Assault Suit Leynos

Assault Suit Leynos

I really like AS Leynos, but can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed with it - as an obsessive player of Gunhound, Valken and similar mech shooters I think I overhyped myself a bit. I looked forward to its western - and later PC release for months and even double-dipped and bought the PS4 version anyway. Overall it’s fine, maybe average sums up the game better.

General gameplay is good, and achieves some pretty solid highs at times but suffers from some slightly annoying decisions like pulling you out of the action constantly to introduce a miniboss, or literally moving you away from a defense objective to fight an enemy only to throw a mission failed screen in your face when the thing you were initially defending ends up being destroyed by the enemy.

Assault Suits Leynos is a remake of the 1990 Sega Genesis game “Target Earth” or “Assault Suits Leynos” in Japan. Almost 30 years later and partly produced by the original developer Assault Suits Leynos is back with a fresh take on the original game. Upon looking through a handful of Steam reviews I decided to write my own since a lot of the bad reviews for this game focused on the port being “trash” mostly due to problems stemming from controls when the game first launched.

The developer did eventually offer a fix and you basically have to set your control to xbox which will allow you to remap a controller. There currently still is not a method to remap controls for keyboard which is a nearly impossible sell for the large amount of PC players who consider the Keyboard and Mouse to be the ultimate controller. Not the most intuitive way to fix issues with controls. I was able to plug in a ps4 controller and use it without any issues. If you are a keyboard player I would tell you to use a program called JoytoKey to set the controls how you like them, but again this is not an intuitive fix either, and in the future I hope developers allow the freedom to remap controls. In 2019 not having remarkable controls is considered a solid deal breaker to many, myself included.

War of the Human Tanks

War of the Human Tanks

Battleships and chess with lolis.

Fantastic fun, interesting story with many twists and several endings, engaging gameplay that demands strategic thinking and an incredible soundtrack throughout.

The game’s story is told through visual novel format, which sets the state of affairs and the stage for the battle to follow. Battles are fought in real-time, but with a sort of turn-based system that runs on ticks, for example after giving a unit orders to move you must then wait for it to radio in asking for new orders before it can be moved again. Battlefields are presented as a grid of octagons, and before the round commences you must first place your units as in Battleships. Each unit has it’s own special properties and characteristics similar to chess, for example some may move 2 spaces at a time whereas others may only move 1, or one unit might only be able to attack horizontally whereas others must attack at least 2 spaces ahead of itself. The aim of each battle is to eliminate the opponent’s ‘Command Tank’ before they destroy yours which, regardless of how many units they have remaining, wins you the battle. The battlefield is covered by a shroud as seen in most real-time strategies with sight range varying between your different units, so early game tactics may usually consist of Battleships-esque artillery strikes into the dark hoping you’ll hit something, as your units gradually advance closer to the enemy, thinning out their ranks until their command tank is within firing range.

The first time I saw War of the Human Tanks, I was put off by how obviously low-budget it is; that was a huge mistake. Apparently, the art style just needed some getting used to, because once I got into it, I thought the graphics were actually pretty good. There’s full voice acting, fun animations and even some really catchy music that makes me itch to buy the soundtrack.

But what about the meat of the game? That, for me, comes in two packages (or perhaps Amasson boxes): the story and the gameplay. Let’s get this out of the way: The story is awesome. I loved it. This is definitely not a “skip-the-dialogue” kind of game; in fact, after a certain point, the story became the main appeal. It’s simultaneously lighthearted and grim, with a really interesting setting that ends up being much more detailed than you might suspect at first. There are four endings (two main paths, with two endings each) that all end up being pretty radically different and are all fantastic in their own way. I’m really in love with the setting, and all the little things you can learn about the rather disenfranchised battle-androids they call Human Tanks; the story really exceeded my expectations in every way. The translation is great, and the writing is clever, funny and serious when it needs to be; some of the big twists were huge gut-punchers. I’d definitely say the story was maybe the best part for me, and it’ll stick with me and inspire me for other personal projects for quite a while.

DAEMON X MACHINA

DAEMON X MACHINA

Armored Core Lite.

