Great bite sized rhythm game. The Legend of Dark Witch is a great franchise and I’m glad to be following it still to this day.

God of Riffs does seem to have a lot of potential. The recent 0.8.3 update brought many QoL updates, which significantly improved the quality of the game, and the developers are quite active on their discord server.

Giraffe and Annika

Giraffe and Annika

“Making happy memories with cat ears girl! ヽ(=´▽'=)ノ”

[1] Intro

Giraffe and Annika. This is a 3D rhythm puzzle adventure by atelier mimina. At the time of the first announcement, the publisher was UNTIES, but it appears that the publisher was later changed to PLAYISM. The background of this game is about Anika, the girl with cat ears. One day, she woke up and found herself on the mysterious starlight island(Spica). What adventure is waiting for her?

It’s okay for a game about drowning. I died probably a thousand times playing through the story, and can remember almost every individual instance that didn’t involve drowning in shallow water because I couldn’t find an object or surface to climb onto. Most of the non-drowning deaths were memorable in how brutal they were as game concepts, like being immolated when straying too close to insta-kill volumes like fire or crushed to death by falling boulders. So…definitely not a kids game?

In fact, I really grapple with the question of who I would recommend this game to. Not to kids, it’s too difficult. Not to srs gamerz, it isn’t difficult enough. Not to rhythm gamers because there isn’t enough of that content. Not to adventure gamers because there are no requisite adventure features like quest logs, maps, or a compass. Not to achievement hunters because the achievements are actual (“beat the game within 4.5 hours”) burning (“cleared every hard rhythm game on S rank”) garbage (wait until Dec. 24 or 25 for a Christmas achievement!). There’s also no combat, which is a plus for me, but… not being able to fight back isn’t fun either?

LightBreak

LightBreak

Description

LightBreak is an art-focused, narrative-driven musical game. Discover the story of Ava, a young traveler who has undertaken numerous adventures and now wishes to return home to recount her tales to her mother. Ava, however, has lost her voice, and due to her mother’s blindness, she cannot rely on visual storytelling. Ava’s one form of communication with her mother is the powerful musical instrument she wields.

The game features a unique gameplay, blending puzzle elements and music to create a dynamic music creation environment. In LightBreak, you control the Magical instrument that Ava is playing - to help her connect with her emotions and communicate her journey to her mother.

Main Features

  • A Novel Approach to Audio-driven Game Design

  • Interactive audio design by an award-winning composer

  • Storytelling game with themes of repair, family, communication, and good vs evil

  • Visual representations of Ava’s adventures

  • Stunning hand-drawn art

  • 3D modeling and animation

Gameplay

LightBreak’s main objective is to help Ava play the correct notes on her musical instrument so that she can describe her tales and reconnect with Mother after many years of separation.

The Gameplay is a novel narrative-driven fusion of Audio and puzzle elements. Each face of the magical instrument represents a “track” on the bigger mix. sometimes, your Instrument is out of tune, and you need to tune it to play the music correctly. Eventually, players will enter flow as they essentially create music by fixing up each track of the music. When they find the correct tune, the environment changes drastically as the instrument will render the music and show the visual representation of Ava’s memories connected to that song.

RhythmSlinger

RhythmSlinger

Definitely a good future to this game, it does come with a bunch of different pistols and themes. Also this game definitely feels procedurally generated in that the ‘beatspheres’ respond to the type of music played or at least the bpm of the song. I got some different pop songs off youtube to play with this game and enjoyed the pacing of the beats.

The tricks definitely take some time getting used to with the different pistols, I’ve found the western (orange) pistols to be the easiest in setting up for the trickshots. I was playing this game in easy mode and getting the timing right on the white trickshot spheres was the most difficult because they last longer than the other beatspheres, but I’m guessing that it allows you extra time to perform the trick.

Real player with 5.7 hrs in game

It has promise but the controls for tricks are pretty tough. For example theres a white sphere that appears for only 0.5s and doing a trick to shoot it can take longer than this. Doing in my mind same movement with hand didn’t always correspond to same heigh or duration of the trick and sometimes it just didn’t activate on index knuckles.

The Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor

The Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor

This game… this game is just a work of art. A diamond in the rough. I’m so sad this game isn’t known, the word needs to be out to all lovers of Rythm-based games. Because this is my absolute #1 favorite Rythm matching game in the whole wide world. The gameplay is exiting. The story halfway takes itself seriously, the voice acting is enthusiactic,, the soundtrack BOPS and the cutscenes are incredibly cheesy, but looking past the cringe it really adds some charm to the game and its characters. I sum this game up to my friends as “Darkest Dungeon and Guitar Hero mixed together but with neon lights and electronic music” Puuba took the concept of an RPG / Rythm matching game and nailed it on the head.

Real player with 69.8 hrs in game

In short, if you enjoy rythm games and are looking for a unique spin on the genre, buy this game. You won’t be disappointed.

In many more words, Metronomicon is, as advertised, a mix of rythm and rpg, and boy has it been executed well. It’s honestly amazing.

First of all, despite this game being an indie title developed by a small studio that simply doesn’t have the money to license big, well known songs, the song’s library of 50+ songs seriously won’t disappoint you. Just like the game, the songs in it are hidden gems in themselves. All of them are absolute bops and perfectly set the mood.

Norman the Frog meets friends on his journey that join his quest and help him along the way. Each party member grants an additional skill to be used while exploring that can aid in solving puzzles and navigating the environment. The party members will also lend their skills during combat in the form of attacks and magic spells.

Holodance

Holodance

I’ve tried a few of the popular VR rhythm games: Beat Saber, McOsu, Airtone, and Holodance

Music selection

Holodance and McOsu support osu! beatmaps, and Beat Saber has its own unofficial library of songs (requires a mod).

Only McOsu does not include any songs, and only Airtone does not support custom songs.

With Holodance, I usually used the ability to select a random song within a difficulty range.

Gameplay

With custom songs, Holodance provides three ways of hitting notes:

At 71 years old I’m quite certain most other players of this VR game are considerably younger than I am. I just started playing it yesterday. I’ve logged in 2.2 hours of play so far, gathered 10,200,000 points, and am enjoying it a lot. I exercise close to 3 hours a day, and this game will now add a bit more to that. Primarily arm exercise of course, but arms need exercise too.

This game is different in that you are not just hitting targets flying at you, you have to use your brain too. You need to quickly determine what type of target is coming and where you need to hit it, and then move your arm in the correct direction to capture that orb and get the points for it. Plus you have very little time to make these determinations.
