Shadowcrawl: The Dark Pilgrimage

Shadowcrawl: The Dark Pilgrimage

This game is amazing. I have been testing it for months, and the game has never dissapointed. It’s difficult if you make it, it’s easy if you make it, and it’s all around an experience of growing in skill and becoming as powerful as possible. The replayability is there, the care is there, the polish is there, and the fun is definitely there. Keep going WKG!

Shadowcrawl is an interesting game.

It’s like if an 8bit version of Diablo had a baby with the necronomicon or some strange futuristic lovecraftian horror.

Pros

-There are a lot of features that don’t get noticed at first glance, every major astrological/occult holiday has a special effect.

-There is an incredible amount of content to this game, I have played it for about 24 hours, I have “beaten” the game in the most limited context, the truth is I could do 2 more replays through a prestige mode where you start over with newer harder enemies each time.

A lovely little morsel of a roguelike. You pick one character from a selection of 3 - warrior, thief, or wizard, each with a single unique gameplay mechanic - and traverse a maze in search of a key to take you to the next level. Along the way you encounter treasure and single-use items that enhance gameplay, beacons to light up the world, traps, and enemies. There is an xp collection mechanic. Levelling up increases your hitpoints by 1. For every hit you land on an enemy, they land a hit as well, so to beat them in an encounter requires you to have more hitpoints. If a beacon is activated, the surrounding zone of the maze is lit up; traps are made visible, certain types of item-giving blocks are activated, and enemies are turned into a cute collectible. Activating beacons however become a very strategic action later on when you encounter an enemy that is actually woken up rather than eliminated by light. Most levels seem to have two exits, so it adds a meta-game exploration aspect to the game (from my experience, there is no way to go back to previous levels).

Ultimate ADOM - Caverns of Chaos

Ultimate ADOM - Caverns of Chaos

Update 8/26/2021: The game has reached version 1.0, and it’s still not fun.

Overall performance and stability have improved somewhat. There tends to be less lag when moving around, and autoexplore is quite fast. On the other hand, inventory performance has gotten worse. Opening the inventory screen can take a few seconds and switching equipment a second.

With the introduction of continuous buff spells, this is possibly the easiest version yet. Most buff spells now last forever at the cost of reducing maximum PP by a percentage. For casters this doesn’t matter too much since PP growth seems to have gone through the roof. For non-casters this doesn’t matter too much since they are killing things without spells.

I record my playthroughs with Ultimate ADOM if you prefer a more visual format; take a look if you like.

I like Ultimate ADOM. I liked it during the Alpha, and I like it even more now. Much progress has been made, as more and more options are opening up, options like Limb Grafting! I shall be a Grafting God!

The first few times I played this game, I really had no clue what I was doing.

then it slowly started to click, now I’m having a great time playing this little game.

First off, this game should be needs to be played with a Controller, be it Steam or Xbox, it’s just easier. (I had problems with it not responding to my keystrokes on my laptop, controller use is near flawless (you’ll occasionally charge an arrow and have it drop as if it didn’t register the charge.)

The idea is you’ve been killed, but your soul escapes the underworld are you come back to life. you choose a “challenge” to keep your life, be it killing your killer, making money, or killing monsters, amongst other things… additional challenges unlock with subsequent playthroughs, you can only start with “Killing your killer” or “exchange your soul for another”

Armoured Commander II

Armoured Commander II

I strongly recommend Armoured Commander II to anyone who likes turn-based strategy games, games set in WW2 and/or roguelikes.

These are the things I love about the game:

1. Realism: Cannon shells can bounce off armour depending on the range, calibre and armour thickness. Weather conditions influence movement, hit and spotting chances. Units in cover are much harder to hit. Different weapon and ammo types are useful to different degrees depending on the situation. Your crewmen can not only be killed if your tank is destroyed. If you leave their hatches open, even a machine gun volley or sniper shot can wound or kill them. The performance of your crewmen can be affected by injury or shock. Each crewman who dies is gone for good.

A fairly unique and well-presented tank roguelike that does an amazing job of immersion in spite of being relatively simple in terms of scale and unit count. In most other tank games, you’re happy to have the biggest gun. In Armoured Commander II, you get to feel the pinch of having the biggest gun, because that means your tank barely has any ammo, especially HE. Oh and it probably doesn’t have very many machine guns.

And you want those machine guns and HE. By God, do you want them.

Armoured Commander and Armoured Commander II are the only tank games that I’ve played where the player is forced to care about MGs and HE because it isn’t laser-focused on tank duels. Quite frequently, you’ll find your tank under serious threat from infantry, ATGs, soft vehicles, etc. MGs and HE are useful both in the tactical hex battles and on the campaign map for purposes of recon-by-fire.

