The Chameleon

The Chameleon

Ok, I liked this game, might even speedrun it, but I have to give it a negative review because it’s exactly as I feared: it’s just the demo but double length.

For the price point it just ends too soon and feels like it doesn’t explore its concept enough. Also considering this was in the haunted ps1 disc this year, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably played the demo, which means you’ve experienced the best this game really has to offer already and you don’t need to buy it. You get the blink power in that demo and then it ends soon after.

Really fun stealth game!

As a massive Splinter Cell (Chaos Theory) fan, this scratched that itch.

It’s super cheap, but it is rather short (beat it in a little over 3hours), however I think with the price, and just how fun and well designed The Chameleon is, it was definitely worth the price. I think I might even feel like replaying this at some point.

Liked the story, if there ever were a DLC expansion, or just a sequel, I’d buy it.

The atmosphere, visual style, modern effects complementing the retro style, just feels great. There’s neat dynamic lighting, a cool dithering effect on high pixelation, lots of moody coloured lighting, details all around, notes to read to enhance the setting, charming humorous touches.

Operation: Pinkeye

Operation: Pinkeye

Operation: Pinkeye is a first-person shooter throwing back to shooters from the 90s by the likes of Rareware and Free Radical Design.

Set in an alternate Universe where the Acts of Union in 1707 never happened, Scotland and England remain independent and tensions between the 2 remain very high.

A journalist has been killed in a hotel in London near a political rally, his room was ransacked, as if their murderers were looking for something. It was believed that he held important documents containing plans by the English to invade Scotland. Fearing that this is the case, The Scottish Secret Service (The SSS) assign their best agent, Ken Maxwell, to obtain the stolen documents, and find out exactly what they’re planning.

Traverse through 15 levels of high-octane spy action, with music from the composer of Planet X3, and FMV cutscenes filmed in Scots!

Features

  • Relive memories of ’90s era shooters without the annoying bits

  • Faithful old-school graphics

  • Multiple language support, including Scots and Gaelic!

  • Customisable mechanics and controls!

  • Music from the composer of Planet X3 and Half-Life: Dark Matter

A fun stealth game. It’s not too hard to get through the levels, but getting the extra achievements like beating the clock and picking up the hidden badge add a nice extra challenge.

Simple yet effective stealth game. Now without achievement breaking bug !

Took me 7h to 100%. Some of it is agreeably challenging.

Wasting Away

An atmospheric horror game with semi-open world. You can really feel the atmosphere of loneliness. The further the better, but everything is ruined by a strange and unbalanced fight with the final boss.

Still recomended.

Really enjoyed playing through Binger Ninja!

I love the aesthetics of the game as well as the tongue in cheek humour. The music and visuals really do make you feel as though you are back playing a game boy game.

Seems like the developers have really hit the niche that they were going for which translates to a fun game :)

So, you’ve read the description of the game and now you’re here looking for the truth. Watch the video posted above, it’ll give you an intro to the game, gameplay and my thoughts on the game.

Binger Ninja is an interesting oddity in the sense that has way too many mechanics, charm and clarity to be only $1 (USD). I was not expecting so many polished systems, driving narrative and fun gameplay. Do you fancy yourself a ninja? What to crawl through vents and hide behind plants? Do you enjoy attacking people unmercifully with food? Are you hungry right now? A simple yes to any of these questions tells me that Binger Ninja is the game for you. Pick it up now and tell your friends as well.

It’s a unique auto generated game. Missons tend to be often very similar but there is always different glitches. A unique touch I saw was each auto generated game has it’s own little backstory for why your playing the “game” like every video game. The only glitch I see is with the flying mission which is if you try to barrell roll it doesnt work then u cant shoot and in shooting as planes sometimes if u die u never respawn/get the restart u should. Through the ramble I would say it’s a good time killer if you just want good casual fun to kill stress tho some of the hard mode glitches uggh lol I’d wait for a discount but like $15 vs th e current $20

I really wanted to like and recommend this game, but I cannot.

On the surface, the idea sounds great. Mix and match pieces of different retro games/genres and play through whatever wackiness gets created.

