Red Bit Ninja

–-Update—

6/11/2015

Cards are finally enabled for this game and there are 8 [out of 15 for the badge] of them to collect. I’ve played the game and did not enjoy it. Now I can leave the game open to get the 8 card drops.

–-Update—

Steam store page lists Steam Trading Cards. No card drops after 8 hours. Something is obviously broken or the game was published claiming to have a feature it clearly doesn’t

A lot of the previous reviewers' gripes have been addressed. The windowed mode thing and the tutorial thing. My xbox 360 controller works fine with the game.

Unfortunately that leaves me to gripe about the actual gameplay. Not feeling it. Sorry, but it’s floaty garbage. It is what I imagine homemade soap would be like if you never made soap before. Not really enjoyable.

TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity

TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity

Very good daily run roguelite tower climber. The lack of a primary attack and reliance on a single slow-recharge bomb makes the entire thing feel a lot more like a danmaku game than a platformer. Characters are pretty diverse and have completely different styles of bomb attack which leads to needing to play them in completely different ways. Using the foxgirl you need to hold back and allow the missiles to home, while the maid boy (cute) needs to get very close and whack into enemies. Powerups being random and tied to player corpses makes each run feel just unique enough to make you change up your playstyle, but the powerups are weak enough that succeeding in a run still feels like a test of skill instead of luck.

even though it’s in early access game you can still enjoy what the game offers! the gameplay is very fun even without a “normal attack” as you journey through the tower you learn you use your skill better and find better items to assist you.

the graphics are amazing and the pixel art style just has a unique charm that just makes everything so cute! the game reminds me of older arcade games I used to play

the game easily worth $10 and can offer tons of fun.

the social features are very fun and I hope that they get expanded on more!

The game came out of early access and received good support.

One of the best platformers around and a game that deserves to be in every gamer’s library. Highly recommended!

Taivas

Taivas

Lucky me gets to write the first review of Taivas, and it’s a dubious honour.

Taivas is an abandoned Early Access 2D retro pixel platformer/asset flip. It was created by flipping assets and a 2D platformer template from the godawful IFAction game construction kit. No professional effort was made in terms of game development, copying a template/using a game construction kit requires no talent, and unsurprisingly produces products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers.

TSK was a damn amazing game and I 100% recommend it to anyone who likes puzzles, dark

atmospheres.

However, Physics and gravity are amazingly implemented, the game is very demanding on your

reaction.

It’s well worth the money though, even just to play it once. Highly recommend.

Well, I’m satisfied. This game is honestly incredibly fun, and fairly unique.

Pros:

  • Austere gloomy noir style.

  • Good Music score.

  • Interesting Level design. You must remember the location of the level elements and keys.

Cons:

  • Some rooms feel like damage is unavoidable, And there are too many dangerous balls!

  • The enemies are very simple, they just move along the trajectory.

Overall, I give this game a 8.5/10, with a few suggestions that are entirely personal.

Truly, this game is worth a purchase. If you love hardcore platformers!

Project Dark Sky

Project Dark Sky

Maya wakes up in the least expected place, at the least expected time…and remembers nothing. She meets people who advise her, but their intentions seem to be different and contradictory. Whom to believe? Whose side should she be on? Is there only one and correct answer? All this seems to have something to do with the space station and the experiment called Project Dark Sky.

Game Features in Early Access:

  • first chapter of the story

  • Side-scrolling action

  • 2D controls

  • combo-based fighting system

  • exploration of world with the replayability of a rogue-lite

  • more YOU fight more skills YOU have

  • Secret rooms

  • Overcome fearsome enemies in a hostile environment - one type of enemys

  • 11 levels

  • 3 combos

‘Project dark sky’ is metroidvania with some side-scrolling beat ‘em up game elements about searching for an answer to the question of what is true and what is not. Our protagonist wakes up in some room with no memory of who she is and how she got there. The characters she meet are trying to answer these questions.

Space Adventures

Space Adventures

Space Adventure is another GameMaker Studio asset flip from serial copy+paste infringers, Neki4 Electronics. All these guys do is rip off game templates and projects from the Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio store, change the name and a few cosmetic details, and try to scam people into paying for someone else’s work on Steam. They have run asset flip scams several times, and this is no exception. It’s nothing but a cash grab.

