Hyperspace Dogfights

Hyperspace Dogfights

Updated Review:

Excellent game, 269 hours of playtime (with still more stuff to unlock and do; I only have 98% completion, with a new major update on the way (No Masters, that is)!), excellent potential for challenge runs, and, in my opinion, overall a nigh-flawless example of roguelikes.

By the way, here’s one tip that’s very helpful: If you’re being tracked by a homing missile, a square crosshair will follow you. If you jump while that crosshair is on an enemy, you’ll shift the missile lock to that enemy, thus causing it to seek out that enemy instead of you. Using that trick, you can avoid always needing the Flares active to shrug off missiles (For.. maybe 12 hours or so? I didn’t know that, and so I couldn’t drop Flares without dying, or play any other jet, and I’d frequently die because Flares ran out of charges. Then I saw a loading screen tip.)

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Hyperspace Dogfights is a side scroller shooter set in an weird sci-fi setting with familiar tropes and wild cards. Requiring a decent bit of skill of both maneuverability skills to evade fire and using the capability to enter a controlled stall to dish fire at the enemies on your six or to shoot an enemy from where they least expect.

The game takes inspiration from games like Luftrausers but offers a completely different game experience with a level of progression through unlocks for later playthroughs such as new fighter choices with different starting gear or more gear unlocked to come by in later games.

Shortest Trip to Earth

Shortest Trip to Earth

My experience: I have beaten the game with every ship and on the hardest mode. Please note that my playtime doesn’t really reflect how much I played this game. I tend to leave whatever game I’m playing running when I’m AFK doing other things. That said, it probably would’ve taken at least 100 hours to accomplish what I have if Steam only counted when I was actually playing.

I’ve played some games which shared some attributes of this one but, really, not even FTL is all that close. You can move around much more than FTL. You’re not always running away - in fact, you’re running to the fight. The boarding mechanics are simpler here than FTL. The ship to ship combat and crew management is much more fleshed out here. I can’t think of any other games like this but, if you can, feel free to leave me a comment!

I bought this game on sale. The game has interesting story elements that gets you eager to get to the next sector. At first I was enjoying the game and would recommend the game to any “FTL” lower. But after last 2 runs I would definetly woudn’t recoomended the game. I don’t know if this is because of patching or this is the game design to make you reply game more, the more you play and get better the enemies get more stronger. When I say “enemies are getting stronger” I don’t mean like smarter AI or new tactis, they are basically cheating with some creazy strong weapons while at same time ship repaiers are getting more expencive for you.

Flotilla

Flotilla

TL;DR: Great fun for the humor, visual style and tactical combat. Less satisfying for the fact that it’s game over after a set number of jumps and the core gameplay might get boring within a short span of time. If this game attracts your attention I would recommend waiting for a sale unless it really appeals to you.

Flotilla is going to be a hit-or-miss kind of game depending on your tastes, but I recommend it for its unique concept, satisfying core gameplay, and odd sense of humor.

Let’s start with the good points: It’s got a certain vibe and atmosphere that worked for me, both in terms of simplistic visual appeal and the tone of the events that you can encounter during each adventure. I admit that both the graphics and worldbuilding/humor aren’t for everyone.

Real player with 21.8 hrs in game

Flotilla is a very fascinating take on space exploration. There is no saving, you are the captain, and you are stuck with a fatal disease that will take your life in a predetermine amount of turns. Flotilla offers a lot of real time choices that directly affects your fleet of ships. Some scenarios include saving a group of space-llamas and adding them to your fleet, or destroy them for ship upgrades. The combat is turn based and takes place on a 3D plane; you can command your ship to fly in any direction and fire at enemy ships. With tons of combat choices and flanking decisions your head might explode from strategizing, as a result I can’t recommend this game to strategy noobs. However, if you use to fight alongside Napoleon and George Washington back in the day, I highly recommend this game. Oh ya just play hardcore mode, in normal mode you just end up dead faster from your “disease”. There is virtually no difference in gameplay difficulty by playing in hardcore over normal.

Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition

Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition

This game feels more like a concept in progress rather than a finished product. I have to state this one thing before I start saying anything else. The concept is great, too. But the game-play feels lackluster without more content to flesh out the existing gameplay.

You will spend about 80% of the time mining resources on planets and salvaging resources with a tractor beam while fighting aliens whether you do it yourself or send your clones to do it. The available resources are incredibly limiting and often infuriating in how little is available for what you need despite entire planets that realistically would have more than just the one patch of resources you could collect.

Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition Review

A strange and unique experience awaits…

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. New Game Plus

  2. Multiple Endings

  3. Sandbox experience

Gameplay & Controls:

The controls for the game are fair and easy enough to make use of. The game handles pretty decently as well. Whether you are on a planet fighting off attackers or crawling through your shafts clearing out infestations.

Combat is pretty average, to be honest, and not that well balanced either. Your favourite weapon will be the pistol since it doesn’t run out of ammo and is far easier to make use of. The game is a mixture of ship building, exploration and simulation elements. As you explore planets and debris, you upgrade your ship to accommodate more crew members and gain access to newer technologies to make surviving easier. You don’t really manage your crew, they go about their own thing, food, water, and all those needs are non-existent, which is a let-down.

Rogue Invader

Rogue Invader

In Rogue Invader, YOU are the invader attacking the alien horde in this genre-flipping roguelite shooter. Game-play resembles 1-Bit black and white old-school games, with modern touches and HD graphics.

Twenty years ago, the Zenos began invading terran colonies, leaving a trail of death and tears in their wake. Terrans fought back, one planet at a time, while building a fleet to stab at the Zeno home-world.

You arrive with that fleet, just after a series of massive space battles in which all supply ships have been destroyed. You are left with a huge invasion army but no supplies to invade with other than one drop-pod, and one pistol.

Steel Dungeon 钢铁地牢

Steel Dungeon 钢铁地牢

The game, while poorly written, felt like it has potential to be fun. Likely this game should have come out in Early Access first, but otherwise I didn’t hate playing it briefly.

The chief idea is that you are driving around in a tank while taking out throngs of enemies. You go from room to room FTL style using a variety of weapons in a twin stick shooter style. It definitely needs some balancing and and likely more things should be explained, but there is room to work around and make this game special.

It’s not a bad game, especially for the low price but the UI graphics are a bit amateur and the English is really bad: “toturial” for tutorial for example. Also it’s not a “FPS” but an overhead third person view of the player (a tank). A HP display as a bar or something would be more useful than showing Hp as numbers.

Power of Ten - Demo

An amazing game, you wouldn’t be able to tell that it was a demo! A handful of different ships you gradually discover through the game, an wide array of weapons/abilities/traits to select from. Beautiful pixelated action with diverse enemy encounters and battle settings. A promising show for the to-be-released version, definitely put this on your wishlist.

A great top-down space action game. Fly your space ship, dodge shots, and blow up baddies. It’s not a bullet hell game - it’s a race to mine for resources, achieve objectives, and put out fires as baddies attack inhabited planets. I’m a veteran of such games and found this one a fun challenge.

Rapture

Rapture

Classic roguelike game, many characters available, a lot of different abilities, power-ups, encounters. Every run of the game is different from the previous.

Very challenging fights, you need to carefully organize your team and your moves otherwise it will be very difficult to win, there’s also an easy mode for more relaxed games.

Really nice soundtrack, I hope new tracks will be added in the future!
