Pecaminosa - A Pixel Noir Game

Pecaminosa - A Pixel Noir Game

Do you get value out of the price you pay? Yes and catching it in during a sale is a no brainer to add to your collection. There aren’t many noire themed games after all.

The presentation and the vision for this game is up there. As a backer for this game, I feel satisfied with what the team delivered. You can feel the effort and passion that this small indie team poured into this project.

  • Visuals are really good, except for the character portraits present in the dialogue boxes as those could have been touched on a little bit more.

After following this game’s progress for quite a while and now being able to play it and finish it already

TWICE I can happily say that I had a very fun experience and it was worth the wait

Pecaminosa gives you what they told you were going to have: rich story, Immersive ambient, amazing soundtrack, fun boss battles and some dried humour… which was very welcome. Being able to play as an old detective trying to fix his past mistakes while living in a hopeless city where drugs, sex, violence happens from day to night. Managing to find a little bit of hope just for it to be taken away from you… and still moving on was quite interesting. This game truly shows

Black Closet

Black Closet

Are you good enough to get into a prestigious college?

Well, you better hope you are, because that’s your ultimate goal as Black Closet’s main character Elsa Jackson. Actually achieving that goal requires a successful term as president of your school’s student council, and achieving that goal requires putting the lid on several potential scandals without damaging your own credibility too badly. Let me tell you, there are a lot of potential scandals, and other forces at work may end up making your life more difficult. But first you need to identify and neutralize the traitor within your ranks…

Black Closet is one of my favorite games. The characters are interesting and sometimes complex, the story is entertaining and contains some interesting branches, and the gameplay is a really fun application of resource management to solve mysteries.

Elsa, the player character, is the president of the student council and must strategically deploy her “minions” (the other student council members) to resolve various crises so that their fancy private school remains respected while also trying not to ruin the student council’s reputation with the rest of the student body. These crises vary from mundane (the daughter of someone important might be failing a class) to serious (a student has gone missing). You need to assign the right minion for various investigative tasks that match their personal skills (for example, you don’t want to send the nice friendly girl to yell at a culprit or send the introvert to gather info via a friendly chat with a suspect) while also balancing your minions' needs because they will be temporarily unavailable if their workload causes too much stress. The cases are randomized, so this is great for replayability!

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

It is not a game, it is an experience. A very special one and totally unique. And it can be the best one you had in a lifetime of gaming.

I have finally reached a THOUSAND HOURS playing this game. So I guess it is time to review it. Every viable choice and path, probably saw all the dialogues, I dare to say. I really did everything possible, researched all the alternatives, even explored the most grim and absurd outcomes, just to see how far your freedom goes. I did it all. And it really gives you the most absurd amount of choices and risks to take. All the perfect choices, all the wrong ones on purpose. And usually, there is no wrong path to take. What kind of cop do you want to be?

SUGGESTION [Moderate: Success?] — “The first time I played this game, it filled me with a sense of nostalgia, which is weird because it was my first time playing the game. The music, the art style, the amnesiac protagonist, all contribute to that feeling… which has now turned into real nostalgia.

A few times, I’ve remembered the theme of the city proper, and had literal tears well up in my eyes, and loved every second of it. That feeling has made me come back to the game three or four separate times now, to try new skillsets, thoughts, and world views. The Final Cut update makes this process even better, as the writing and voice acting are really fucking good; even uncovering tiny new bits of writing triggers substantial dopamine hits in my brain at this point.

Disjunction

Disjunction

I’m thoroughly enjoying my experience with Disjunction. You play as three separate characters whose storylines intertwine and run parallel to one another. Despite being advertised as a stealth-RPG, the game gives you a plethora of options to customize your gameplay. You can play non-lethally with melee, lethally with different guns, or use a combination of both. Your choice in lethality affects the dialogue, characters, and endings. The game can also be quite challenging depending on your playstyle.

Hmm… I don’t know if recommended is really what I should place this game under.

But it’s not bad and it’s cheap !

This game is quite weird because the story is very mature, It can also be quite bloody if you go full rampage…

The music is awesome and could be described as some kind of dark ambient, the pixel art graphics are fantastic though repetitive.

But the gameplay is childish… The game consist of small levels divided in two floors each time with a save point located on each floor which you can use at any point but you can use it only once… The game would be perfect for a kid to learn how to handle stealth games, it is a very good introduction to the stealth genre.

