Bionic Battle Mutants

Bionic Battle Mutants

Warning: Based on single player content only.

Game runs fine under Windows 10, not a single bug apart from texture layer issue on one level (very minor thing).

Enjoyed the campaign (around 12 to 17 hours), the few problems inherent to isometric view and line of sight/visibility in this type of games are pretty well delt with here:

Wall transparency/visible line of sight/visible covers are all one icon away during battles.

The AP system, a few attack options and consumables are what you get to work with, clear and enough options for a few different layouts.

BBM is an interesting take on turn-based combat with a small squad of warriors. I like the graphics style and the customization options. The game is not too deep or complicated, and is good fom some relaxed tactics for a couple of hours.

You team members can die in a fight, and reviving costs quite some resources, so it pays off to play carefully and avoid getting hit or charged, since most enemies are tough melee fighters

Good thing is you can replay missions to collect some more loot for the next upgrade.

Light Crusader is an isometric action-adventure game. It was developed by Treasure and published by Sega, released in 1995. I think it was their very last game on the system, at this point they were rushing to have it done before the market is gone, not unlike Alien Soldier. They say that they made all the maps in a very short period of time. 16 Megabit goodness. 4 save slots.

The game that you have here is nothing more than emulation of Sega Genesis version. Also, little tip, you can change language used for dialogue through debug cheatcode menu.

I can’t get the game to work at all. Level codes don’t seem to work and can’t determine what keyboard controls do what. Was very much looking forward to playing this classic from the past.

Keeps reverting to map view, which then doesn’t allow further game play. Only command that works is space bar which then restarts the game.

Old school classic. Rather unforgiving, and some parts are rather trial-and-error because you often can’t tell what a switch is going to do until you flick it, then you realise you’ve made part of the map inaccessible…but that’s just how games were back then.

A nice, cerebral puzzle game from the late 80s. Hundreds of levels guaranteeing plenty of gameplay time.

I’d only ever played the Atari and Amiga versions before this, and whilst I do still prefer them because they have better sound and graphics…the DOS version does run a little slower which is arguably a good thing.

Landstalker is diagonal-only isometric action-RPG. Or action-adventure, I get confused by these genre definition. It was developed by Climax Entertainment (don’t mistake it for other Climax names companies) and published by Sega. And yea, Climax were also created to help with the first two Shining games, so there is some Shining infulence in this game. No, not part of franchise. It was released in 1992 in Japan and in 1993 it got to the West. 4 save slots. 16 whole Megabit ROM.

Fun fact: US and French versions of the game actually had ending tweaked to make it more like happy ending. Though I still prefer the original “oh well” one.

The Final Battle

Genre - Retro Text and Picture based RPG

Used to love this game on my Atari ST (with higher quality images) as a kid.

It’s nice to be able to play it again, for the nostalgia factor. I was never able to complete it without a full guide. Luckily I can’t remember much about the puzzles though.

The controls were confusing at first, but think I get them now (use single/double/right click and drag and drop). If you lose a party member you will need to reload or restart, and it is easy to lose them (including not saving them quick enough at the start).

Betrayal

Betrayal

A WEB OF INTRICATE POSSIBILITIES – BUT FAIR PLAY ISN’T ONE OF THEM!

A new barrel of fine Welsh ale had just been broached. The royal palace’s smoky dining hall resounded in cheery voices. To one side of the top table a harpist and a minstrel were struggling to be heard above the commotion caused by two dogs snarling over a bone in the corner.

Eating slowly, I leant forward to catch the breathless whisper of a rival knight.

“They came in at a run, baying like wolves, four wild-eyed barbarians ready to cut, gouge, pulverize and kill anything that moved.”

That news was indeed music to my ears. My forces’ attack on his wealthiest town had met with success. Financially weakened, militarily broken, and politically bankrupt, he could no longer hold influence at Court.

So long as no evidence of my wrong doings remained. So long as the Gods blessed the crops of my harvest. So long as the rumors of the capture of my brother were true. The throne was mine.

