Koala Kids

Koala Kids is a perfect example of how a few simple ideas can be expanded upon and create an amazing game. Koala Kids is a game that knows what it wants to do and does that brilliantly. It’s not trying to be a crazy difficult 2D platformer or the world’s biggest game. It tries to be a charming and engaging platformer that makes you think at times and is the perfect game to play at the end of a long day. The game introduces a handful of items that each have their own use, and the game does a fantastic job of introducing how to use these items and then builds levels that allow you to use these items with each other. The soundtrack for this game is phenominal as well, it honestly had me bumping my head throughout the duration of me 100% the single player game. By completing levels and collecting money you unlock things that slowly fill up the “hub” i guess with a koala band, a house, and a garden, and it adds so much charm to an already charming game. This game is absolutely worth your time, and I highly recommend it.

I mean, it’s koalas. Who doesn’t like koalas, huh? Unless they’re wet of course but you won’t encounter that in this game. In this game, there are only wholesome house-building, music-playing, society-saving florist koalas. ;)
I’ve got this game for half the price ‘cause I had a coupon, so why not give it a try? Oy me, I can’t believe I’ve spent 7 hours on this game! It’s actually kinda fun if you just want to chill. The puzzle part is not exactly challenging, so you can turn your brain off for the most part but I didn’t really even expect it to be - it looks like a game you could play with your small kiddo (and looking at the other reviews, folk does so and very much enjoys it). I got neither offspring, nor friends that I’d love to come over for a swell local coop experience right now, so I got my coop achievements along with slowly acquiring the knowledge of how to fluently play for both characters at the same time, cool thing if you ever wanna start playing the piano - and that’s a fair deal for those 70 eurocents or even the full price of €1.6!

Moustache Mountain
A short and succint platforming game. Lovely pixel art and that is to be commended on. You are navigating a character that is burly + presumably has muscular legs that can propel him very far, but runs a 15 min mile. He is faster jumping/hopping than running…
Things that may aggravate you 1) having to restart from the very beginning after 3 mustaches are lost. Perhaps at say level 6, a check point, then level 12 another one? 2) Smoother/more reactive wall jumping. The concept of wall jumping is great as it offers more flexibility and variable game play into a platforming game. But when you wall jump in this game, you almost have to button mash to jump off the wall before you slide off the wall (because you slide very fast - gravity!) and into your most likely death. So it becomes less focusing on how to wall jump to a specific location, but more button mash and hope you make it after that. Although, enough gameplay, this should be remedied. 3) No way to replenish a lost mustache. I finished it with only one lost at the last level, but for the less capable gamer, having a way to replenish a lot life due to a learning mistake or mis-jump later on in the game would be nice. Granted, continuously play throughs will get you used to each map and you will be able to finish the game easily in the end.

I love to support indie developers, and so I pick up a lot of their games. Moustache Mountain is an example of this, and I tried really hard to like it. I really did. But even at a low price, the flaws in this game far outweigh the positives.
Now, let me be fair up front and say that I’m not a big platformer guy. I know, that spells bias right there, but I can get on board if there are some interesting mechanics. And that’s the problem here – the mechanics are just boring. One can argue that this is intended to be an NES-throwback, retro experience, but I more get the feel that the game is being limited by either the developer’s experience level or a game builder platform used to create it. In any case, while the levels are “randomized” (they’re not randomly generated, but merely picked at random from a pre-selected set), none of them are very interesting, and you beat the game if you get past level 15. I found a lot of the challenges to be cheaply frustrating, like having to jump around a ledge/overhang while you’re trying to bounce up the wall. Maybe my lack of platforming prowess is what was holding me back, but I usually had to try 10-12 times to complete this manuever, only to die on some spike once I got past it, and then start over from the beginning of the level again.

Double Dragon IV
Double Dragon… I played this game at a friend of mine who owned a Nintendo in the late 80s. Double Dragon 4 was for sale for around 5 euro with the same look and feel as the old game. This was for me a no-brainer to buy this game.
The Settings
In 1 word: crap. It is not so easy to get your keyboard settings done. It is not an intuitive system. Check very good what you are setting (keyboard or pad) and make sure you select the right input controller. The standard buttons are not common, so make sure to change it so you can play it your way.

