Swords & Souls: Neverseen

Swords & Souls: Neverseen

So this was a flash game before it became a actual game on steam. Originally just swords and souls, I waited like…say 4 years to play this game. And I sure as heck wasn’t disappointed.

Pros:

Graphics are eye-candy, perfect fantasy pop, or whatever you wanna describe it as.

Humor, had me chuckle a few times, however I will say in order to get most of them you had to of played the games they made before. So…you might wanna do that.

Combat, you auto attack and so do your companions, however you’re able to do skills and block or dodge attacks, sometimes in order to avoid a hit you need to dodge, blocking does nothing, etc. Think rock, paper, scissors, but with club, sword, magic. You can also choose different weapon types, changing the skill you get with it. Want a spear? Sure, you attack right away with the special ability, and weaken the hit opponent for two turns, however you don’t deal as much damage as say the great sword. And if you want the great sword you have a sweep fit for a group of enemies, however you loose the shield, thus taking more damage.

I’ve played this game a bit (I know steam says some stupid number of hours, but I left it open while I was doing a bunch of other stuff because of the passive income), and it’s been extremely fun.

The rough gist is that you enter combats, earn money from those combats until you can’t win anymore, then play minigames to increase your skills, and you buy better equipment so you can win more combats. It sounds really simple, and it is, but good fucking god is it fun.

There are 5 stats - melee, ranged, soulcery, defense, and agility. Each of them has a unique minigame.

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story™

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story™

(Review after 3 hours)

This game is an interesting mix of a lot of different types of games.

  • Turn-based combat: Think Banner Saga, Slay the Spire, Darkest Dungeon or Into the Breach. Into the Breach is probably the closest comparison as the combat mechanics involve quite a few different buffs/debuffs/combo potential. Slay the Spire is pretty close but without the roguelite element of constructing/tuning your deck.

  • RPG: There are main quests, optional side quests, a sandbox-like open world where you can loot random chests for a few gold and crafting materials. The gear/equipment system is deeper than expected. You can improve your characters' gear through fight rewards, purchasing it from vendors or upgrading what you have. Upgrading comes in two flavors, the typical upgrade all the stats as well as an “enchantment” system allowing you to augment gear with specific stats.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

TLDR: If you are a fan of turn-based RPGs, especially those from the golden age of PSX/PS2, this is right up your alley. The polish is top-notch and there are very few games made like this nowadays. This is certainly worth your time and money.

Originally I planned to write this after I poured a few more hours into the game, but given the price for the summer sale I wanted to get this out for people who might be wondering if they should buy it. In short, please do.

Games like Battle Chasers: Nightwar are rare these days, a game so supremely polished, addicting, and engrossing that it’s hard to put down. This game is a straight up love letter to folks like myself, the late twenties/early thirties crowd who grew up playing some of the PSX era giants. I’m not just talking about the Final Fantasy games, but some of the lesser known gems like Lunar, Thousand Arms, Grandia, and Vandal Hearts. Nothing against the JRPG titles in the genre (I have played many) but it’s also really cool to see something with this sort of vibrant “western” art style that just pops out of the screen like the comic book off which it’s based. It really is a joy to look at and it never gets old watching the animations on screen.

“Compelling comic Turn-based RPG throwback with fresh mechanics and experience”

This analysis is based on latest version which tweaks some issues. So you might expect different criticism from early review or if you’re uncomfortable with the length, you can skip to other brief review.

Presentation

BC: Nightwar is turn-based RPG game from Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Developed by Airship Syndicate using Unity engine. The game represents world of ’90 Joe Madureira’s comic with refreshed JRPG turn-based combat and interesting features. The design is diverse from the comic dialogue and 2D multi-layered world map, shifted into isometric view in dungeon and fully-animated turn based section. It’s subjective design if you enjoy arcanepunk, but well-polished production.

I used to love this game. but the latest update has ruined it for me. everything is still good until you touch the relic in the Nashville cave. I have now been stuck in the maelstrom for over an hour, there is no goal, no point to head for, you simply run inside the maelstrom going nowhere, and its pretty much game over. Once you have encountered the 2 groups in the mist, you should be returned to the cave no more than a minute later. Until this is fixed the game is dead as far as i am concerned, and i am actively advising my friends that have played encased to not return to the game.

extremely good game concept, first 20ish hours were some of the best RPG ive played so far this decade then after act 1 it just falls flat. pure lack of content from there on. never in my life have i played an RPG with so few quests. Of the 5 major factions they each get 1 settlement and a single chain of 3 main quests. sometimes side quests have you go to a different faction settlement to complete it, but thats about it.

the worst aspect is the loot. from the lazy items themselves to the loot chances to horrible merchant mechanics it had me tearing my hair the whole time. here is the defining story of my one single run of this game.

Vagrus - The Riven Realms: Prologue

Vagrus - The Riven Realms: Prologue

When I read some of the negative reviews about Vagrus on the store page for the full game, I was hesitant about buying it and so I decided to try out this demo. One thing I’ve gotta say is that you HAVE to be in the mood for reading if you want to fully experience and enjoy this game. The first time I launched, I was not in that mood, and boy, I was really having my doubts. After getting bored during the first few dialogues, I decided to put it down and try again another day. Second time launching, I got ready to embrace the adventure ahead of me, no distractions, and it was FANTASTIC!

KENSHI in heavy text mode and turn by turn battles?

A book where you are the hero/leader as a video-game?

Conclusion in comments!

Demo offers 2 game modes:

-A tutorial campaign titled “Pilgrims of the Wasteland” which is in fact the first part of a story-driven campaign.

I completed it in 3 hours or so, taking my time to read tutorial hints and lore texts.

-5 turns in a free campaign, open-world setting.

I didn’t try it, 5 turns (days) seems too low for me to enjoy, also the tutorial has been enough of a test for me, i’m hooked.

Tiny Heroes 2

Tiny Heroes 2

On the scale of Yuck to Feast, I’d rate this one a “Gruel”

There’s enough stupid-grindy nutrition to survive on here, but after giving it a solid effort, I’d say it’s comprehensively unsatisfying.

Disclaimer - I like these stupid games on the PC instead of my phone for some time-wasting (yeah yeah, Steam community generally hates them), and I’m still hoping Steam will provide a fresh one worth digging into (e.g. Onmyoji, Rot3K (RIP), Forge of Gods (RIP)). I generally don’t care if it’s P2W, and am more interested in whether it’s fun and/or semi-competitive to play for free or on a budget.

Second Edit:

It gets kinda tiring if you are down for hardcore get things done.

But if you are just there bypass time. 10 mins a day, this is a game for you.

never think of making it a game of the day for you. no this is an idler game. only worth 10 mins or less daily for you. or even play it every two days.

Then this game will last awhile for you. I mean a few weeks till you get bored of that dungeon you never clear, even you have all the potions with you, but gears are just very grindy to get unless you spend tons of diamonds to get #pay to win.

Anti-Science Brigade

Anti-Science Brigade

It is amusing to be reviewing a game about fallacies and forcing false dichotomies and not being able to give a review score more nuanced than “recommended” or “not recommended”.

This is likely obvious, but if the theme doesn’t appeal to you, don’t bother. The combat mechanics are simple, there are (fairly minor) UI frustrations sprinkled throughout, and character pathfinding is hit-and-miss. I also unfortunately can’t say this is an easily picked up title for those unfamiliar with RPGs/games in general, because tutorials are sparse and menus are a bit fiddly, so it helps to be quite familiar with the genre and therefore what to look for and how you might generally expect things to work.
