Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN SHORT:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Third-person shooter. Japanese disaster movie setting. Titanic battles vs arachnid style aliens. Starship Troopers feel. Limited campaign with short missions. Survival and dynamic campaign+ extend play. Dated but passable graphics. Really good soundtrack. Fun but repetitive gameplay. Only four classes. Tons of unlockable weapons with some variation. Average voice-acting. Very grindy achievements. Badly designed survival mode which no one playing. Very slow levelling.

“When you get to hell, tell them the EDF sent ya!”

TL;DR- In spite of all its flaws, and even in the face of a better EDF alternative on the PC, Insect Armageddon still remains an enjoyable shooter that can still deliver many hours of funtimes. Wanna run around and shoot big bugs - this is not a bad game to do so in.

As a quick primer for the uninitiated, Earth Defense Force is a series of third person shooters, developed by Japanese studio Sandlot, which puts players in large fully-destructible levels, equips them with hundreds of wildly different weapons and faces them off against overwhelming numbers of giant insects, UFOs and giant robots. It is beloved by its fans for its fun, frantic gameplay, the ridiculous scale of many of the battles, the ludicrous variety of weapons and the endearingly camp tone of its story and presentation. I am one of these fans, and I absolutely adore these games, having played through EDF 2, 3 and 4.

If you have a creative drive or artistic eye, this game is great for allowing you to express yourself through your builds. The controls are a little wonky to start with and the building “flow” seems un-intuative at first. But it doesn’t take long to figure out how things work. If you have any experience with 3d animation or model building, this is definately in that “wheelhouse”. This feels more like working with clay, than sticking blocks together. There’s a decent amount of additional add-on pieces like hinges and servos, as well as pistons and specialized tools like the suction cup or drill head. The physics in-game are decent as well. Although, to me, the atmosphere feels thin. When taking off in a flyer, it feels more like your breaking the surface friction, than pushing yourself through the air resistance.

Poorly designed and poorly made. Does not feel like a 1.0 game. Most controls can’t be rebound, and the input system is super buggy. Most controls can’t be bound to controller. The vehicle chase camera is awful, requiring constant hands on the controls just to see where you’re going, and like most badly designed things in this game, it’s not adjustable. It’s especially heinous in the space parts of the game, where you can end up upside down relative to the camera, which is just stupid. The game has very few options. There isn’t even a “reset options to default” button, so if you break something, which is very likely, you’re SOL. Multiplayer is a disaster, with horrible lag and desync making any kind of interaction or collision impossible. The challenges mode where you unlock parts and cosmetics is half interesting and half miserable. I ended up getting an automatic collectible grabber bot from the workshop because the sandbox levels with 45 stars were such a chore.

I really enjoyed shooting bottles at the shooting range. It is cool that in the shooting range you can not only practice shooting but also gain points, which can be seen on the scoreboard above the bar, where the results of other players are displayed. Comparing your results with those of other players, you understand that you can improve your shooting and can be shooting more accurately.

I also liked the option in the settings where I can choose: play standing or play sitting.

The fact that you can choose a game with bots is also very convenient because it is not always possible to get together with friends.

This game is just outdated now. It’s an online casual shooter with basically 3 games, but the focus is clearly the online multiplayer shooter. There’s 4 players or more likely 3 bots and you. You are in one spot and you crouch down behind cover. It’s all about aiming quickly (need headshots because body shoots TTK is too slow) and also avoiding damage. So basically crawl in your roomscale and shoot.

When we were offered this key, we honestly didn’t know what to expect–we’d beaten the heck out of Overcooked and Dungeon Defenders before, and this seemed similar, but we were skeptical.

Welp, WE WERE WRONG.

This game hooked us quick and DIDN’T LET GO–it’s sci-fi a cousin of Overcooked with an emphasis on harvesting and defending, and couples will especially love this one and will probably find it a lot less frustrating than others in the genre. There’s some room for this to grow up, but it’s got more polish than existing games in the genre that have been actively refined for years. Check out the WeHeartCo-op review on YouTube, coming soon!

TLDR: fun game, but if you are unsure check out the DEMO :)

D-corp is a really nice coop tower defense game and it would probably be even better if I had friends to play it with.

While it seems meant to be played locally from your couch with a group of friends it does also support steam remote play and is pretty good to play solo as well (what I mostly did).