Sherlock Holmes - Nemesis

Sherlock Holmes - Nemesis

Ah, “Holmes: Nemesis”. In fact, who the heck is Arsene Lupin? Isn’t Moriarty usually Holmes' nemesis? Ah, well.

This game is different from all other Holmes games, in that you know who the culprit is, you just need to catch him.

As such, you pretty much spend your time playing his wretched ‘game’ of cat-and-mouse, where Lupin deliberately leaves clues to his next hit, and you have to follow along.

Like “Holmes: Awakened”, you get standard features like Holmes Vision and Teleportation, which are very handy in the game. But, unlike other games, this game involves a lot of mathematical work. AUUUGH. Maths.

TL;DR: If you like Sherlock Holmes, detective games or even point-and-click adventures, stay away. If you enjoy extreme (digital) legwork, pixel hunting and math, have a ball.

I can see that this game (AKA “Sherlock Holmes Versus Arsène Lupin”) was made with some degree of care. Voice acting is good; dialogue is well written and with great sense of humour; I also loved the

! works of art in the

! National Gallery and the radically different comments about them by Holmes and Lestrade.

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

This game surprised me, and got me into the Frogwares Sherlock Holmes games. I originally played it on Xbox 360 as a rental when it released, the Title caught my interest. Turned out to be a game I loved so much I bought it again on Steam. The PC version is far superior with the exception of the following, but don’t let it sway you away, it can be corrected. It’s not a broken game any means, just needs help on newer hardware when you first install. Some users (like myself) have an issue with the game mot loading initially: for most people this can be easily corrected by opening the game’s folder (“C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper\Support\PhysX”) and re-installing the two PhysX installers, and selecting the repair option if asked to by the installer for each one.

CATS MEAT

Beep beep! Yeah, it’s kebabs for cats, okay? Ambiguous meat aside, this one’s really great, possibly my favourite game in Frogwares' SH series. The story is intricate and smart, and it pays off the Jack the Ripper lore in a really satisfying way, 10/10. The characters are surprisingly more human than usual, though there’s no Toby, so also 0/10. It’s got pretty much everything else though – the gruesome, the macabre, pretentious poetic interludes, ridiculously cartoony chalk drawings you have to investigate with a magnifying glass for some reason, Watson being too embarrassed to talk about sex workers, MS paint (but on pigs’ heads), and a coordinated swarm of cats!

Unheard

Unheard

Just completed the game after 8 hours, and I honestly am happy with the price/hours paid ratio. Each of those 8 hours entranced me in a way most games don’t. There’s no mindlessness in this game. It’s pure audio puzzle and is definitely it’s own genre.

Quick pros: Easy to play. Captivating. Not demanding on your computer. Original concept. And probably more I can’t think of.

Quick cons: Sometimes voice acting needs work but it doesn’t hurt the experience much. Micro stutter sometimes in the audio. Dunno what caused it. Wish the end of the audio didn’t force you to restart at the beginning. Would like to rewind like any other time.

Lockheart Indigo

Lockheart Indigo

Lockheart Indigo was a short but fulfilling experience, with all of its parts forming a cohesive whole. The art, the music, the characters and the gameplay all fit together seamlessly to tell an exciting story.

It offers a unique system where, instead of battling your enemies in combat, you have to win them over with clever persuasion. And it’s clear the developer took a lot of time in crafting the various responses to show each character’s unique personality and motives.

I definitely recommend this game, it was a joy to play and a great homage to the Game Boy era from which it took its inspiration.

Real player with 5.8 hrs in game

About 2-3 hour long detective game where the combat is replaced with interrogation, it’s kinda like playing Undertale and only using the dialogue choices (no bullet-hell though). Whenever you need to get information from the character you have to find a way to probe them by using evidence and their motivations against them. The story was decent enough for me to finish the game, but I was a bit disappointed with the illusion of choices as the game is pretty linear overall. You can use F4 to set the game to fullscreen, however, it does not have a widescreen so you will be playing with black borders. Even though the game is relatively polished and resistant to stupid choices, there are some potential softlocks due to the enemy AI, you should keep 2-3 save slots 30 minutes apart just in case (I wasted like 40 minutes because one of the quest items became inaccessible).
