Echo of the Wilds

Echo of the Wilds

This review is based on v6 of the game.

Echo of the Wilds is a great little pixel art puzzle/survival game with a very involved developer.

I beat the game my first time in about 17 hours and completed all achievements after about 36 hours. I would say that there isn’t much replayability after getting all of the achievements and most people would be satisfied with just beating the game once (you could get all achievements in one playthrough, but it took me multiple playthroughs to figure out optional puzzles and to really get the mechanics of the game). It was definitely a worthwhile game for me and I did enjoy almost every minute of playing.

Exceeded my anticipation

I bought Echo of the Wilds on the morning of the 9th and “completed” it on the 11th, early evening (approx. 20 hours). I took only 3 breaks from the game, and two of them were against my will. I’m telling you this to give you an idea of how much I really enjoyed this game. Survival-puzzle game sums up EotW tidily, but it’s like nothing I’ve ever played before. There’s quite a bit going on - with three quarters resting solely in the player’s hands and the other quarter left to randomness and the seasons. Some players may feel overwhelmed in the beginning and give up. Just stick with it, it pays off.

Rogue Harvest

Something happened. You wake up in a forest. Now you have to survive! Run, the ents are coming!

This is a great game and try to be cautious, surviving the first night won’t be the best. I started to think the best way is just running for your life. This is a complicated survival game or complicated and funny survival game where you have to create the best shelter to avoid the enemies at night. Yeah, they are not so great at day but the skeletons.. and other things, you know. They going to destroy your shelter. Now you know!

TL:DR: Cheap but fun roguelike survival game, some way to go before it’s finished, but well worth the price with the current content! 7.5/10

Review

Rogue Harvest is a roguelike survival game, with permadeath and gameplay similar to that of hardcore Minecraft or Terraria. In Rogue Harvest you play as the survivor of a plane crash fighting to make sense of and survive in the hostile world in which he’s found himself. The gameplay is fun and currently semi-deep, there’s several tiers of content for each item (from 2-4 depending on the item) and you are free to create some awesome looking houses to defend yourself with.

My wife absolutely loves farm sim games. She plays them until the cows come home. But after spending hundreds of hours in-game, she runs out of content. This game is my love letter to her - an attempt to create a farming game that doesn’t grow stale.

I’ve tried to do that by mashing up the farm sim genre with one of gaming’s old-school genres, the roguelike. Every game will be different, depending on what perks and potions you discover. Choose a different build and learn a different playstyle. Will you be a master miner, excavating for gems in the depths? Will you be a shepherd, keeping watch over your flocks? Perhaps an alchemist, using arcane lore to help plants grow stronger. The mountain trail is full of puzzles to solve and mysteries to discover, and the procedural generation of puzzles means that you’ll never solve the same puzzle twice.

Features:

– A unique plant growth system based on the power of friendship.

– A randomized potion system - potions start off unknown (and potentially dangerous) until they are used.

– Explore the mountain trail, which offers treasure and distractions in equal measure.

– Unlockable perks, potions, seeds, blueprints, recipes, costumes, music, UI skins, house additions, statues, and pets.

– Run-based gameplay - explore a different build each time you play.

– Zero marriage candidates. The main character is based on my wife, and she doesn’t mess around.

Ruine

Ruine

The potential of this game is incredibly strong. The art style, world and characters are making me eager to see more from this game. There’s a solid gameplay loop that’ll keep you experimenting with different builds throughout different playthroughs. Very good stuff!

Obviously, there’s a lot to improve and balance. Combat isn’t as in depth as I feel it could be. Ruins, while fun to progress through, are quite basic in level design and detail, and the game can be finished in under an hour if you know what you’re doing and/or lucky enough from the RNG loot.

Bias: I’ve playtested this game.

