Roguebook

Wanted to hold off reviewing it until I beat +15. If you’re looking for a new deckbuilder, I’d recommend this one. I’ve played Slay the Spire, Monster Train, and a few others, and this one really made me want to thoroughly complete it. There is enough variety and unique combinations that really makes each run fun and challenging. It’s not perfect (I’ll talk about that below), but it’s worth the coin.

Positive:

*Gem system adds a fun element that makes some not so useful cards viable.

*The large deck angle adds more ways to build around bad cards.

I unfortunately can’t leave a positive review. I am a linux user. Before buying this game, I checked and saw that the game worked fine with steam compatilibity tools, so I bought it. The game was working perfectly. Then they added an update, which added some random visual bugs (slightly annoying but nothing major) as well as some random game crashes (around once every 1h30 of play for me, but since I’m slow and runs were about 2h30 that was quite annoying). Then the last major update hit, claiming some bugfixes. Cool. I do not experience any bug anymore since my game doesn’t even launch anymore. I’ve tried switching the compatilibity modes, proton versions…etc… to no avail, the game doesn’t launch anymore.

I am a pretty big fan of slay the spire (550+ hours) and I was happy to see another game that is similar, but still has enough differences to not feel like the same game.

The card upgrade system is alright. Cards upgrade based off of how many times you use that specific card. Which is an interesting idea however it obviously encourages you to stall fights so that you can use the cards as many times as you can before fights get harder. I decided not to omega abuse this just because it makes things go so much slower that it isn’t all that much fun.

Great game - having a lot of fun with it. Took me about 20 hours to reach the end of the current content, but it’s pretty evident that there’s a good deal more to come. And I’m still looking forward to diving back in to try some new things.

Little more information for those that want it

Much of the criticisms I’ve seen concern: “massive amounts of bugs,” clunky interface, irritating foes, randomness of cards - here’s my take on those:

bugs: 20 hours - from tutorial all the way to the end - and I’ve never seen a single bug. Doesn’t mean they’re not there. But I haven’t seen any - let alone massive numbers of them.

Little Dungeon Stories

Little Dungeon Stories

Starts off with a good concept but far too short and the events are random so sometimes useless events show up. There is also not much variability in the types of events. Character stats are random and unable to be customised except a one-off buff choice at the start. Boss rewards are not unique, just giving you a refill of resources. The game ends at floor 150 (if you get there that far with rng. I’ve played 7 hours and got there 4 or 5 times) and replayability is limited. I feel a bit disappointed as this is basically completed on release and not in early access where much of the content could be improved. Would need a moderate amount of improvement for me to recommend it.

The Little Dungeon Stories game process is entirely built on cards that entail a certain outcome. In fact, the game about the dungeon works - you get various situations, which are presented in the format of cards with inscriptions, and you can react to them with one of four options. Your actions have certain consequences that naturally affect the gaming process. If you are wrong and make the wrong decisions, the dungeon will sooner or later destroy you, after which you will have to start the game again. This is the whole essence of the game process - you have to pretend where a decision will lead you to, after which you will take it and move on. Sometimes questions are really complex and even logical thinking does not help, and sometimes developers provide quite a simple choice. That ’s the whole point of the game.

Spellsword Cards: Origins

Spellsword Cards: Origins

So I read through a few of the other reviews and I can see how some may find it negative. No it is NOT flashy and doesn’t have ‘interesting’ characters, but to be honest, it’s kinda refreshing. I’m an old school gamer and I’ve played Many card games, rpgs, whatever and I have to admit I’m addicted to this for some reason. I’m determined to beat the stupid lich with all my characters if possible. That being said, it’s also VERY frustrating and will P1ss you off many times! The cards are a bit unbalanced, for example I’ve reached the lich with no access to mana or healing cards depending on who I choose. This makes it a bit unfair, as well as not being able to meet the boss with a full health. No matter how hard I try to finish the previous battle with as high health as possible, it just doesn’t cut it. There was one game I used to play a lot, had over 400 hours until some new dev, crappy pants, redid the whole thing and made it vegas like…I truly hope these devs Don’t do that to this game at all! It’s a game unto itself and Yes it Does need work but it can be challenging and fun if you know how to use the cards given to you. I noticed the new game from these makers and I wanted to give it a shot thinking it would be similar to this style, but I think they already headed to the slot machines….

