After playing the game for quite a while now I can say that I really enjoy it and every little aspect of it.

Art

The artstyle is a cute comic cutout style with almost everything being moved around on sticks like on a kids play which adds a unique charm to it. Small details like two extra arms holding up shields to signify block are just cute.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. This is NOT just another carbon-copy deck builder.

Rise of the Slime feels a bit more casual than similar titles. I died less often, and combat encounters felt less swingy in general. You can expect to get much further in your runs, and to have more control over the cards in your deck.

The adorable graphics and setting are a huge bonus. Most deck builders take place in a highly gritty fantasy setting, and the adorable art style is a nice change of pace. It is also nice to walk through the world rather than click on rooms in a menu. There are even a few secrets with the interactable terrain.

Long ago - when ancient ruins were once flourishing civilizations and their populace lived in idyllic bliss - a mystical star governed all. This review is mostly based on 8 hours playing the demo, and one 2-hour run post-release. Will update sometime.

TL;DR: A good game but not quite ready for release, and the lack of explanations might frustrate you and make it seem harder than it is.

Does the fact that every card you play is destroyed from your deck worry you? It worried me, but it actually works because you get frequent chances to replenish your deck, and you’re not playing with several unique cards but rather a fairly tight set of base effects and improved versions of them. It doesn’t really matter that your sword is gone after you attack, because you probably have 4 more in your deck, you can get another 6 from the next chest you find, and you might have a magical power that gives you 2 swords for free at the start of every room.

Overall, I’d recommend Iris and the Giant for its surprisingly deep positional combat and charming art style. If you’re primarily looking for a great story or you don’t want to fail a few times while gaining upgrades, maybe Iris and the Giant isn’t for you.

I really enjoyed the combat system (I’ll elaborate below). I enjoyed the simple art style and good music. That said, the story didn’t work for me. It felt like it was relying heavily on common bullying/depression tropes. I personally didn’t find the story to be a motivating factor nor did it enhance the game play for me.

Each level of Nadir has its own Floor Guardian that you will have to defeat in order to go deeper into the city. But be careful, each of them has a unique ability!

What is this game about?

Neurodeck promises an interesting combination of deck building paired up with psychological challenges such as loneliness and exclusions and mental health issues such as phobias. If that sounds interesting to you don’t get your hopes up unfortunately. The psychological part is pretty much tacked on, with very thin connections to the main theme, while the deckbuilding is OK at best. Let’s dive in quickly:

Many interesting game mechanics: the shark phobia was a real challenge - it … behaved like a shark would, eating your cards.

Many cards are useless. Too expensive in terms of stamina, duplicating already existing effects, introducing effects which are irrelevant etc. I would say about 3/4 of the cards I have seen are horrid. After most battles you gain a card and the 3 choices are usually so bad that I had to skip selection. Thankfully, there is such an option ( = choose none of the cards) and you can also remove cards from your deck, which is very important for a deck building game. But still too much fluff.

This game is very rough around the edges, but it’s also a lot of fun and has a lot of potential. Hopefully it gets completed and doesn’t die out in early access.

Definitely not a bad unity game but I’d hesitate to suggest anyone spend more then a few dollars on this game in it’s current state. Even with just my few hours in, I feel like I’ve gotten almost everything I can out of the current game.

A nice time sink if you pick this up on sale but don’t expect much depth.

One of the absolute defining games of its genre, Slay the Spire is great fun for virtually endless hours of play. It is a game where your decisions have a massive impact on performance (and while RNG does play a role, it typically won’t make or break a run unless you need an absolute miracle to succeed in a given fight. It is however, very light on lore and exposition. I personally don’t mind the lack of frills, and it does come together very nicely thematically and aesthetically. However, to try to provide a well-rounded review, I admit that is the one complaint I have heard from one or two friends who play the game.

Quite simply, the best deckbuilder I’ve ever played. I only have one other game in my library that I’ve played more than Slay the Spire, and it’s a multiplayer survival game which is made to eat time.

The balance in StS isn’t perfect, of course, but it’s the closest I’ve seen. The developers really have a talent for incorporating interesting card mechanics that don’t devolve into a slew of broken effects. Decks tend to snowball if you build them intelligently (and probably get a little lucky), but I find this to be extremely rewarding - more often than not, the game is extremely brutal at higher difficulty levels, so it feels great when a well-played deck demolishes everything in sight. This works in the other direction as well: a few bad card choices will get you dead with a quickness.

So I read through a few of the other reviews and I can see how some may find it negative. No it is NOT flashy and doesn’t have ‘interesting’ characters, but to be honest, it’s kinda refreshing. I’m an old school gamer and I’ve played Many card games, rpgs, whatever and I have to admit I’m addicted to this for some reason. I’m determined to beat the stupid lich with all my characters if possible. That being said, it’s also VERY frustrating and will P1ss you off many times! The cards are a bit unbalanced, for example I’ve reached the lich with no access to mana or healing cards depending on who I choose. This makes it a bit unfair, as well as not being able to meet the boss with a full health. No matter how hard I try to finish the previous battle with as high health as possible, it just doesn’t cut it. There was one game I used to play a lot, had over 400 hours until some new dev, crappy pants, redid the whole thing and made it vegas like…I truly hope these devs Don’t do that to this game at all! It’s a game unto itself and Yes it Does need work but it can be challenging and fun if you know how to use the cards given to you. I noticed the new game from these makers and I wanted to give it a shot thinking it would be similar to this style, but I think they already headed to the slot machines….

An interesting take on Card Game / RPG / Roguelike hybrid. I like the mechanic of dumping cards to the discard pile to gain extra action points (earned quite a few 1 turn kill combos that way). I do like the card combinations and various synergies thus far, and I due appreciate the card upgrades system as well.

EDIT: Some previously written issues turned out to be user error, and thus deleted that portion of the commentary above. Other than that, the above aforementioned is exactly the same prior to the deleted, and erroneous (on my part again, sigh) critique.