Haque

Haque

My favourite roguelike out there and one of my favourite games of all time. The team at Supertry studios have crafted a world I could quite happily play in for many more hundreds of hours to come.

Haque is a ready-made dungeon crawler that’s been spirited away and appropriated by a mystery host. Gameplay consists on navigating your way through dungeon levels and surviving what the host has left in waiting for you. Combat and movement is turn based with each turn having enough heft that one wrong move could get you killed. It can be incredibly unforgiving but incredibly rewarding when you learn how to escape making the same mistakes.

one of the better indie games out there and it makes me sad to see it closed to a small audience. the main issue is the filth and distortion settings that are preset on. you can easily turn those off for a closer to genuine new game feel and this is only a problem because it is preset with it. I don’t feel like it should be fully advertised with the settings like that at full mask because the customers for the product don’t understand that the settings are changeable. This game is very addicting and I hope there is still progress being made on it as the creator comes back frequently to make adjustments. this is also one of the few games that seems to be integrated well for an xbox controller and has a good mulitask range if you want to check or change things outside of the game . The mouse for me is barely used because the key controls are well laid out. It feels like a dnd manager in a way as it can be long campaigns that are challenging and require tons of micro managing in combining and selling items to get better ones. you also have to watch food sources and potions at a consistent basis. the characters are randomized completely each game you start. I do wish you could name them though, you may can, but the option isn’t easily laid out. the big bad at the end, has a style that seems to represent a whiny nerd that gets pisssed off about things you do well and taunts you throughout. the art style is simplistic, but bright and neon that draws the eyes real well outside of the preset settings that is. there is often a limited number of assets in game, but it is replicated where it is almost unnoticeable. the statistics are confusing at first because they share two divider boxes that I personally didn’t comprehend the connection at first. it could be easily solved by color changing the text for the ability scores. there is very few actual character interaction in the game other than combat, but the title makes that self explanatory. there are a set of revolving bosses that you’ll either have to die a few times or win a few times to see all of. the game goes for about 13 levels, I haven’t beaten the game, but have made to the end boss and died. I noticed that i seemed to started getting different classes after I made it to the end boss room. the game has alot of replay ability. a winning characters game can last up to 6-8 hrs, and there are chests at each boss phase you can use to put hand me down weapons in for your other characters making the game more loot driven. the pets in the game were useless to me though because i couldn’t exactly work their ai well. they have 3 setting defense, attack and cpu. they also tend to die fast in higher levels, but if you base a character on long range then they can still be useful as a distraction. the hardest way to win in leveling for me is through heavy magic or projectile users because the aim statistic they use makes finding armor more deficult for your needs as it often times lowers aim or speed.

Worth the 10 bucks and I’m going to try explaining why through a bad review

  1. First of all, the aesthetic for anyone that likes the look of old PC-98(?) or ancient MAC-OS, as the game is a tiny mix of both. I’m stuck on windows 10 because of my specs so that’s definitely refreshing.

  2. Probably not for everyone, but I got attached to the music after a while. The soundtrack is definitely gonna loop a few times during a full playthrough as that’s probably gonna be around 3 hours and the playlist is about 30 minutes long or so. not a musical expert (read: a fuckin idiot) so I don’t have much to say about it besides “it’s neat.”.

Real player with 58.3 hrs in game

Underneath the unique asthetic of an early windows operating system is a surprising deep, challenging and enjoyable rogue-like RPG.

I want to get some details out in front that I was confused by when I first bought the game: While the trappings of the game look like a ‘sim’ or ‘management’ game, it’s actually a straight-forward, single-character RPG with what ammounts to an early Final Fantasy active-time battle system. It is also indeed a rogue-like, where you’ll be dying a lot. BUT, if you have issues with rogue-likes (as I sometimes do), this game is WAY less unfair, and every playthrough has a decent chance of completing the game.

Scarlett’s Dungeon

Scarlett’s Dungeon

I enjoyed the game very much, it is relatively small but it is also the first game he did. Graphically I like it very much, it reminds me of my childhood and that gives bonus points: P

As I said the game itself is small but, he has given himself effort, you can walk into every House in the city and everyone has their own stories and I think that’s great.

If you are in a dungeon, you can always go back to the city to buy new items such as new swords or a new life, weapons there is no big choice, there are 3 different swords and there are currently no more weapons but I think more weapons would not be needed, for the 15 levels that’s enough.
