2012. Glad to see it finally got a spot on steam.

This game was incredible. I have always harbored a love for rpg maker games and CTB takes me right back to the early days of Ib and Mad Father. There is an abundance of things I enjoyed with this game, so for clarity sake, I’ll bullet them below:

  • Artwork: The in game sprites fit the surrounding area. No colors break the scenes palette and are to scale (which can be a lot to ask with some games like this). The original artwork and character dialogue plates present a style that is both familiar and unique, something smooth to look at put against the harsh nature of the haunted manor. I adored the different cycles of expressions our MC can go through, their eyes in particular were adept at conveying the horror of her situation.

The atmosphere is really effective, you feel claustrophobic even in the open areas, I was alert the whole time.

The art and music (specially the music) highly complement the experience.

I liked the puzzles too, nothing was unnecessarily complicated :)

I got the characters mixed up all the time and I’ll have to replay it to get the full story but that’s on me.

The story was short, and very nice.

Best I could expect from 2D graphics, all this dev’s games have the same style.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out what you’re supposed to do, but nothing a bit of spamming the interact button can’t fix.

Lots and lots of dead animals.

Very good game for three dollars.

This is more of a neutral review.

Interesting game, seems like it has some good ideas and promise, though I personally found it difficult to keep track of all the details of what was going on. Like I got a vague idea of the story… Apparently there are 3 endings but I’m not motivated enough to check them out.

Listen, if you play this game. Play it for an hour or two, and stop. Just stop. The game starts uniquely frightening–despite the exaggerated loud noises everywhere–I’ll give them that they have excellent disturbing imagery and characters you would see in your nightmares.

Beyond that, I absolutely hate the story, yet I know nothing about it. I played this game fully, read aloud all of the dialogue–despite the frequent misspellings and “it is damn”. But I can’t figure out what happened in this story. And if I wanted to go back and try to figure it out, I can’t. Why? Because one of the three endings I got cleared my saves. All of them. Correction, if I load the one save it has left for me, it’s the credits. You will beg for the credits the entire last hour of the game hoping “oh god, is it over yet?” I just don’t know what this story is. Outside the horror elements, it reminds me of a fantasy a 13 year old would write after playing Silent Hill and watching the Matrix.

Hedera

THIS IS THE SCARIEST GAME I EVER PLAYED, I LOVE IT. Its so weird, I don’t understand what the heck is going on and the jump scares are so unexpected, I hit my head on my dresser cause I got so scared. I’m just so confused and I love the game, I recommend you to play it.

Real player with 34.0 hrs in game

Hedera is a game of inconsistency, but of quality that far far FAR supercedes its issues. It is tonally inconsistent with moments of gameplay that toe the line between appropriately confusing and too hard for its own good, however the pure nightmare atmosphere and visceral terror more than make up for this. For what it is, it is executed excellently, not flawlessly. Its a game made by a single developer, a single storyteller, on person did it. I left the game feeling as though i witnessed the skin and bones of a true masterpiece of horror, one that is simply outside of the scope of a single developer, and as such its important to judge the game on merit of what it is and not what it could be with a triple A studio. Or, any studio.

Corpse Party

Corpse Party

It has finally arrived… The long awaited Corpse Party for PC is now here on Steam!

Note!

Please keep in mind that this is not the PSP version.

Another note:

Also keep in mind that Corpse Party is not for the faint-hearted. If you’re not a big fan of horror games then I don’t suggest getting it.

I’ve been a fan of Corpse Party for a while, and seeing this on Steam only brings me more nostalgia ever since I’ve seen Corpse Party for the first time. Even though it’s not as spectacular as the PSP version in my opinion (which came out after this was made by the way), it still brings out quite the experience and will still give you shivers down your spine.

Took Your Little Sister to the Toilet, So No Truth Ending? LMAO

Corpse party was initially made very famous by pewdiepie in the gaming world, but it primarily had a fan base for the anime and manga. I am pretty late in coming to the fandom or to the franchise in general this is probably why i am not too much hyped up about it but I still managed to play the chapters more than twice to fully explore it. At first from the first chapter I was super bored as hell, I thought it was cheap, nothing interesting and it felt like I played same scenario before. But the game proved me wrong with it’s plot twister storylines, amazing character backgrounds and development and numerous endings.

Play Mad Father first!

This game ties in quite a bit to Mad Father, so I highly suggest going and playing that first or you’ll miss a lot of things that are fun to find and connect. Did you play it? Ok now that you’re back we can continue. This game is a step up from Mad father in some ways and a step down in others. The main game’s art and animation are better, but for this they did seem to sacrifice the 2D character art such as when they speak. The individual dialog art and the rest of the 2D art during story sequences seemed a lot more detailed and of better quality in Mad Father. However I believe it’s worth it for the upgrade in the rest of the game’s animation and general art. Mad father had many harder parts and was scarier. This game is much more psychological in the fear factor. Which made it easier to solve things. Your choices have consequences and oh boy does it LOVE to punish you for them! It is so punishing, After playing this if you’re one of those people that seldom saves during a game or simply forgets to save, you will be hard pressed to try to not save any game again. I can’t remember a game that has so many constant implanted ways to die as this does.

! Like that damn phone.. kept forgetting that stupid thing was there.. It also has an interesting dynamic for the main umm.. character(s?). It goes all Pokemon on you with being a boy or a girl which you should fully play through both to get the full story. It’s also interesting how the biggest mystery in the game is the main character even after you finish it. It took me 8 hours to 100% this game with achievements!

Misao is a semi-old school Horror RPG with thriller elements and tense situations. If you want the basic plot, you play as a high school student who you can choose both the name and gender of. (Although, their canon name is supposedly Aki, there is no canon gender!)

The game follows Aki as they are wondering about what happened to a girl named Misao, who went missing 3 months ago. After getting ready and going to school, he/she overhears some students talking about some weird things going on in the school dubbed “Misao’s curse” by the students. After that, an anomalous event happens and you are found within the horror filled world of evil spirits and plentiful deaths that you know as Misao.

I normally don’t leave reviews, but I just finished making a let’s play of this game, and I enjoyed it so much I had to leave a like. Nice Job DrakeCraft! The game can be both funny and suspenseful and creepy and is just an enjoyable treat. 7/5 pineapples!

alone’s a sweet one with a nice pacing & concept.

however it’s really short in length, which is kinda sad. would’ve loved to play more of it.

still, a solid indie game that was not lacking in overall quality.

just that kevin macleod song I’ve heared too much in my life kinda disrupted my immersion, complete silence would’ve been more fitting in my opinion.

Fausts Alptraum

Fausts Alptraum

I don’t even know where to start.

I super enjoyed this game from the start to the end.

The characters, the graphics, the sountrack, the story, the designs, the art…

Absolutely everything is amazing from this game.

I just want more from this universe.

Edit, 07/14/2020:

I revisited this game.

It doesn’t fails in draggin you in quickly. I’m truly amazed by the story it tells, it really sticks with you. Gosh I really want to praise it non-stop.

You feel this connection with the characters, even though you’ve never seen them, you feel like they really were here once, like they still are.

Real player with 39.8 hrs in game

What first attracted me to Fausts Alptraum was the visually appealing crayon world full of bright colour that immediately reminded me of Laika’s motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. The cut-scenes reminiscent of a dark world that would look at home in a Tim Burton screenplay.

The gameplay graphics are the normal RPGmaker yet they still evoke a creepy mystery by adding subtle changes within the rooms as different actions are completed leaving an eerie haunted feeling early on in the game.