While my “hrs on record” do not reflect it, I’ve spent hours and hours playtesting this game - breaking it, finding bugs, dying over and over and over… and I love this game. The art, music, atmosphere, and humor all work together in creating this wonderful game world filled with intriguing NPCs and clever enemies. I am not particularly good at this type of game, but I enjoy the hell out of Ruine in spite of that. I highly recommend checking it out.

Edited to Add: The dev continues to update this game with new content - enemies, areas, treasures, equipment… Ruine just gets better and better.

Wanderlost

Wanderlost

GATHER, FARM, FISH, CRAFT, BUILD, TRAP, FORTIFY, EXPLORE and LOOT your way to post-apocalyptic domination

Thrust into the wilderness with little beyond the clothes on his back the player must navigate a hostile wilderness teeming with zombies and wildlife. Finding food, water, and shelter are three musts but can the player move beyond mere survival to sustainable living, safety, and even domination of their environment?

The world of Wanderlost is procedurally generated so the map can be infinitely explored, each new game is entirely unique, and around every corner are new and unexpected challenges

KEY FEATURES

Base Building

What might begin with crafted stick-fences surrounding a campfire for meager protection will ultimately progress to large, sprawling bases as the player amasses more and better resources. Fortify your position with metal walls or design a maze to take down Zombies without incurring any structural damage. Or focus on infrastructure, choosing to build wells, smokers, and root cellars over walls, turrets, and traps. And spend your down-time on cosmetic alterations, making a flower garden or creating the perfect base layout.

Looting & Exploration

With great risk comes great reward. There are 9 unique biomes in Wanderlost, each possessing unique dangers and useful resources. Venture to the rainforest for bamboo but don’t be ambushed by a jungle cat. Moving beyond the wilderness is risky but many items can only be found in the modern world. The abandoned structures, towns, and cities of old America have the highest zombie density but these modern structures may yield loot beyond what the wilderness can provide. As they say, guns and refrigerators don’t grow on trees.

Farming

Get to digging and cultivate the land around you. While you’re out foraging and hunting let mother nature put in some work growing your meals. Finding valuable seeds and crafting the tools to care for your growing garden will take time and dedication. It may take weeks for the fruits of your labor to be ready to harvest but the investment can provide a stockpile that will last you the winter.

Fish and Hunt

Catch yourself a meal and important resources to level up your survival. Keep warm with the hides you gather and craft fishing hooks and rods for bigger and better catches. Fishing can provide consistent food at a low risk but hunting can yield precious crafting resources like hides to survive the cold months.

Gathering

Spending time gathering resources like wood, ore, fiber, and so on provides the necessary materials to craft increasingly effective items, shelters, weapons, tools and more. Most resources require tools to harvest, be it an axe to chop down a tree, a shovel to dig up a plant, or a pickaxe to mine a rock. There are common resources like wood and stone but for more advanced crafting recipes you may have to scour the world for rare biomes and materials such as the bog providing vital peat and bog-iron. Diverse world biomes motivate exploration and can determine what makes a base location good or bad.

Combat

A lone zombie might be taken down with a club but greater numbers warrant more advanced equipment. Are you a stealthy sniper, picking off zombies one at a time with a bow before retreating? Or a katana-wielding madman capable of wading into the thick of the horde and coming out the sole survivor.

Crafting & Preparation

It’s important to make use of the downtime in between hunting and looting expeditions: crafting arrows, weaving cordage for building, fleshing hides for tanning, reloading your weapons, and more – preparation is vital to success.

Character Customization

While fighting zombies is necessary to survival, Wanderlost also has deep RPG mechanics providing the player with a wide variety of engaging feedback; with each zombie you kill, tool you craft, and tree you chop you inch closer to the next level up, the next attribute points, the next powerful perk for your build.

Alchemic Dungeons DX

Alchemic Dungeons DX

Last week I bought the original Alchemic Dungeons on 3DS. Then just yesterday I found out this came out and bought it immediately. It is challenging and fair. Every time I died it was because I screwed up and didn’t use the right tactic. I love this game and I plan on playing it many many hours.