Ah, Double Dragon IV, a game made by those guys that love to make amazing fighting style games with amazing character designs and infinite combos. Just by booting this game, you can immediately notice that ArcSys did their best to bring back a dead game.
Double Dragon IV has the same plot as all other Double Dragon games; two dudes fight some baddies that kidnapped their girlfriend… The artstyle here is amazing and makes you feel all fuzzy inside, just remembering all those crazy white nights you’ve spent beating Williams and Lindas in Double Dragon II for the NES… Think of this game as a spiritual successor of Double Dragon II.

My Table Review :
| About | Rate |
| Art/graphic | The art is unique and still good to play even in 2018 |
| Gameplay | It’s a skill shooter game, not really a skill but if you play normal mode its really already good for a chalange. |

My mum comes home hours after her disappearance. “Did you get me anything?” I ask. “I got you a few computer games…” she remarks as she trails of into the kitchen to put away her shopping. Could it be the new warcraft game? No that expansion comes out next month. She must have preordered it! This is going to be great! I scrounge through the plastic bags only to find a “100 games in a one” disc in that generic plastic sleeve that looks to be designed with word 2008. God knows from what cyberpunk pirating underground she gets these dodgy discs which are probably chinese botnet builders but I neverthless reluctantly try it.

Retro Classix: Bad Dudes
Classic arcade beat’em’up - fully ported with 2player capabilities, ninja punching nostalgia and the ability to feed in coins for lives without loosing all your pocket money… this time…

The real Double Dragon 3, as far as I’m concerned. This game is a ton of fun and legendarily cheesy. For my ninja game fix, I personally prefer this over the Shinobi series.

S.U.B.
Small and simple co-op but very fun

Small co-op station game.
1 submarine, 2 players, 4 stations (steering, weapons, scanner, smelter), 1 level. essential, this feels like a minimalist version of Catastronauts that is also less exciting. You navigate the deep looking for keycards and scrap metal while fending off laser sharks, and when you enter the enemy base, it turns out they’re in another castle, and the game ends. Mind you, the concept isn’t that bad, and if the devs had put some effort into making a campaign and different enemies, it could be a lot better; but as it is, If you want to do couch co-op, I recommed springing for a better game that has more variety.

Space Debris
This is a great party game for rock-blasting retro space fun. I love the drop in/drop out feature and the massive number of gamepads supported.
There’s also a bit more to it than you might expect:
Several ships to choose from, each with their own unique style
Bring dead allies back to life
Collect space dust to power up
Collect debris from destroyed alien ships to unlock new ships and upgrades
Play it now! you know you want to.

Double Dragon Trilogy
At this point in the history of the franchise, you either “get” Double Dragon, or you don’t. This is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in it’s purest and simplest form. You can punch, kick, jump, jump kick, and do a scant few other moves. The enemies you’ll face all have personality, but it’s of the behavior-based variety. The game is challenging, particularly on the Original and Expert difficulties, but can be finished in a short amount of time… even shorter if you become particularly skilled at the game and the nuances in it’s play.

In theory this collection should be a great experience. That’s what I thought when I booted it up. As soon as I tried to adjust the resolution, the game proceeded to crash, forced me to verify files and turn off my virus protection as a content lock occured.
Once I got it back up and running with controls set comfortably on my 360 pad, it worked well. Well enough for what feels like a lazy attempt to wrap three arcade roms into a stand-alone executable.
The Time and Score text overlay is really weird and doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the visuals. The options feel kind of barebones, there’s no intro videos or explanations or anything for any of the games, nothing. People coming into this without knowing about the games will have no idea that you can do super moves, like hitting punch and jump together in DD1 for the game-breaking backwards elbow. Or how DD2’s controls are odd. Or how you can flipping run in DD3 by double tapping move (the previous two games didn’t have it, so unless you did this by accident how would you know?).
