It’s a unique auto generated game. Missons tend to be often very similar but there is always different glitches. A unique touch I saw was each auto generated game has it’s own little backstory for why your playing the “game” like every video game. The only glitch I see is with the flying mission which is if you try to barrell roll it doesnt work then u cant shoot and in shooting as planes sometimes if u die u never respawn/get the restart u should. Through the ramble I would say it’s a good time killer if you just want good casual fun to kill stress tho some of the hard mode glitches uggh lol I’d wait for a discount but like $15 vs th e current $20

I really wanted to like and recommend this game, but I cannot.

On the surface, the idea sounds great. Mix and match pieces of different retro games/genres and play through whatever wackiness gets created.

In reality, the game overall fails to deliver. Individual mashes take at most 10 minutes to play through, but rarely did I ever spend that much time in any one “game”. Instead, some are so easy (even on a hard setting) that you’re in and out in a matter of 30 seconds or less. The game description even calls out that some mash ups easy to win, some will be impossible. That’s acceptable given the premise.

Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria

Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria

This is yet another retro-pixel 8 bit game with a few notable differences. It doesn’t seem to have been made with the terrible RPG-Maker engine which does make the game slightly more appealing. It’s written slightly better (but not that great) than most retro JRPGs trying to cash in on the success of Final Fantasy.

Regardless, this is still just a cash grab driven by nostalgia, the graphics are very lazy retro-pixel (it’s 2018 now, let pixel graphics die).

I would give this 5/10 for not being a rubber stamp RPG-Maker game, but it’s still completely derivative. Go play Final Fantasy if you want this kind of retro experience.

Dragon Warrior (NES) meets EarthBound (SNES), in a great meshing of gameplay that will have you hooked for hours.

I myself prefer the 8bit mode to enjoy this game, as being in my 30s I’ve been raised on the 8bit genre - but you can enjoy this hidden gem in 8 or 16 bits (music and gfx toggleable seperately in the config screen).

This game is addictive if you liked the old dragon warrior games on the NES, you’ll love this. I won’t spoil the fun, but I’ve gotten through the 1st two caves and found the 3rd one (and died…). Luckily, I had my progress recorded on the imperial scrolls of… well, you get the point. It’s just like Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series (with a splash of EarthBound’s humor on the monsters/battles and hidden stuffs). Secrets items abound so do look around. Should be a fun play-through for anyone with a hankering for some more 8 (or 16) bit games.

A lot of the time displayed on record is having the game open in the background or waiting for npcs to move out of my fricking way.

Still, it took me almost 80 hrs to finish the game on hard difficulty and I still have something left to do, if I can muster the energy that is. Which brings me to my main point. This is a barely positive review. I couldn’t bring myself to give it a negative one after thoroughly enjoying the gameplay for many hours, but oh boy did this game seriously outstay it’s welcome.

When this game talks about how it is inspired by classic JRPGs, it really shows in how both the game is written and stylized. And, overall, I really enjoyed it as a whole but an informative review has to be informative:

The Plot:

As of now (I’m at about the midgame slightly above lvl 30), the plot of the game is easily its weakest point. It might turn you off and while it seems to be building up to something quite interesting all in all with those races being banished from each other to their specific realms between gods but so far, the plot is about an evil king and his generals who are turning evil pillaging, stealing and its your job to try and stop them.

The game is more retro, although the picture is very ordinary, but there are many small eggs. Personally, I prefer this kind of game without hints to fumble on my own. Suggestions 1. Increase the minimap 2. Keyboard shortcut 3. I want to see the number of people online.

Breath of Death VII

Breath of Death VII

The Ugly:

  • The character portraits: I can only hope they were intentionally going for that pre-teen deviantArt feel, but being ironically bad doesn’t mean it’s not still horrid. Comparatively, the pixel art for enemies is generally pretty nice.

–———

The Good:

  • Fixed Encounter System. Each area has a set number of random encounters. After you fight that many, no more will appear as you walk around, although you can still seek out as many enemies as you wish through the “Fight” menu option. I found myself often simply exploiting the system by doing all 20 Fights that a late-game dungeon had, right next to the MP-restore point, and then going about my merry way through the dungeon totally risk free.

What Is This Game?

Breath of Death is a retro-styled RPG solo campaign game. It features a fast turn-based combat, graphics reminiscent of 8-16bit RPGs, many dungeons and locations to delve and many more features. Its also a parody of other RPGs that came before, hence the the ridiculously long title that is apparently part of a series of games. I can’t imagine what game they could possibly be poking fun at with the title. The game takes many chances to poke fun at itself, at other RPGs and the characters as well. They also like to break the 4th wall from time to time too. But it all fits into the universe somehow without feeling awkward or thrown in. The campaign itself is around 4-6 hours with additional modes and difficulty levels to keep you challenged

Dungeon of Trials

Dungeon of Trials

Fun and nice game that still needs more development, but I’ll thumbs up anyway for its price and because we can see how much love and effort creators have put into it. I must mention though, I’ve refunded since it was glitchy (a bunch of blue lines in between tiles) and for some other small stuff that imo should be in the game from the start: options in menu to go fullscreen or even to exit game are non existent, and the guild improvement menu is lame - you have to enter each option just to learn what it is and how much it costs.

STORY: 10/20

You have been given charge of a guild, a poor guild that needs funds and building up. You delve deep into dungeons and dark caves to explore for treasures and gold, so you are able to make your guild the greatest guild there is.

You get a little story at the beginning of the game, and that’s about it. I did not come across any cutscenes or anything whilst roaming areas to bring you, the player, into the world more, shame really. I think the devs really need to revisit this aspect.