Some Pros:

  • Throwing things into pits or acid (including your now ex-friends).

  • Different themed levels, enemies, guns (towers) and elements to make each level feel unique.

Fun game. Starts simple then becomes faster and more frantic as you progress. The developer is good people and it is great to support indie developers. Overall have enjoyed so far.

Generation Zero®

Generation Zero®

Rating: 4/10

Generation Zero has a really cool concept, but sadly gets very repetitive after a while.

All the enemy machines are creative and pretty cool, only very few of them. They do however have some variations each which gives different weapons etc.

The map is gorgeous and really looks like Sweden, but after a while you will have looted the same few houses scattered over the map hundreds of times.

Three or four times my GF and I have started this game over, but we have never been able to finish it before it gets too boring and repetitive.

This is gonna be a long review…

The Positive:

So this game like many others released in 2019 was plagued with bugs at the start, some of them game breaking. The developers have worked REALLY hard making the game better and adding more content. I only see a minor bug roughly every 12 hours of play now a days and they can usually be ignored.

The gun play feels good and breaking of the different parts/armor of robots is almost therapeutic, especially when you learn all the parts and know how to disable specific functions to make a fight easier. The story while simple feels realistic and gives you a lot of freedom to do what you want and explore where you want. The game is beautiful! It looks better than most games released this year and the atmosphere is amazing! There is a really good balance in difficulty that makes every engagement feel dangerous (at least when playing solo) and even the most crazy fights don’t feel impossible with proper planning, prep work, and knowledge.

Livelock

Livelock is a Scifi Top-Down Shooter in which you play a Machine implanted with the personality of a Human being called “Intellect” and after awakening from your glorious slumber you get sent off on your merry journey to revive Humanity.

The Game currently features 3 “Intellects” to choose from :

The Catalyst which has the Ability to go for Healing but also features a Damage oriented Playstyle skillset.

The Hex whose entire build is revolved around Flatout Burstdamage , Crit , High DPS and Mobility . but very squishy.

TL:DR - This is a fun little twin-stick, ability-shooter game with some nice variety and customization, but left me wishing there was more of it. I enjoyed the game’s bullet-hell brawler feel as a change of pace from more technical games like Helldivers or longer-term time sinks like Diablo 3. Worth playing.

Pros:

+Decent class variety. Offers 3 classes which each have a primary focus, but have several ways you can play them and different twists you can put on their abilities.

+Growth feels rewarding in the way it enhances power and increases playstyle options.

Supreme Commander 2

Supreme Commander 2

As a stand-alone game it is amazing. But compared to the previous to Supreme Commander games this is a major step down. Remember how there were huge tech trees? such as the tier one factory can upgrade to the teir two which unlocked more units, well thats all gone. Instead now you build a research station which slowly gains research points which you use to upgrade your units not unlock new ones. Remember how you could choose a commander to start the game with? well now it is story based so you have to play the commanders in order (UEF, AEON the Cybran). Explosions are amazingly downgraded aswell. Remember the satisfaction of destroying a commander and watching a huge nuclear blast spread and destroy their base? Well now the commander explodes in a small blast and and all the oppents units die at once. Also all of the experimental units are extremely nerfed remember the AEON saucer? now it is smaller and much weaker, send 7 intercepters at it and it’s gone. The Cybran spider bot has been turned into a crappy little beetle bot which are so easy to defeat they’re in the first mission. All shields are the same size now (small, unless your counting huge UEF shield in the DLC) and instead of them all blocking shots the Aeon and Cybran shields let 15% of shots through! and now all shields look the same aswell. But the most annoying thing, the most annoying thing of them all is that everything you build counts as a unit. No more unlimited turrent defences, no unlimited shield protection and no more complex base defences. If you’re reading this review before buying the previous games then buy this game first or dont buy it at all

This is a pretty fun game! The controls on mouse + keyboard are easy to work with. Reminds me a lot of the Tanks game from Wii Play, but with fancier graphics and design. For the price, its definitely worth the buy!

Real player with 0.1 hrs in game

Well the game isn’t really the best, I kept dying because the bots literally had aimbot (or it seemed like it) Aiming your own tank is very difficult because it doesn’t actually follow the mouse. I don’t even know why I bought this game.