This is the closest thing to Armored Core on PC, honestly. It feels and plays like watered and dumbed down Armored Core 4. It lacks customization from AC, but gameplay loop as well as presentation (aka being hired by various Corporations that fighting each other) is very close. Story is absolute cringe and not worth discussing nor following. I can point out some pros and cons to break down the game

Pros:

-Closest thing to Armored Core on PC

-Plays and feels almost as AC4

-Had people who developed AC in dev team

I can highly recommend this game, it’s no armor core that’s for sure however the game does provided a lot of customization however most of it would be “locked” until you encounter that part for the mech or weapon type but overall the game is fun, story is excellent and characters are splendid I actually like about 3 or 4 that are my favorite that doesn’t the rest are bad it’s just my personal tastes really.

Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For-

Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For-

Does a robot have a soul? Especially if it’s a kawaii android girl?

This question has been a central theme in quite a few visual novels and anime shows already. Just to name two of the earliest entrants: Chobits and planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~ came out more than a decade ago.

So then, what novelty does Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For- bring to the table? Personally, I particularly liked that the premise of the story was something believable, presenting a very plausible real-life scenario in the future.

Real player with 21.0 hrs in game

In my experience, visual novels are poorly-written, which is a real shame – the combination of audiovisual cues and written word could really lend itself toward breathing new life into old ideas. Unfortunately, Lucy is yet another example of a visual novel that falls short and leaves its medium under-utilized.

The premise of Lucy is interesting, and I had been hoping to see an intriguing exploration of the problems and ethics behind human-android interaction, and while this does briefly come up in the game, it’s only touched on in a superficial and immature way.

Quick:

3/5. Fans of the old Armored Core days may find themselves browsing Steam and stumbling across a promising looking mecha game named Project Nimbus: Complete Edition. This is how I discovered this title, and my initial expectation stuck with me throughout my entire experience with this game. My expectations were met, and in some ways exceeded. This game is pretty good. If you’re looking for a corny story, quick paced mecha shooting, dodging, and sword slashing… then you’re in the right place. However, if customization of your mecha is what you’re looking for, this is not the game for you. Overall I liked the game, and I recommend a play-through.

Bionic Heart 2

Bionic Heart 2

Having somewhat fond remembrances of the first Bionic Heart game (played some time ago), when I came across this sequel on sale for $10, I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, other than the name, there’s not a lot in common. The humor is mostly gone, the characters are very shallow, and the whole concept of “social boss fight” is very contrived. There is a lot of dialog amongst the various endings, but a lot of it is recycled. The art doesn’t really match up with the characters. And the endings just don’t give you much feeling of satisfaction.

Real player with 19.3 hrs in game

This is an nteresting visual novel which sacrifices the typical genre-obliged light-heartedness setting and “romance options” for a much more mature and grim drama, which is quite refreshing.

The games also features a very good soundtrack (which you can find somewhere in the game folder, along a few wallpapers with drawings not used in the game), and good art, far away from the standard VN anime style in most characters.

The game is sadly not perfect. The writing could be the mayor issue. It is much better than that of its predecessor, but still shows some inconsistencies, such as different versions of “reality” depending on the path (that may be needed for making room to the 24 endings, but I find that a bit cheaty and unimmersive), and some deus-ex-machinas hard to explain. In a few points, disconnects from the story of the first game, which I find a good decision. That should allow you to not feel obliged to play that game, which was worse than this one. Also, there are a few minor bugs here and there, nothing game-breaking or particularly annoying (but note that in Linux, the achievements don’t unlock, but if you kept savegames before the endings you can load the savegames in other platform and unlock the achievements by replaying them, I had to do that). All the endings can be achieved but the guides are hard to find and follow (I couldn’t find a comprehensive one). Getting all of them became a bit tedious (and frustrating because of the errors in the guides I used).

Harmonia

Harmonia

Wow, I only now realize how much of a dissenting voice I’ll be… Well, let’s commit this social suicide already. ^^

Harmonia is a Key VN that is in many ways a spiritual successor to one of their greatest games, Planetarian, being similar to it in themes and structure. It’s also, like you would expect from this studio, very well-produced – it looks very good (even though the artstyle is maybe a bit dated) and sounds even better, with music being very climatic and voice acting impeccable (although it’s a slight shame the protagonist isn’t voiced this time around). The game is short (4-6 hours), but tells a relatively rich and complete story, and is priced appropriately.