Loser Reborn

Loser Reborn

What?!

  • There isn’t enough variety of class options. There is Knight/Samurai, Wizard/Wu-jen & Rogue/Ninja to bring to a total of six. Problem is there is no differentiation between, say, a Knight and a Samurai. Only the starter skill is different. And the usual normal class traits don’t really apply here–a Warrior/Samurai in Loser Reborn is a “supporting class” and Rogue/Ninja are more of a “attacking class”.

  • Throw-away plot with typical plot-holes of anime.

  • Equipment Balance Issues: MC can be K’O in one hit. To explain: equipment can be either conducive or combustible–meaning you have to be very careful how much “weakness” stacking you are doing. Combat is about memorization; for example: one class is more inclined to use fire-tribute skills than physical attacks or a foe is more resilient to physical damage but more acceptable to magical damage.

I can tell that the developer of this game put in so much love and effort into this game.

This short, yet extremely difficult rpg game is basically inspired by the isekai trope of magically teleporting the player into a fantasy world on the brink of annihilation. There are basically three classes: Knight, Mage, and Rogue. The Knight specializes in tanking for his team mates, the Mage uses spells, and the Rogue is fast and focuses on debuffs. The goal of your mission is to defeat the Dark Lord who is threatening to destroy the entire kingdom or world thing. You are assisted by your harem party of brave heroes to defeat him.

Mango Mischief

Mango Mischief

The four protagonists: Sprig, Marion, Merrow, and Arach

Mango Mischief is a throwback to a simpler time - the 16-bit era of video gaming - when JRPGs used (and abused) cliché storylines as vehicles for showing off interesting battle mechanics, difficult dungeons and monsters, complex puzzles, character leveling systems, and customizability through skills, upgrades, and gear.

_Is it time to go on a magic quest to save the world - a quest that only YOU can complete (with the help of three other party members who have different skill sets, of course)?

Do you need to collect several inanimate objects that serve no purpose other than to accidentally help the antagonist at the end of the game?

Is the antagonist merely a puppet of the true final boss (who has multiple forms)?_

Eh, maybe. Or maybe not.

The map at the beginning of Mango Mischief, showing off the early areas of the game

Mango Mischief attempts to straddle the line between paying homage to the tried-and-true tropes of JRPGs, while also parodying the memes of role-playing games with plot twists and comedy.

Self-referential humor and fourth wall breaks augment the narrative and interactions in this game, without detracting from the core gameplay:

  • Open exploration of a huge, diverse world, full of quests and monsters and loot

  • Flexibility in leveling up desired classes and gaining new abilities along the way

  • The freedom to optimize character builds and complete dungeons in any order

  • Tons of weapons, armor, accessories, and items that allow for a variety of playstyles

  • A turn-based battle system involving elemental strengths and weaknesses, an assortment of buffs, debuffs, and status ailments, and monsters that scale with your progress, to keep battles fresh, interesting, and challenging

  • Just enough random encounters to annoy players who prefer visible encounters, and just enough visible encounters to annoy players who prefer random encounters

  • At least a few interesting NPCs who aren’t merely mindless drones created for the sole purpose of furthering the plot of your special story

was expecting an retro jrp. it is! in fact it is so retro that i want to punch a person right next to me and throw my controller in the corner… didnt know i still could rage at my age, but watermelon showed me i can :D

why is it frustrating? for me its simple the minigames that you need to complete, to keep progressing. for example the sliding plattforms… i was so happy to finish finaly the magic school and i thought that would be the peak of frustration in in the game. i was wrong. at the last chapter you have to do this bullshit again and this time it sets you even further back if failed. so you have to run all around the basement and the staircases again and again if you fail the plattform. (wouldnt be a problem, but the movement in the game is realy bad for this. tried 3 different controllers and keyboard also, it didnt make any difference)

Hello everyone. First off, the time shown is wrong. I have at least 100+ hours in this game totally. Second off, let me mention the minor bugs with this game and the one bad one.

The worst bug is the Zephyr map bug. I wrote a short walkthrough that may bypass this bug. Please check the guide page for it or below. As for the other bugs, there minor and do not effect the gameplay very much. One of the minor bugs it has is the disappearing menu wheel, which happens sometimes during battles. The way to fix it is just push esc or some other button on your keyboard. This is probably has to do with the joypad on your pc.

Romancing SaGa 2™

Romancing SaGa 2™

I’m finding it difficult to review Romancing SaGa 2. I ended up loving it, but only after I had read up on some key information about the game mechanics that would have taken my dumb ass forever to figure out without help, potentially long enough for me to quit early. I’m going to go through a couple of the things that I found to be important knowledge, so this is going to be a pretty ranty review.

The music is excellent. In my 150+ hours of playing this game I never got sick of hearing it.

The story felt a bit difficult to stay too invested in. While the open nature of the game and the generation /inheritance system is unique for its time and are good gameplay elements, the sheer number and varying lifespans of each emperor/party member means there’s not a lot to follow on a personal level (which may have been the intent?).

Real player with 157.5 hrs in game

tl;dr SaGa games were flawed, epic, open ended, obscure gems way ahead of their time that few westerners got to play back in the days and that you should absolutely try if you’re into (J)RPGs.

My first encounter with them was in the mid nineties with Romancing SaGa 3. Coming from the likes of Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, I was hella confused by it. Most of the world was freely accessible from the start and I kept going from villages to towns and from ships to islands into dark caves and dungeons which inevitably led to what seemed like invincible mighty opponents.
