Chiptune DJ

Chiptune DJ

I love chiptunes, and I love rhythm games. This giant turd gives a bad name to both.

There are 13 songs, and they’re all musically mediocre or better, some are quite good, but musically only.

I beat all 13 songs at least once and it didn’t unlock anything new, so I guess that’s it.

The gameplay both in terms of rhythm game, and general fun, is complete garbage, as is the UI. Even if you’re passing all notes perfectly, the off-timed bloops of hitting the notes (successfully) makes the song sound shitty compared to hearing it on its own.

Pretty well done Stepmania/Osu! -like rhytm game with amazing chiptune music (and great UX/graphics to go along with it). Right now the major downside is a lack of an editor/composer for custom tracks, as the “standard” library is pretty limited, and I’m pretty sure the community would do wonders in this regard.

Some other minor nitpicks I noticed:

  • The game doesn’t remember the last song played when returning back to the song picker, and jumps back at the beginning of the list. This is not a big deal right now, but might become one when the library grows.

Stereo Aereo

Stereo Aereo

Stereo Aereo is a Guitar Hero ripoff where you control a car that has to skip between lanes of traffic (making it appear more like an endless runner), which somehow is how the developers think music is made.

It’s not very expensive and it plays okay (although the menu is almost impossible to navigate if you own a HOTAS or racing wheel because the devs didn’t bother testing the game on PC). The problem is that it’s just not as good as Guitar Hero, or any other music/rhythm game. So just play one of those if that’s your thing.

So if you’re into games like guitar hero or rock band then you will more than likely enjoy this, it’s just a lot smaller.

It’s not an amazing masterpiece but it’s a simple easy to play indie arcade game, it challenges your reaction skills and puts your rage meter to the test, but it is fun with a cool 80s soundtrack that keeps you rocking.

Graphics

No problems graphics wise, the cutscenes are cartoony and the gameplay looks great and all blend in nicely together to give it that retro space look from the 80s

Superstar Dance Club

Superstar Dance Club

Superstar Dance Club is a rhythm game originally released as a budget title on PlayStation in the early ’00s. There’s quite a bit of interesting history surrounding it that Wikipedia won’t tell you, actually.

In Japan it was originally a Simple 1500 game known as “Love Para: Lovely Tokyo Para-Para Musume”, developed by Warashi and published by Media Rings in 2001, with XS games localising and releasing it in North America in 2002, and Europe in 2003. It’s existence is mainly to cash in on the Para-Para dancing fad in Japan at the time. A lot of that cultural significance was understandably lost in XS Games' localisation, which is what this Steam version is based on, but you can still see elements of early ’00s Japanese culture in the game’s visuals.

I FIGURED IT OUT, THE CONTROLS ARE ON THE NUMPAD!

5 = X

4 = Square

6 = O

After playing through nearly the whole game, I must say this game is TIGHT.

IT’S SO TIGHT.

Music Racer

Music Racer

Today is May 24, 2020. I recently realized that my review for Music Racer was probably not written in the best state of mind, so I’m back with a good night’s rest under my belt. I opened the game up in non-Legacy mode.

Grading Criteria:

non-Legacy vs. Legacy (pre 5/27/19 update)

I. Graphics

II. Gameplay

III. YouTube plugin works?

IV. Replay Value

The non-Legacy version is the version of the game made after the 5/27/19 update, which broke the game for a lot of users at first (but now it’s fixed, so +1).

You may be confused why I’m reviewing this game with barely any playtime. It’s because I’ve played the mobile version of this game, and after just a few minutes of playing I can see the pros and cons of the PC version.

I recommend this game, however, I will give a rather critical review.

This game in a nutshell: Beat Sabre with cars.

This game in an essay:

You have to choose a car, the colors of the rims and the body if you’d like, a map, and a song from either your computer or YouTube. I recommend using local files, as some songs may not show up on the YouTube option.

An 80’s Love Letter That Just Falls Short

Don’t let my “Not Recommended” rating dissuade you - Neon Drive is the most intense, addicting, visually arresting rhythm game that I sadly cannot recommend outright to everyone. It’s at times like these that I wish I had a different option other than a simple “Yes/No” answer. This game is good - very good in fact - but it has problems that prevent it from being great. If you love rhythm games, challenging difficulties, or the 80’s aesthetic then you’ll probably love this game as much as I do. However, if not then don’t let this game be your introduction.

I had fun with this game but can’t recommend it due to issues that make the hard/insane difficulties far more difficult than they really need to be.

The plane level has a loop that basically doesn’t interact with the music at all, forcing you to just figure it out via trial and error.

The falling traffic section has cool music that doesn’t help you in any way. It’s just falling enough times to memorize a safe path through.

The Robot level has a series of hurdles that require the first jump made be well timed. There is no useful music for the first jump, in fact there’s a misleading series of notes that will get you killed if you use them. The following hurdles all have super useful notes to help, but this doesn’t matter if your first jumps timing is off, you’ll die on the later hurdles if it is. ((I guess it’s possible to ajdust your timing between hurdles, but that’s like, tasbot levels of reaction time. Not what rhythm games are about)) This problem exists on other levels, but it’s not as pronounced as it is in the robot level, due to its unique mechanics.