I’ve cheated, lied, spied and slaughtered. The fruits of Betrayal are mine.

  • The West Marches is a corrupt land ruled by immoral leaders. You are one of four Knights with a lust for power, and in the pursuit of power, the end justifies the means.

  • The bloodiest battles yield the greatest spoils. Strategically extend your domain, reduce your rivals’ resources, and tighten your stranglehold on the peasants of the land.

  • Betrayal involves a long, hard, ruthless struggle, starting with the economic management of your towns and cultivation of your lands, culminating in the honing of your military strategy and execution of political subterfuge.

  • The towns provide your power base. Manage the successfully, and harvest the wealth needed to buy, bribe and fight for ultimate power.

  • Develop a mastery of political subterfuge, gaining places for your Courtiers at the palaces of the King and Bishop, ready for the coup which will make you the master of Betrayal.

Mystic Towers

Mystic Towers

I have only played the demo version that included only the first tower long time ago and ever since then I wanted to get my hand on the full game.

I really liked the graphic, the isometric layout, the puzzles, the unique mechanics of thirst and hunger and the look of the weird monsters.

In Mystic Towers You play as a wizard called Baron Baldric who is tasked to destroy 12 towers that are responsible for the monsters attacking Rimm village.

In this game, you must find in each tower a generator bomb which is the only thing that is capable of destroying the monster generator which is located on the 3rd floor inside each tower in order to stop from the monsters respawning after they are killed and then kill all the remaining monsters in the tower.

“Just one more monster!” Mystic Towers, ah what a masterpiece. I used to play this game so much as a kid, and you know, there weren’t many games at the time that I could say that about. This one draws you in all easy; the first tower is a push-over. Then comes the second tower; you need to do a little thinking in this one. By the third tower, you are at wits end; never knowing which corner a monster will be, never sure of where the next bit of food might be laying in order to save the rest of your starving, dragged out, now poisoned body. This game is worth the price tag, and if you have the reflexes and brains to get to the last tower, I will personally mail you a delicious loaf of stale, pixelated tower bread. Stay retro my friends.

Really enjoyed playing through Binger Ninja!

I love the aesthetics of the game as well as the tongue in cheek humour. The music and visuals really do make you feel as though you are back playing a game boy game.

Seems like the developers have really hit the niche that they were going for which translates to a fun game :)

So, you’ve read the description of the game and now you’re here looking for the truth. Watch the video posted above, it’ll give you an intro to the game, gameplay and my thoughts on the game.

Binger Ninja is an interesting oddity in the sense that has way too many mechanics, charm and clarity to be only $1 (USD). I was not expecting so many polished systems, driving narrative and fun gameplay. Do you fancy yourself a ninja? What to crawl through vents and hide behind plants? Do you enjoy attacking people unmercifully with food? Are you hungry right now? A simple yes to any of these questions tells me that Binger Ninja is the game for you. Pick it up now and tell your friends as well.

Lumo brings 3D isometric gameplay with a twist. Coupling a insane amount of secrets and puzzles in it’s diverse levels.

Text:

As always, watch the video for the best possible impression of the game.

While clearly aimed at a younger audience, the game tries to bridge this by adding a ton of secrets and “of the beaten track” methods of playing the game, which it very much succeeds in.

The levels are spanning, and while simple on the surface (and mechanically not that hard) the game allows for those younger to enjoy a fun and interesting game… while also stuffing the game to the brim with references and nostalgic throwbacks for those older gamers.

For me it really was a blast from the past to play Lumo, one of the earliest games I played was Equinox for the SNES, and it was a game I liked to play, and since I stucked with my SNES for many years I got to play Equinox a lot. I then bought a Wii in 2010, and hoped to jump into the next isometric puzzle adventure, only to find out the genre had gone the way of the dodo.

So why did I like the genre? It is mainly that the challenge in the genre lies in your perception and interpitation of the room, with a good level design this can be very tricky to find out, to the point that you might feel a death is unfair, and the next moment have some clarity on what went wrong, and look at the room in a new way. This has been done well in Lumo too.
