Elderine: Dreams to Destiny

So I’ve had my eye on this game for coming on a year from when it hit greenlight, and now its finally here whoop.

The game has alot to offer from puzzles to rogue like, personallity traits to dungeon crawling and even a survival element.

Its still within very early stages of development having said that it has massive potential im enjoying the first parts of the game and more is to come from the dev as time goes on.

Definitely one to watch!!

Great game in theory, but in reality it’s a buggy mess. The game crashes repeatedly (in fact it crashes so hard it takes Steam with it) and there’s no way to save your progress other than sleeping, which advances to the next day, obviously. Thankfully when you sleep it’s an autosave, so while you’ll lose progress when the game inevitably crashes every hour or two IRL it’s not too much progress. I’d still call this a game-breaking bug though and the developer doesn’t care at all. I went on the forums to report the bug, found a thread where the developer had responded basically saying “oh sorry about that, just use a different PC” and posted in there asking why it was happening and saying that I DON’T HAVE ANOTHER PC because I’m not made of money and the developer responded by regurgitating the same “fix”: “just use a different PC” that I don’t have, which I DID mention.

I like to play my games on easy mode… I’ll leave you stewing with that for now.

Jumping into it - the first thing to say is that it was addictive. The pull of the game has caught me a few times. Every time I’ve invested a half hour into the game I’ve found myself lost in it for 2-4 times that.

There is nothing wrong with the desire to play more. In normal cases wanting more is a good sign that the game has you riveted. But being at the edge of your seat is not the whole story here.

I like the story of the game to flow nicely so that my experience is filled and void of any boring bits. The experience does not need to be dependent on words to be properly conveyed. Discovering game mechanics, honing the efficiency of a system, or solving a string of puzzles can all be - what I see - as story. And here is where I see two stories clashing.

Wild Season

Wild Season

Played the game enough to get to the end of the first episode, the devs have their priorities way out of order, coupled with the fact that they clearly bit off more than they could chew, and you have Wild Season. The game we’ve all been waiting for. I found myself waking up, watering plants, then going to sleep until the next day, rinse and repeat. There’s really nothing else to it than that, sure you can go mining (the levels on the mine repeat themselves occasionally, including all the crap you left on the floor) but you cant use the ores to make anything like in HM games, you just sell them for next to nothing, better off spending money farming. Animals are broken, you can buy a chicken, and yes it will eventually lay eggs after it’s happy, but you can’t incubate the eggs, they disappear the next day, so if you want multiple chickens you have to keep buying more, which is against the point to begin with, you would never see your money back from that.

| Disclaimer: A key was provided for me to beta test the game and write an honest review |

[/olist]

I would like to apologize for my previous review, to those who aren’t satisfied with it and to those who doesn’t agree to what I wrote. After spending more time with this game, and figuring out a few stuffs, including how the save system works I’ve decided to revise my review, and hopefully this will correct my previous mistakes.

  • Plot – The story starts slow, it does take time before you see how it unfolds. The first part is quite too long for an introduction, you’ll be reading many dialogue lines before you could get your hands on the game and start playing. You can see notification on the right that you have completed a quest, but there is no actual UI that shows what your quest was or what your current one is. But there is a journal that shows your progress instead. So far as I’ve noticed, there is an event or happening at least once each day. So other than taking care of your farm, you’ll have something to look forward to the next day.

It’s good so far.

Updated for ‘Hag & Slash’ Update

Fair Warning:: There are dark themes, and some mature references in this game.

Pros:

Extremely Ambitious game:

Kynseed is a LIFE SIM, not just a farming sim. the goal of this game is to give the player options to specialize in any available niches of the character’s life if the player wants to, with each being in-depth in their own stepping stones. This includes farming, business owning, combat, domestic life, animal breeding, crafting, player-character/spouse/worker/offspring skill and stat improving for even better experiences in those areas, etc. They’re implementing a lot of in-depth and unique features for each (check their roadmap in the official site, and the Discord.)

I’ve put a lot of hours into this game (especially for being an early access title), so it’s pretty apparent that I would recommend it.

I’ve read through some negative reviews and I can see where they’re coming from with some things, but I think it’s entirely accurate to say that Kynseed is worth the price. If you’re wondering whether you can get $10 worth of content, I’d say yes! The game’s value will increase with time, so I think it’s worthwhile to get it while it is so cheap- and you’ll have the added advantage of already having progressed through some major early events and having hoarded resources.

Put on a bikini top and went outside and everyone found it offensive!

At one time i got bored and i was like fakku with the clothes and went on outside with the bikini top on a hot day and everyone was like uhhhh looks like you got wrong side of the bed today! man that was funny in the game! the game surprises you with so many bits at unexpected times.

Now to the overall review: first of all i’d like to say that I have not played stardew valley, I heard its quite simillar to this so i cannot do a comparision. But with the time i had with the game it was pretty amazing and enjoyable. It’s very casual but you are under the clock so it’s half time management and half farming simulator. The story is about you who come from nowhere with a cute doggie, a man named paxel (a very harsh NPC). He brings you to a very beautiful village for a new start. The village has a rough history where there’s no rain and no crops can grow, with the power of appeasing the guardian deities of the village, it’s your job to restore the village and bring back the villages who left.

