River City Ransom: Underground

River City Ransom: Underground

Hindsight review:

Hear me out. Don’t let my hours fool you. Despite having spent 80 hours pre-launch as a backer tester, I’ve spent most of my time in the Training Arena to study the game and figure out how I could improve it if the promised mod support does come through. I admit I was a little too hyped, and I let bias take over seeing how far they had come with my own eyes. I let the game settle now. Well, honestly I never felt comfortable recommending this to others because I knew there was some serious flaws, and the game needs some serious polish. I really had fun playing through the game, but some overall design decisions aren’t going to change, which ruin my overall impression.

If literally any other game studio developed this game, it might be fun. Welcome to the poochie the dog of videogames, RCRU.

It’s a terrible game, and baffling design choices and EXTREMELY poor patch management have squandered what could have been otherwise a very, very good game. For the record, Patch 13 is coming out soon, solving problems such as the flawed police system, and some big bugs, which is great.

So why am I voting this game down?

Go read any other review of this game, and you’ll hear the same thing, “Good, but doesnt live up to its potential. Also bugged as the dickens. Very Unbalanced. Pointless RPG mechanics. Lame genuinely cringe inducing meta humor, and pointless references that show the devs cant grow up, and move away from the 90’s.”

Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps And Beans

Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps And Beans

Bud Spencer and Terence Hill are movie actors fomous in the 70-80s for their roles in action-comedy movies.

Slaps & Beans is a tribute to the duo. The game tries (and somewhat succeeds) to transfer the atmosphere and the comedy of the movies in a videogame’s world.

The game is a scrolling beat' em up: a genre that allows a digital representation of the unusual comical fight style of Bud & Terence.

The graphic style is a well realized pixel-art, full of details and references to the movies. This style enforces that sense of retro which is appropriate in a product inspired by 70-80s' characters.

In the discussion thread belonging to this game somebody started to rage asking why oh why we have to accept such games when Street Rage 4 is already out. For the answer head over to the wiki for Carlo Pedersoli and Mario Girotti and check what they accomplished under the nicknames of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. They had their own movies but the majority of the viewers like (and watch up to this date) the journeys they made as a duo.

Now, Slaps And Beans is an homage. Interestingly, it has its own story but each stage makes you recognise one or several of the duo’s films. In a nutshell, our heroes participate in a movie shoot and when trying to pick up their money for the job they find themselves in the middle of a kidnapping. Terence is immediately concerned about the well-being of the kidnapped lady while Bud only agrees to the rescue as he firmly believes their money is, too, kidnapped.

The real Double Dragon 3, as far as I’m concerned. This game is a ton of fun and legendarily cheesy. For my ninja game fix, I personally prefer this over the Shinobi series.

Reminds me of the 90s big time. I remember seeing the Sega Genesis version and I wanted to try this game out since I heard the Arcade version is superior but I can tell you the hit boxes on the enemies are rough and it can be completed in 30 minutes. Its fun at first but the bosses hit boxes are terrible.

Classic 90s fighting video game! Tonns of enemies, SNES graphics and cool soundtrack! This game brought me forgotten memories of 90s, when we played video games on TV with friends. Good old times! ^^

About the game:

I completely loved the amount of enemies (classic video games nostalgy again!) and how different they are. Men, women, dogs, Huge Bosses! And they are coming in waves, jumping, trying to catch you, attack you with knives and other weapons. And my charcter can also grab some enemy and throw him to incoming wave! I totally loved this feature! More than that, slain enemies are leaving money, food and weapons on the ground, so I can use all the dropped weapons.

Double Dragon IV

Double Dragon IV

Double Dragon… I played this game at a friend of mine who owned a Nintendo in the late 80s. Double Dragon 4 was for sale for around 5 euro with the same look and feel as the old game. This was for me a no-brainer to buy this game.

The Settings

In 1 word: crap. It is not so easy to get your keyboard settings done. It is not an intuitive system. Check very good what you are setting (keyboard or pad) and make sure you select the right input controller. The standard buttons are not common, so make sure to change it so you can play it your way.

Ah, Double Dragon IV, a game made by those guys that love to make amazing fighting style games with amazing character designs and infinite combos. Just by booting this game, you can immediately notice that ArcSys did their best to bring back a dead game.

Double Dragon IV has the same plot as all other Double Dragon games; two dudes fight some baddies that kidnapped their girlfriend… The artstyle here is amazing and makes you feel all fuzzy inside, just remembering all those crazy white nights you’ve spent beating Williams and Lindas in Double Dragon II for the NES… Think of this game as a spiritual successor of Double Dragon II.

Double Dragon Trilogy

Double Dragon Trilogy

At this point in the history of the franchise, you either “get” Double Dragon, or you don’t. This is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in it’s purest and simplest form. You can punch, kick, jump, jump kick, and do a scant few other moves. The enemies you’ll face all have personality, but it’s of the behavior-based variety. The game is challenging, particularly on the Original and Expert difficulties, but can be finished in a short amount of time… even shorter if you become particularly skilled at the game and the nuances in it’s play.

In theory this collection should be a great experience. That’s what I thought when I booted it up. As soon as I tried to adjust the resolution, the game proceeded to crash, forced me to verify files and turn off my virus protection as a content lock occured.

Once I got it back up and running with controls set comfortably on my 360 pad, it worked well. Well enough for what feels like a lazy attempt to wrap three arcade roms into a stand-alone executable.

The Time and Score text overlay is really weird and doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the visuals. The options feel kind of barebones, there’s no intro videos or explanations or anything for any of the games, nothing. People coming into this without knowing about the games will have no idea that you can do super moves, like hitting punch and jump together in DD1 for the game-breaking backwards elbow. Or how DD2’s controls are odd. Or how you can flipping run in DD3 by double tapping move (the previous two games didn’t have it, so unless you did this by accident how would you know?).

Has a heart of fire!

A simple but engaging action-platformer

with a rewarding score and ranking system.

A mix of Wonder Boy III and classic Castlevania.

The good

  • Everything looks adorable, great spritework

  • A superb soundtrack that gets better each stage

(It’s worth buying the soundtrack!)

  • Varied, thrilling boss battles

  • Dragon protagonist

  • Going from F- rank to S+ feels amazing

The bad

  • Most of the story had to be cut sadly

  • Quite short, but priced appropriately

Gourmet Warriors is a translated port of a classic SNES Beat ‘Em up called Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou. Up until this point, this surreal food-themed brawler - made by the same team that gave us Cho Aniki - has been a Japan exclusive.

You play as one of three characters, the big wrestler Bonjour, the sexy martial artist Madmoiselle and the sci-fi ninja Tres Bien. At first blush, Gourmet Warriors is a standard 16-bit brawler. You walk from left to right and fight enemies as you

go. You’ve got your basic punch combos, throws, flying kicks and dash strikes.
