BEST GAME OF 2021!

Hitting notes on the 7th beat never felt more satisfying.

(And sometimes in other patterns)

Custom levels add great replay value, I’ve probably spent more time on those than in the main campaign.

10/10 IGN would play again

Project Arrhythmia

Project Arrhythmia

It’s a cool game.

But you’re not here for a simple review like that, are you? You want me to tell you WHY it’s a cool game. A detailed review, yes. So here’s that:

-There are countless levels out there to play, and SO MANY are worth your time. The workshop is constantly updated with new levels from the community to check out. There really is infinite content.

-Bullet hell/music dodging type gameplay takes a focus here. If you’re into that, you’re in for a treat.

-The game’s menu aesthetic fits the vibe it’s going for - the whole computer terminal look fits the (upcoming) story, and is executed really well.

Since Project Arrhythmia is in early access, I’ll try to go easy on its work and design. After watching people PA levels on YouTube, I thought it would be nice if I could design some levels myself. Note that this review has been revise on 7/18/2020. I do not hate the game, but it has issue that I need to address.

-Menu-

When I install the game, the menu wasn’t presentable; there were 8 options (Story, Arcade, Editor, Config, Discord, Credits, News, and Exit) on the top left and a ton of blank space while music was played in the background. I’m not to sure if there was suppose to be a style theme to this game. I noticed anytime text appear, it comes out like a code. With a game that shows effects and colors, you wouldn’t expect the main menu to look dead. All that bank space, yet nothing to fill in.

Muse Dash

Muse Dash

This is a temporary WARNING review as the game is currently unplayable for many users. The last update introduced many bugs which make the game literary unplayable for many players and unpleasant to play for others. It came out on Friday and there was no fix nor any sort of communication from the devs since. The least they could do is to rollback to a previous version and at least apologize, but there is nothing.

The biggest issue being that you can’t play ANY levels, you just get stuck on purple screen with music in the background while no inputs register, you must force close the game to get out.

Great introduction to rhythm games, easy to start with but there’s a lot of challenge as well. Basically, just tap the keys to smash the enemies to the rhythm of the song.

At the base price, this game is a steal. If you like the basegame, get the DLC, you won’t be disappointed.

I definitely recommend unless the weeabooish graphics and music are totally not your thing. Personally I think the songs are mostly bangers and the girls are cute. And Rin is the best girl.

AudioSurf

AudioSurf

Audiosurf is a very, very unique game and is definitely a landmark in the music/rhythm game genre. Unlike other rhythm games, which limit you to specific in-game songs, Audiosurf is limitless - it allows you to play any - that’s right, any - MP3 of your choice, so you can suit your gameplay to your own music tastes. This freedom is rarely found, if at all, in music games, and it has set the stage for other music games in the vein of it, such as Beat Hazard and the more recent Melody’s Escape. In my opinion, Audiosurf has infinite replay value, as long as you have a large amount of songs to play.

I’ve played this game for a pretty long while and still play it, simply can’t stop oO

Basically I launch drum & bass tracks in such styles as darkstep, techstep, neurofunk, liquid funk. From time to time I launch heavy dubstep which’s mainly deathstep style and also, sometimes glitch-hop, neuro-hop styles of glitchy Electronic Dance Music - it’s an amazing experience and makes about 90% of my races nearly impossible to finish with a good score. Tho probs I’m just a noob, but I still love it very much! xD

Intralism

Intralism

Intralism is a rhythm based music game that requires precise and precision note hitting to get the highest possible scores and ranks for charts using the w,a,s,d or the arrow keys (can rebind them to anything you want in the options still). The game has a very steady community that makes charts for various genres like anime, blues, children, classical, jazz, rap, metal, rock and more so there is something for everyone. Charts range from easy to hard, slow to fast even one/two handed charts. There are community events for summer, winter, Halloween, Valentines day and so on that allow anyone to make charts then are chosen to be in the event that can get you special Steam inventory items and regular users can play the event charts and obtain event only items too.

Intralism

A fun rhythm game quite similar, but not the same as other Beatmania’ish games.

The circular layout can be hard to get used to, primarily if you are used to playing other rhythm games, but I believe it is much more pleasant to the eye and can result in more impressive maps/storyboards (while that is obviously up to the mapper).

Some pros:

There are official (==ranked) maps for various levels of skill and a diversity of genres available.