Real player with 19.8 hrs in game

Harmonia is a Kinetic Novel (for them who don’t know the difference between Kinetic and Visual novels, Kinetic are a fixed story where as visual offer multiple choices which commonly offer different endings) in which you play as Rei, Rei wakes up one day in a abandoned factory out in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, after collpasing trying to find humans you are recused and come to live in the town. The story follows Rei’s interactions and development of emotions (which he has lost) and his understanding of new feelings… but he can’t help shake the feeling something is wrong, the towns people seem off time to time and Shiona seems to be hiding something, and then there is the lonely girl Tipi…

New Gundam Breaker

New Gundam Breaker

I own Gundam Breaker 3 on PS4. And this “New” version is without a doubt worst. But, on its own, it’s playable. I wasn’t sure about buying it first, so I decided to watch some streams before, and I liked what I saw.

Gundam Breaker is a series in which you create your own Gunpla, a model of a true machine. So, you don’t “really” play Gundam here, rather you play the role of a kid who uses a Gunpla to battle some other kids in a VR game. The parts you can use come in two sizes, 1/144 and 1/100. In GB3, the bigger parts had better stats, but here it seems there’s just a difference in size. You can paint your gunpla however you want, and it’s possible to create a true Frankenstein’s monster if that is your goal. Once your gunpla is finished, you can step into the arena and begin to fight.

Real player with 136.8 hrs in game

Let me get this straight - the reason why i’m recommending this game, is because it hasn’t been abandoned, it is being updated, and it has gone a little better since it’s launch. If you are a Gundam fan, and Gunpla fan, there is something for you in this game, the freedom to build and customize is great (not as good as GB3, but that is a console exclusive), the quantity of MS you can get parts is great (250 since last update), a great selection, many custom parts to add to your build, though a bit limited on how many you can put on, graphics are really good, has original music from many series which you can select which ones you want to play during combat.

Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9

Okay so, at the time of writing this I have 3 bosses down.

Yes, I did back this game. Yes I did play the beta.

I won’t deny this game has a lot of controversy around it. But I’m gonna try to stick to the game itself.

Is it bad? No. Could it be better? yeah, but it’s still satisfying.

Is it worth the hate it gets? No, I would say not.

Most importantly, is the game fun? Yes.

I strongly recommend people play, and I mean actually play, not just the 0.2 hour times we’re seeing in the reviews, and form your own opinion.

Real player with 17.1 hrs in game

Mighty No.9 should be a textbook case of how to not destroy the expectations of everyone who was craving this game. There hasn’t been a Megaman or Megaman X game in years, this should have been a cakewalk for this team to do and other studios have shown they can get very close to getting that Megaman feel. I’ll get this out of the way first- I’m not going to go into the gripes about the Kickstarter campaign, or the long wait, or all the other campaigns that were started before this way finished- they have been discussed to death already and you can check from other sources if you still wish to support the game by buying it.

Null & Peta -Invasion of the Queen Bug-

Null & Peta -Invasion of the Queen Bug-

PROS

  • has Steam Achievement

  • great Soundtracks

  • nice Characters design

  • voice acting with full of cheer and spirit

  • the gameplay quite simple

CONS

  • No Steam Cloud, your saved progress will never store to Cloud. (I REALLY HATE THIS SENSATION)

  • there was some lacking in few keys.

ADDITIONAL NOTE

game with a decent crazy comedy Anime story and surprisingly good animation, art, and voic eacting. for storyline really different from Anime version which Peta, Null’s older Sister got an accident where she jarred in the crash with Truck. Null decide to revive her older Sister and final result is not as expected to her mind. you can see the Anime version with buying the DLC here

Real player with 80.0 hrs in game

The story of the game is the continuation of the anime. Since the key items in the game are from the anime, and the game pretty much assumes that you already know Null and Peta, it is highly recommended that you watch the anime before playing the game.

Just like the anime, the game is mostly lighthearted in tone with some absurd and unexpectedly heartwarming or tear-jerking moments. I think that the story could have been made better by explaining

! who Kaki (the beach girl in the episode 6) was or what had happened to Null and Peta’s parents who are mysteriously absent both in the game and the anime, which would certainly have enhanced the emotional side of the story, though I am content to see the origin of the bugs explained and learn more about Null and Peta sisters.
