Steampunk Graveyard

Steampunk Graveyard

I actually really enjoyed this despite some glaring flaws. I’ll mention the flaws first and then go over some of what I liked about it and you can decide for yourself what you think about it.

So, for flaws I noticed that the levels are pretty much identical. There isn’t much variety in the enemies or in the levels themselves. Once you’ve played one level you’ve pretty much played them all and faced most of the enemies. Despite that, I still actually had WAY more fun with this game than I thought I would. You have a melee option, there’s a long distance option, and there are zombie robots. I mean, where else are you going to find zombie robots? There’s just something really cool about that. If you see this game on sale and you dig platformers already, I recommend it. And I’m saying that despite getting frustrated with one of the levels and not continuing any further since then. I still think there’s enough here to warrant a purchase but that’s my opinion.

This game looks like a first game after some tutorials.

First 3 levels are totally the same. You can rush through them without killing enimies. The final boss can shoot only in one direcation so if you will stay behing – he will never damage you.

Even grenades have no range damage!

this “game” should not cost anything.

Challenging and innovative platformer that keeps the play dynamic by giving you a hero with different strengths and weaknesses after every re-spawn. With different abilities and special power-ups, each new run will force the player to alter strategies accordingly. Gun and sword attack options and an aiming feature that improves shot accuracy give the player lots of options when battling enemies, though some enemies require specific attacks to defeat. Controls are precise and easy to learn. To top it off, the game has a wonderfully high-energy soundtrack.

This game boasts a range of weapons that all have more uses than you might originally think. Need to jump higher or farther do a sword dash. Need to clear a hall of turrets blast them with ricochet from your shotgun.

There are hidden power ups and keys hidden in some levels that make you want to explore just that bit more for the cutting edge to beat the next boss. Over all it is a charming and wonderful indie game with a lovey musical score to accompany it.

Eagle Island Twist

Eagle Island Twist

Eagle Island is an amazing rogue-like game that will draw you in and frustrate you in the most rewarding you. It’s exactly the game I’ve been looking for and I’m very glad I picked it up. 9/10

How I found it.

I found EI when browsing through Nintendo Switch news. I’d been looking for a new indie game to pick-up and it was suggested as a new release. The pixel art immediately caught my attention and I added it to my to-buy list. I saw there was a demo available and decided to try it out on PC. It was fun! The demo was very fun and I had a very hard time getting used to controlling Quill (main character) and Koji (friendly owl - he attacks) but didn’t let that stop em from enjoying the game. At that point, I wasn’t in the best financial position to spend 20€ in a game. But something just drew me in. Something just told me, I have to buy it.

My original review was written extremely shortly after the game came out, but the developer has released an update in response to the mixed reviews that actually addressed a lot of my issues here! There were quite a few tweaks and overall it feels a lot better. Most notably, the runestones are now able to be backpacked and used in later dungeons, which is incredibly useful.

Additionally, I will confess that some of my complaints probably did come with lack of practice or familiarity. So if you are more familiar with this genre, or would be willing to dedicate time to getting used to the feel of the game, I’d say go for it. I’ve got 11 hours in the game now, and it may be a combination of tweaks and me getting more comfortable with the controls, but the whole thing feels a lot smoother and less frustrating.

Gunmetal Arcadia

Gunmetal Arcadia

I’ll try to keep this short. As of this review, I’ve put over 60 hours into Gunmetal Arcadia. Its combat system is clearly inspired by Zelda II for the NES, and I happened to like that game a lot. Let me be clear, though: the game’s combat isn’t nearly as deep as Zelda II, but I still quite enjoyed it. You can even get an item that allows you to stab down in mid-air, allowing you to basically pogo on enemies.

The game itself is procedurally generated across four chapters. You cannot save and quit, so you’ll have to complete a game in one shot. Fortunately, this can be done in less than an hour, but I would have appreciated the ability to suspend my game like in FTL or The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.