New official maps are (at the time of writing this) chosen every week.

Holodance

Holodance

I’ve tried a few of the popular VR rhythm games: Beat Saber, McOsu, Airtone, and Holodance

Music selection

Holodance and McOsu support osu! beatmaps, and Beat Saber has its own unofficial library of songs (requires a mod).

Only McOsu does not include any songs, and only Airtone does not support custom songs.

With Holodance, I usually used the ability to select a random song within a difficulty range.

Gameplay

With custom songs, Holodance provides three ways of hitting notes:

At 71 years old I’m quite certain most other players of this VR game are considerably younger than I am. I just started playing it yesterday. I’ve logged in 2.2 hours of play so far, gathered 10,200,000 points, and am enjoying it a lot. I exercise close to 3 hours a day, and this game will now add a bit more to that. Primarily arm exercise of course, but arms need exercise too.

This game is different in that you are not just hitting targets flying at you, you have to use your brain too. You need to quickly determine what type of target is coming and where you need to hit it, and then move your arm in the correct direction to capture that orb and get the points for it. Plus you have very little time to make these determinations.

TL;DR:

Pros:

  • + Base game is very cheap - still has decent song selection

  • + For novices and masters alike - People that say this game is easy do not understand the scoring system

  • + Awesome visuals, well placed notes and keysound system making for super satisfying gameplay

  • + All quality of life features and adjustments expected from a good rhythm game included (offset value, 3d and 2d visuals etc.)

  • + Vast amount of musical genres

If you’re looking for good rhythm games on steam, your options are pretty limited and this is a great addition to the current library of them.

This review is from the perspective of a Beatmania IIDX 10th Dan and experienced Pump It Up player (s24/d24), who also plays other rhythm games (SDVX/Taiko/Miku/Ouendan1&2/Rhythm Heaven/Groove Coaster, etc), so hopefully that will help somebody give it more perspective, if you don’t know what any of the things I wrote above means then don’t even worry, I’ll explain more below.

Lofi Ping Pong

Lofi Ping Pong

Lo-Fi Ping Pong is a rythmic game, where you listening Lo-Fi music and beat your oppenent at the end of the song.

What really good in Lo-Fi Ping Pong, is the controls. It’s easy. You need 3 keys, which can be WAD, the arrow keys or using controller direction keys. Because of these choices, playing together in splitscreen is also easy, because you could play in one keyboard too. Simple and sweet!

Another thing which surprising good, is the story. Now, if you play the game, you won’t notice too much… except at the end, but the game has some more meaning symbols in the game, messages can tell also a lot about what is happening. It was quite a twist for me at the end, left me with a void for sure, even though it’s not an indepth something, it was still quite an impact.

Since I do enjoy listening to lo-fi, this title caught my attention, so I decided to purchase during the Steam Sale just to see what it was all about.

Well then, you take control of this girl and you play against other players wearing animal masks, something that immediately made me think about Hotline Miami (just checked the developer, and even though it has nothing to do with Dennaton, I’m pretty sure that they’ve got some influence out of it). i’m not really sure if there’s a story or not, but overall, the girl is dealing with some problems and playing ping-pong, while listening to some sick beats seems to be helping her somehow.

The Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor

This game… this game is just a work of art. A diamond in the rough. I’m so sad this game isn’t known, the word needs to be out to all lovers of Rythm-based games. Because this is my absolute #1 favorite Rythm matching game in the whole wide world. The gameplay is exiting. The story halfway takes itself seriously, the voice acting is enthusiactic,, the soundtrack BOPS and the cutscenes are incredibly cheesy, but looking past the cringe it really adds some charm to the game and its characters. I sum this game up to my friends as “Darkest Dungeon and Guitar Hero mixed together but with neon lights and electronic music” Puuba took the concept of an RPG / Rythm matching game and nailed it on the head.

Real player with 69.8 hrs in game

In short, if you enjoy rythm games and are looking for a unique spin on the genre, buy this game. You won’t be disappointed.

In many more words, Metronomicon is, as advertised, a mix of rythm and rpg, and boy has it been executed well. It’s honestly amazing.

First of all, despite this game being an indie title developed by a small studio that simply doesn’t have the money to license big, well known songs, the song’s library of 50+ songs seriously won’t disappoint you. Just like the game, the songs in it are hidden gems in themselves. All of them are absolute bops and perfectly set the mood.