An interesting take on Card Game / RPG / Roguelike hybrid. I like the mechanic of dumping cards to the discard pile to gain extra action points (earned quite a few 1 turn kill combos that way). I do like the card combinations and various synergies thus far, and I due appreciate the card upgrades system as well.

EDIT: Some previously written issues turned out to be user error, and thus deleted that portion of the commentary above. Other than that, the above aforementioned is exactly the same prior to the deleted, and erroneous (on my part again, sigh) critique.

Cardnarok: Raid with Gods

Been looking around for some indie games and found this little gem. I love the theme and ideas behind this game especially with the choices of heroes from mythologies of all backgrounds.

The combat definitely requires strategical thinking, planning and careful calculation in order to level up fast and build decks that work with your team. At current state it’s quite playable and no bug that bricks the game experience.

The developers have been patching updates aggressively and that is a good sign.

Interesting take on the genre

The core loop is:

  • a string of StS-like maps

  • connected by a monopoly/Game of the Goose-inspired overworld

  • coupled with Rogue-lite Metaprogression

The combat is pretty standard with the caveat of 3 characters (with somewhat varying abilities) in “tag-team”

The Deckbuilding part follow the newer trend and allow the player a high degree of control over the resulting deck

Overall the game could use more polish and some extra content, but it’s a solid buy if you’re a bored deckbuilder.

DIMENSION REIGN - ROGUELIKE DECKBUILDER

DIMENSION REIGN - ROGUELIKE DECKBUILDER

The game feels a bit especially on the boss as :

  1. The boss has a large amount of hp - it is hard to combo break stun the boss.

  2. The boss can one-hit kill your heroes.

  3. With 1 & 2, it is hard to defeat the boss without taking any damage.

Hence you need higher weapons to defeat the boss

Minor user interface improvement would be great:

  1. When level up the hero the numbers should be in this order x/y where

x is the total number of orbs collected

y is the required orbs to level up

DIMENSION REIGN is a story about Karen and her brother Edge The Shadowhog who, so dissatisfied with the customer service at their local Stop N Shop, decide to go on a rampage arguing their way up through the chain of command: From disgruntled employees just trying to calm them down, to dozens and dozens of managers, to security officers trying to politely get them to leave, all the way up to the CEO of the company so that their many dozens of nonsensical, self-centered, and outright bizarre complaints can be heard.

Luck be a Landlord

Luck be a Landlord

The negative comments on this game talk about how the balance is very unfavorable to the player and in order to win, you have to be very lucky. These complaints are valid. But they leave out an important piece of context: This game is being very actively worked on!

The developer is constantly tweaking with the game balance. If you look over patch notes, you’ll see tons of changes to how individual items behave, new items being added, and entire new game systems being included. Over the months, these changes have been very favorable to the player. It used to be that you’d have to play many rounds before you had one where winning was even a possibility, but now most games are winnable as long as you have a decent strategy in mind.

I LOVE the concept and the game is good but it could be better. Which is about right for an early access game.

The biggest issue is replayability. For a ‘rougelike’ that is a big deal and this game has limited replayability. Every run begins to feel pretty samey after you’ve pulled off a handful of different synergies. So far the only efforts made to address this have been adding more symbols and a handful of items. While this adds replayability it is a limited option. Every new symbol and item added makes it harder to find things that go together which lowers the fun and viability of the game. Having 100 new synergies doesn’t make the game more replayable if you can never actually get the pieces together to do any of them.

Second Second

Edit: Changing my review to Positive already after the first patch. They fixed some of the glaring problems, and shrug I like the game. Hope they do more updates soon.

The game is quite interesting. I would recommend it if it didn’t have such huge problems. But right now I can’t do it, not in the current form. The game has some serious problems. I know this is “early access”, but that doesn’t excuse everything.

Biggest issues:

  1. Some combat bugs. When you quit to the menu and go back into the game, the battle replays, and the results are DIFFERENT. Suddenly you don’t take tons of damage, and you now have way more HP. This is just a replay, there should be no change in your HP, however the result is totally different. In the replay, things probably played correctly, or totally differently, either of which is bad.

The campaign mode, was like mode to know the themes of the cards and interections between cards.

On the other hand, the standard mode challenged me to manage time and remaining health.

There is a big gap between these mode, but I indeed that they are both interesting game to play.

As I played this game, the concept of using time to use cards, and various types of cards kept me fresh.

There are some bugs yet, but this would be improved as they provide the updated version.