Space Channel 5: Part 2

Space Channel 5: Part 2

This is my first time ever writing a review for anything, so I hope that says something about how much I love this game! Where do I even start? the music is VERY good, the characters are really fun and the story is entertaining as well. theres a lot of different set pieces in levels that I find never leaves you feeling bored of the button pressing game play. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who likes rhythm games, or any sega/ dreamcast fans who never picked up this game before. I also think its really cool how theres different animations and lyrics to levels depending on how good your doing, lol. a couple of things that are kinda annoying is that the game sometimes gets out of sync with the audio, causing you to mess up, and sometimes when I press a button, the game wont reconize I pressed it. I find that you should play this game with the d-pad and not the stick, as it seems that it doesnt reconize when I shift directions on the stick a lot of the times, while with the d-pad it plays perfectly. I hope somebody finds this review helpful, have a nice day!

Space Channel 5: Part 2 Review

In this review of Space Channel 5: Part 2 I will mention:

  • What the game features

  • What is good and bad about the game

  • A TL;DR (This is because the review is a lengthy read)

Important Note

It is worth mentioning that I have played this game for almost 40 hours as i write this review. This can mean one of two things:

1 - This chonky review can appear completely biased depending how you read it. Nevertheless, I will do my best to address everything I can

BIT.TRIP RUNNER

BIT.TRIP RUNNER

BIT.TRIP RUNNER was first released on the Wii as part of a collection of games, digital only as Wiiware. This one stood out in the collection, became sort of a cult classic and led to a couple of sequels. In the meantime the entire BIT.TRIP collection was released on a plethora of different platforms, including Steam.

This game has you controlling a little 8-bit pixel guy called Commander Video throughout a unique pixelly world. All the commander really does is auto run in a linear fashion on a set stage, from left to right. You have to make it all the way from the beginning to the finish line without running into any obstacle, all the while collecting gold bars. A very simple concept, yet this game’s difficulty is absolutely brutal. The aforementioned obstacles present themselves in the form of drop pits, fire, projectiles and the environment as a whole. If you run into a wall, you die. If you fall into a pit, you die. If you get hit by a projectile…dead. You probably kind of see where I’m going with this…

This game is fun and addictive, but it has some major flaws.

First of all, the difficulty curve in this game is all over the place. Now, I’m not sure if this is because I got used to the game as I progressed, but I felt that some of the later stages (especially from world 2) were incredibly easy when compared to the earlier ones. The difficulty ramps up again towards the end, but you’ll still find that it varies greatly from stage to stage instead of following a steadily rising curve as you would expect.

Old School Musical

Old School Musical

I’d recommend the base game, but wouldn’t recommend the Chicken Republic DLC.

The base game is very short but provides a fun experience with a story full of gaming references and jokes. The highest difficulty could be a bit more challenging as I found myself easily breezing through (as an experience rhythm game player) but overall the balance is correct. The soundtrack is excellent, although the very first track of the game is quite possibly the weakest, in a style that contrasts heavily with the rest of the game. However OSM suffers from a few issues that I found easy to overlook in the main game, but absolutely detrimental in the DLC.

Old School Musical

The video game parody equivelant of Excel Saga, and if you know what I’m even talking about you know you’re in for a treat. Non-stop blisteringly funny and self-aware gamegeek humor with a constant barrage of grin-inducing references, which should tell you enough to know if this is your jam.

Old School Musical is the kind of arcade purist rhythm-game that could give Groove Coaster a run for its money, easily. Does it have the legendary and iconic musical pedigree of game composers the likes of Zuntata? Not quite. But it does have the energizing and nostalgic chiptune jams of modern day chiptune pioneers like Zabutom, Dubmood, and Hello World and that’s -almost- just as good.

Hi!, I had this game in my wishlist since i saw it in my descovery queue on the 4th or 6th, and I finally got it a little while ago. I must say this game is alot of fun to play, maybe its because im a sucker for good rhythm games but either way I’m full impressed with the outcome. Now there were a few minor nitpicks I had about it:

1: sync,

I’ve only played a little bit of the levels that you get at the start and I noticed that the levels sync very nicely with the songs but I found that sometimes it didnt really sync that well, It’s nothing I cant deal with though.

You don’t realize how long a minute lasts till you play this game.

Music of this game is awesome, it says, when you boot the game up. Yeah, it’s okay, decent. But what is far from awesome is the game itself. 64 does not want you to win, it does not want you to go, it does not know what it wants. I assume the original name comes from giving each color 4 sections, which makes 16, and dividing each section into 4 bars.

What we get in the end is far from this idea. It is not a rhythm game, it tries to be reaction-based game, it ends up being that mixed with memorization of patterns.

After Audiosurf made revolution in rhythm genre by letting us turn our personal MP3 files into custom racing levels, we’ve got all sorts of things with similar concept. It’s kinda fun, but, even though Audiosurf had a lot of space to improve, nobody ever tried to seriously compete with it. I mean, we’ve got quite a lot of rhythm racing games. We’ve got Music Racer, we’ve got Rhythmic Retro Racer, we’ve got Rhythm Race and so on. But those were just quick ways to make money. None of those ever tried to compete with Audiosurf for real. While games that actually tried to deliver something real? They just went for the other sub-genres.

When I first got this game I was really hyped because it was brought to us by the same people who made Music Racer, which already was a fantastic game. The graphics, game play, and the overall beat recognition was amazing and also trippy AF.

The problem I first had with the game was that it wouldn’t play YouTube songs, nor would it even play my own audio files. So that made me really disappointed. I read reviews that other people had posted about the game and they all seemed to have the exact same issue. A lot of people were saying that the developer stopped working on the game. At this point in time I believed them and I haven’t touched the game since.