J. Kyle Pittman’s “Gunmetal Arcadia” is his personal love-letter - by his own admission - to both “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link” and “Faxanadu”; with the combat mechanics being largely inspired by the former, and the Graphics by the latter (with him furthermore rigidly adhering to actual NES graphical limitations). This is then furthermore coupled with an enhanced version of his CRT Simulation technology, of which an earlier version was previously witnessed in “Super Win the Game”.

However - while the game looks great, and plays great - the most interesting aspect is the game’s Legacy System, and how it plays into Gunmetal Arcadia’s Roguelite elements. Whereas most Roguelike games expect winning to be an ephemeral goal, only reached after tons of hours of gameplay, Gunmetal Arcadia can easily be won (assuming you play well, and aren’t completely screwed over on your early upgrade chances). Instead of asking you to try forever to finish just once, completing Gunmetal Arcadia actually causes changes - both subtle, and sometimes massive - to occur on later sessions. Even though you succeeded - or sometimes failed - to clean out one particular Unmade Hive, there’s still the next mission to clear out that next Hive (which is effectively your next session).

In this unique roguelite platformer, you can create an individual playstyle by enhancing your loadout and combining many different runes.

Kill enemies and improve your loadout to master the dungeon!

Gather runes to improve combat skills

In Lux mina, 20 different runes are giving you abilities and increasing your stats. Your loadout can include 4 runes. There are active and passive runes, available in four tiers.

  • Active runes give abilities and new attacks

  • Passive runes increase or boost stats

Runes can be dropped by slain enemies, found in treasure chests, or bought with orbs at the seller at the end of each stage.

Your loadout is the key to master the dungeon!

Push through different stages

Each stage is randomly generated and has its own biome, so you are always discovering new surroundings. That is why two runs will never be alike.

Fight a variety of enemies

Out in the dungeon are twelve completely different types of enemies waiting for you to be slain and looted. Each fight drops orbs or runes to enhance your loadout.

Earn upgrades to boost your stats permanently

Each run gives you credits to unlock new skins for your character and to increase your base stats. Therefore, you can dive deeper into the dungeon with every run!

One Way Heroics

One Way Heroics

It’s been a while since I’ve played the base game, so this review might contain some bits from the DLC.

First of all, this game is a relatively simple roguelike with a twist: the world is constantly being consumed from the left, forcing the player to continue moving to the right. The base objective for winning is to defeat the Demon Lord, who will generally pop up to fight you after certain amounts of time has elapsed and retreat in a bit if neither is dead. There’s a couple of other winning conditions available, but it’s definitely a spoiler. The Plus DLC adds some alternate campaigns to fighting the Demon Lord, which increases the winning conditions even more.

So, I bought this game a long time ago thinking it was going to be a game where I ran in one direction trying to stay alive.

I was not disappointed in the slightest.

One-way Heroics offers some of the dumbest, funniest, and rediculous gameplay I have ever seen from a rouge-like game.

Slight spoilers below, you have been warned

-Hey, I know you’re new, but you’re supposed to save the world from the left side of the screen since this is sidescrolling and all, and for some reason the left side of the screen is eating everything. GOOD LUCK!

Rick Henderson

Nice but kinda smallish game similar to sterenden (or whatever) with some ravin’ music

Its fun and challangeing but i feel it could use some more work on the enemy patterns and such as you tend to get the same configuration of enemies alot and some of them have enemies coming from behind and theyre no threath at all but slow to appear and slow to kill and gets kinds boring after 10 times things like that should be reworked. otherwise it plays and feels good.

Rick Henderson

Rick Henderson brings in a familiar flavor of a classic arcade experience. Developed by Fat Pug Studio’s, Rick Henderson is an endless horizontal scrolling space shooter.

Rick Henderson is paying a big tip of the hat towards old school 16-bit shoot ‘em ups.

Gameplay: As soon as you get into the game, you will be thrown off guard because of the lack of pointers and button maps. And not only that, but the game doesn’t let you know about the states, weapons, abilities, or how to use them; you’ll just have to figure them out for the time being.