Real player with 91.2 hrs in game

Criminally underrated game.

While it looks simple and generic and starts very easy, the final 3 dungeons offer a good challenge. While it seems like a relatively generic roguelike, the crafting system does add a lot of depth to resource management, and while it looks simplistic it will keep you on your toes. I also think the UI is reallly good and easy to sue when you get used to it .

It also has a lot of distinct classes (8 initially with a secret one to)

MOTHERGUNSHIP

MOTHERGUNSHIP

This game is a masterpiece of difficulty that punishes the slow, the weak, and the stupid. I say this not out of malice or contempt for the player, but from a position of experience. I have been that slow, weak, and stupid player at one time. I’ve been totally thrashed and left wondering what had happened…and I personally wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve lost legendary items and I had no one to blame but myself when I did. Yes, I was sick to my stomach, but my own failings were to blame. I surpassed them, recovered, and ascended.

In A Nutshell

Mothergunship is an exaggerate fast-paced FPS with a futuristic setting, in which aliens invaded Earth and wiped the majority of the population. You, as a member of The Resistance, will need to board and destroy alien ships in order to locate their command center, the Mothergunship, and destroy it.

This game is mainly about two things: facing dozens of enemies in fast-paced, old-school style FPS combat, and building absolutely insane guns from a very original, intuitive and well made crafting system. Your command center will be your ship, in which you will find various facilities to upgrade your character, once you get enough XP to level up, a shop to buy guns and parts to use in future missions using the money you accumulated previously, a test range to build weapons freely and test the best builds, and lastly, the mission panel, where you will be able to select the next mission, either main, secondary, or endless mode (once unlocked).

Grimm: Dark Legacy

Grimm: Dark Legacy

A lovely beautiful fun game to play and i like it but sadly the game sometimes hangs during play as no doubt it needs an updated patch.

What happens is you could be on a leisure hunt and everything works ok till some point when you collect or killed some creatures then when you try to kill a creature by hitting it then you find you go thru the actions of striking the creature but it has no effect as if your weapon does not make contact with the creature.

Also the same when you try to collect items you go thru the motions of collecting items but don’t collect anything even when you got plenty of space in your bag to store items.

Played Iron Man only. Got to Iceland on my 3rd try. Got 1 shotted.

The game’s good but it gets old fast. I’m not doing another try - quests are too repetitive!

Worth the price tag though, if only for the art.

That being said the game could be renamed: ‘‘Eating & hunting simulator 2016’’.

-Pros-

-Smooth controls

-Amazing art

-Music/soundtrack is fitting

-Cons-

-Only 4 quest types (find a guy, protect villager(s), gather food, kill x mobs)

-You eat non stop. For some reason your guy needs to eat far too much. Food also heals you after your full so you’re always in need of more, it never ends. Even if you end up full you’ll just get hit by something and have to eat half of your rations to heal up, which in turn means more hunting needed.

Finished my first planet in about 10 hours after figuring everything out and exploring every nook and cranny. Love the game! The platforming/survival combo works great, the art is lovely, and there’s a great sense of exploration as you go deeper and deeper under the surface and the landscape changes around you. The procedural generation does a great job with the map, And I love PedeyP—his comments always make me laugh.

Can’t wait to try new planets—took a little peek already and found a lot of variation in looks/biomes/difficulty. Should be interesting!

The game has a lot of replayability even with a small amount of weapons and power-ups because the looping mechanic makes the levels more challenging. In a way, the player is being made to be actually stranded on the “raft boat” when a swarm of variety of enemies flood the looped levels. The difficulty bump between the base levels and loop 1 is pretty huge, but it is set to work out by the time the player gets to looped stages. Unlocking the costumes and daily mode were/are a fun part of the game which made playing the game greater. Overall, the game itself is really great, and it being free is kind of insane because I could see the game having a price tag between $1-10 as it is, honestly. Hope the developers make more!