In reality, the game overall fails to deliver. Individual mashes take at most 10 minutes to play through, but rarely did I ever spend that much time in any one “game”. Instead, some are so easy (even on a hard setting) that you’re in and out in a matter of 30 seconds or less. The game description even calls out that some mash ups easy to win, some will be impossible. That’s acceptable given the premise.

I took me two atempts to get warm with this game but then it was fun.

I got it for 1 euro in a sale and its worth that. For just 1 euro you can bomb beautiful places like Libya.

Good classic for people that like that charm. Very well emulated.

Absolute belter of a game. Played this and F19 and the original Gunship! back in the nineties on a Commodore Amiga 500 then on a 1200 Amiga. (also played Gunship! and F19 on a Commodore C64 complete with wire frame graphics!) Later played on a PC not as good as on the Amiga’s. but then no PC is as good as the Amiga.

The game still is one of the best OK I am lucky I still got the original manuals, maps and keyboard overlays etc. which makes the games much more enjoyable for me than for those who do not. So here I am a 68 year old playing these games from decades ago which says a lot about the standard of gameplay from Microprose. In fact I am still playing my Microprose collection Gunship!, F19, F117A, Pirates!, Red Storm Rising, etc. on the Amiga 1200 (how many pc’s form the eighties are still going strong?) but well done to those involved in bringing this and other classics to a new generation.

If you are experiencing crashes with this game, load through Steam instead of your desktop shortcut and select “Play F117A in DOSBox Daum”. This should clear up your problems.

Sid Meier has always made amazing games in any genre he turns his hand to, and this was a great simulator in it’s day. Like all early 3D games, it hasn’t aged well superficially, but the gameplay is still very much enjoyable today. I’d love to see a modern remake with improved graphics and physics, and a more in-depth & cinematic career mode (but retaining the random mission generator).

Filcher

Never played thief. I come from a childhood of Splinter Cell. At first I didn’t like it due to the weird mechanics like 2D sprite enemies and lack of a sound meter, lighting that doesn’t exactly look how it acts on the player. But it really does grow on you. A couple missions in and I had got the hang of the game (not to say that it was easy by any means). I love old-school stealth games that are super hard and I’m glad to say I ended up enjoying it. The story is pretty good too, even though it’s decently shallow. I hope to see a sequel at some point.

THE GOOD: Did you like Thief? You’ll love Filcher. It’s as simple as that. Long, dark shadows, sharp, moody lights, art-deco style, and film-noir tone, ambient sounds that bring nostalgic tears to your eyes, and Dark Engine-like mechanics that bring a familiar smile to your face.

THE NEUTRAL: Some may find the 2D sprite-based enemies and objects strange, but the atmosphere makes up for it.

THE BAD(ISH): At least the protagonist could have been voiced if nothing else. Because that’s all that’s missing from a complete, 100% experience, some good voice performance for greater immersion. Also, the auto-closing feature of the doors is a pretty questionable design choice for this type of game.

Master Spy

Master Spy

Yes, this game is difficult. It requires memorization and rapid-yet-precise controller movements, especially in the later stages. You will have to figure out some game mechanics via trial and error. When you fail, you will likely have to start over from a much earlier checkpoint.

This describes Master Spy. And Ninja Gaiden. And Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts. And Metal Gear.

In this game, you play as the Master Spy, a contract spook who can infiltrate past any security blockade. You can walk, jump, somersault jump, don your optical-camouflage coat, and crack computer terminals. Get spotted, and you lose.

Real player with 13.6 hrs in game

Pre-review advice: At least buy the soundtrack. Buy it no matter what. I sincerely doubt you’ll regret it.

Master Spy is primarily a precision platformer, secondarily a stealth platformer, and also really, really, really really reallyreally

REALLY hard.

You play as Master Spy, a (not very imaginative) master spy who excels in infiltrating places with the help of his invisibility trench coat. This comes in handy, as he is a pussy and will surrender to any man who glances at him sideways from behind a panel of reinforced glass, and also because the places he has to break into are [insert comparison to Fort Knox’s security here]. You’ve been hired to recover a data reel which is apparently so important that World War Three isn’t even the worst case scenario. Your contract will take you to many places, like mansions, yachts, assassin dens, and dangerous factories, and there are really interesting and well done cutscenes in between each to continue the story.