This time they’ve ripped off a basic template for a 2D retro pixel SpaceWar!/Asteroids ripoff. GameMaker Studio itself is a terrible game construction kit, and this asset flip shows just how bad things can get when templates/tutorials/demos from that construction kit get dumped on Steam as complete games.

$10 for THIS?!!? …ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR $%### *&%$#% MIND?!?!?!?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9bGAeu2mPM

This is either a total asset flip that I can’t find, ‘nor do I care to spend the time to scour the internet to find it… OR It’s made by a novice or lazy developer with the coding skill of a 3 year old chimpanzee that got hit in the head with a rock as a baby.

..I strongly suspect this is just another zero effort asset flip however, and the initial 40% launch discount screams that it’s an asset flip as well.

If you’re browsing reviews and trying to figure out if this game is worth your time and money then here is a quick answer for you: YES. It’s a must have game for anyone who enjoys action packed platformers!

What attracted me when I first saw this game was its overall concept. I will keep it simple for you: you control a demonic creature who’s mission is to escape Hell. And you gotta love the devs take on Hell in this game. It’s basically a vertical tower-like place which you have to ascend in order to make your way out of this demons infested nightmare. Pretty creative in my opinion. So I guess that makes it a vertical action platformer where you fight through hordes of demons trying to ascend higher and higher.

I’ve been eyeing this game for a while, waiting for it to enter full 1.0 release. I bought it immediately, and so far, I am so, so impressed.

The core controls are simple: you have your attack, you have your jump (which doubles as a cool aerial finisher), and you have your i-frame dash. It’s simple, but it works; movement and attacking is buttery smooth, and opens up the real core of the game: the platforming and movement. The platforming and environmental design is simply wonderful. You’ll be double-jumping and wall-clinging around as you endlessly climb upwards, using enemies to bolster your height as you dodge saw blades, spikes, and burrowing thorns. As a huge platforming fan, I’m very pleased to see it have such a strong place in the core game design, especially on special zones like the Slaughter Spire, which has you rushing upwards using enemies as platforms while a row of saws rises quickly beneath you. It’s challenging, it’s frenetic, and, most importantly, it’s a ton of fun. It’s also worth mentioning the aesthetic is great, too - backgrounds, enemies, and traps are very detailed without becoming cluttered or unclear.

Rogue Legacy 2

Rogue Legacy 2

in brief: this game, indeed, takes it pretty rough on you when you first start out. there is no getting around this reality.

if you’re a regular, ordinary-skill_level gamer like i am, please don’t let yourself get surprised by this, or suffer any illusions that your starting experience is supposed to be different somehow.

there will be times you’ll feel like rage quitting, due to dying so often and not really feeling like you’ll ever be able to “git gud.”

there are no “assist” modes to make the journey any easier, either.º

Edit: ARCANE HALLOWS REVIEW (Written Feb. 19 2021)

Roguelike Enthusiast’s Caveat: The player’s progression is directed in a much longer scale over multiple playthroughs due to the nonlinear nature of exploration unlike Hades or Skul. There is also a higher focus on evading stage hazards than said roguelites, with more control in how you start your run than needing to worry about coordinating a build throughout.

New Player’s Verdict: The most recent large update for the game now makes the game well worth the price. Overall changes to the game makes the early-game far more approachable and increased the player’s survivability all around while easing power progression.

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles

To describe this game, it is a tribute to survival horror games of old and plays similar to them, so just a bit of warning as to what you’re getting into. Having grown up with these types of games, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend this to others. As of my writing this, only the first episode has been released, so the review will cover that.

First, we need to talk about the camera. We have fixed camera angles that will move from one location to the next as you reach the edge of the screen, somewhat obscuring the room by giving you limited view, similar to older Resident Evil games before they went over-the-shoulder action. However, with the exception of only a couple rooms, the angles are very well placed to give you information about the room while not completely hiding an enemy within it. If you look around upon entering a room, there will be clues as to what lies in wait for you, so be aware that if you are the type of person who just rushes into everything, you may get worked over.

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles is a pretty direct sequel to Outbreak: New Nightmare, which is a primarily multiplayer based game. Lydia - a character from said game - is the only playable character in Chronicles. Unlike the jump from Outbreak to Outbreak: New Nightmare, Chronicles is on the same general engine and plays out pretty much the same. So, if you enjoyed New Nightmare, chances are you’ll definitely enjoy this game, as it’s essentially a single player version of the multiplayer title.