Now that I have completed the first year of this game and effectively achieved the “ending”, I feel as though I’m qualified enough to write a comprehensive review. So, I’ll start with the pros and cons.

Pros:

⚘ Cute, homey pixel art befitting of a down-to-Earth farming game such as this one. Dynamic and detailed scenery that changes based on season and time of day.

⚘ Plenty of diverse characters to make the town feel alive.

⚘ Many upgrades and secrets to be had in this game. House, barn, and tool upgrades to make your life a lot easier. Secrets that can enhance your experience and provide you with new information about the world.

FAIR WARNING!

Please keep in mind it’s an Early Access version of the game. If you search for an full-of-feature, near final version, I would highly recommend to wait until the game was in an further development stage. There could be bugs, crashes (I have never one single crash!), lack of content and items and things like that ! So please, push the Buy button only if you want to support the game, the idea and the developers, not to expect an highly final gameplay experience!

Last but not least: Sorry for my bad english, it’s not my native language! I try to improve, but it will take time to be good :D !

After waiting a year and through many broken promises for an update this game has taken a huge step back. Literally everything about this game is worse now. Definitely not worth buying in this state.

Update June 26, 2020: After giving this game one last chance with “Major Update Version 1.0” it’s abundantly clear it will likely never reach any potential it may once have had. To say it’s broken would be an understatement. Progression is virtually impossible. Stone cannot be gathered or mined in any way. No quests other than the first quest of meet the campers will complete. Trading does not work. The flashlight is a small circle of light always focused on the ground in front of the player’s feet so the light doesn’t follow where you are looking. There’s nothing aside from twine or rope to craft, build, or do as the most fundamental aspects of the game are non-functioning and as such you cannot acquire the necessary resources through any means whether that be gathering, trading, or completing quests. And this is after nearly three years since game release.

Really good game and addicting, it has great potential and is a great blend of surviving, strategy and RPG.

Unfortunately it’s too bugged at the alpha state. Check it later.

Updated at Jan 20th:

The devs are not responsive to our feedbacks, and keep playing other games and ignoring us. Change to not recommended for now, and may possibly edit some time.

Updated at May 27th:

The dev brothers decided to set aside some time to develop it. At Alpha 3 hotfix 9 it’s highly playable now, also they are planning to deploy Unity 5 in the Alpha 4 to avoid massive bugs. I’m also doing some Chinese localization voluntarily, which they MAY adapt it one day.

Real player with 87.8 hrs in game

At it’s core, FreeHolder is a cheap-ish variation (maybe even clone) of a game from Clarus Victoria . It plays very similarily to Predynastic Egypt except latter actually has decent quality and way more content. And it had a full release just few months after this game came to EA.

Freeholder is just painful. It gives you VERY limited options. You have, like, 7-9 action points per turn. Most actions are absolutely random and it is not uncommon to have three in a row to fail completely. If those actions are food gathering you most likely are screwed, since you CANNOT STORE FOOD AS IT SPOILS AT LUDICROUS RATE. And then you start anew. And you reload since MOST OF THE TOWN QUESTS ARE SUPPLYING LUDICROUS AMOUNTS OF FOOD WHICH SPOILS AT LUDICROUS RATE AND YOU CAN MOVE ONLY 5 UNITS PER TURN. And you do all of this with horrible, half-completed UI in a game full of bugs. It goes like this - even if you are doing fine at the beginning, starting disadvantages like this start snowballing and wreck you late in game. EVEN if you are doing well, and usually you aren’t. I played for, like, 15 hours and during this time I survived more than a year only once…

Gleaner Heights

Gleaner Heights

Don’t mistake this for Stardew Valley

Well, it needed to be said. Gleaner Heights is a farming-rpg that does share a few common elements with Stardew Valley and other games inspired by Harvest Moon. But it has an unique style, charm and in short is a game you really want to experience. It isn’t without its flaws, but the developer keeps an ear to the community and has expressed a desire to keep working on the game. Even as is, it is a damn good game, well worth the asking price. That’s the short of things.

Real player with 76.6 hrs in game

This review will not be short, but I’ll preface it with the colloquial ‘short of it’. This game is mostly a positive experience, with a couple solid, avoidable gripes- and one which I’d say needs to be fixed on principle.

Gleaner Heights is a farming sim that, at least in my experience, lies just outside the expected norms of it’s genre- this is not a bad thing. In an extremely short forty hours it has forced me to confront particular habits and reliances that have embedded themself into my psyche, and to bash them against the rocks until they’ve cracked wide open, allowing me access to the tender meat within. It’s been an admittedly love-hate relationship, as a consequence of how it’s made me rethink what it is I value in the games I play, and reminded me why I started to love this genre in the first place.
