Serious Scramblers

After almost 20 hours of playing this game, I find it in 3 words to describe it.

Marvellous, Exciting, Enjoyable.

Oh, you read that right. Those 3 words summed it up.

[GRAPHIC]

Okay, thing is, this game is really enjoyable. But how it is enjoyable? First the retro vibe and simple graphics are already mesmerizing. I mean, in this age now, how many of us can still enjoy some good old-school style game. This one does, so it’s great!

  • CHECKED!

[MUSIC]

Music wise, absolutely catchy and melodic. Sure, it’s a bit repetitive but old-school games are like that. Plus, it’s not some dull and boring musics but rather, it fits the gameplay very well. Personally, I like it. And importantly, it brings me back to my younger days when I was playing those NES games. So yeah, it’s cool, good and memorable.

first impressions (updated with new info):

  • great pixel art and music.

  • gets you on the edge of your seat in the way a good arcade-type game would.

  • fast-paced, no waiting around to restart your next fall.

  • a very important element (that you can go from one edge of the play area to the other a la Pacman) isn’t taught to you except as a loading screen type tip (which I didn’t see until after I’d learned it by myself), so I figured you couldn’t go to the sides at first. this made some jumps that would otherwise have been easy hat frustratingly appear impossible to avoid. I kinda wish that info were relegated to an info tab or something in the menu, rather than as an obscure tip.

Mousebound

Mousebound

Upon initially opening Mousebound I was immediately thrown into a difficult and non-apologetic world. Every level, every sequence, and every jump constantly has the player trying their hardest to apply different movements to try and figure out a way to achieve that next jump. While at some points it make you want to scream, at the same time you are brought into a beautiful world with fun physics and mechanics that make the player feel that with every jump and every attempt they are bettering themselves and building upon their last attempt to finally beat it this time. Mousebound is a fun open-world puzzle game that I truly enjoy and highly recommend.

Like Monkey Ball but no monkey and more stress. Fun level design keeps each section fresh while still adding the pressure of other Foddian games like Getting Over It and PogoStuck. Overall, pretty good :)

*In some cases it’s fair to review a game after 1 hour of playtime, definitely not in this case - so forget about ‘those’ negative reviews!

I estimate I needed around 5 - 7.5 hours before I could really like this game. Making a comparison with Super Meat Boy: yes, it feels as if Meat Boy has ‘brakes’, it feels as if Rude Bear has ‘icy feet’, but on a scale from 1 - 10: I got used to it = 8. Other than that, really solid platforming, nicely fast-paced…with even a 150% Game Speed option in Practice Mode - or 50% if you feel to.

YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

Another game suffering bad reviews about sh.itty control or unfair mechanics from people that are not good enough and don’t try to improve. Don’t listen to players complaning about bugs, controls or whatever, this is some whine covering their unability to train and improve when they face a difficult game.

Yes, Super Rude Bear Resurrection is difficult. BUT it comes with a unique mechanic allowing you to make the game easier when you die. In fact, the more you die, the easier it gets since your corpse stays on the floor and allows you to progress further. If a trap kills you, it also gets destroyed. For example, if you die on spikes, your body will become a platform and you won’t have to worry about these anymore. If you are not skilled enough but have enough patience, you can eventually fill the world with corpses and reach the end. Not the funniest way to play I admit but if one level is really destroying you, you can beat it and continue your progression.

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends is a well-designed, fun, colourful and ambient rage game that stretches the lines of human sanity, determination and pain. On the surface, Pogostuck looks and breathes like a bouncy, Getting over It-esque, online, fun challenging game; however, this fantasy is destroyed after around 25 hours of playtime. In total, the first map took me around 50 hours to beat, which can be visualised below:

0-3 hours: “This is pretty hard but I’m going to beat it.”

4-10 hours: “This is kind of hard but I’m making progress.”

Is this the start or the end?

Oh caterpillar, hold me friend!

I’m soaring high right through the sky,

see soaring beans this must be dreams.

I pogo this, I pogo that,

I’m longing for my brand new hat!

I bonk and yeet,

land on my feet,

I Alt F4,

come back for more.

I ‘member grapes, I ‘member trees,

but not the bees I beg you please!

The blade of life, it does it’s thing,

like I do mine, I hear it swing…

Scoot Kaboom and the Tomb of Doom

Scoot Kaboom and the Tomb of Doom

I really love the approach of the one giant map! Couple that with a great variety of environmental hazards, clever level design and the cruel but necessary process of learning through death - and you’ve got Scoot Kaboom!

I’m having a great time so far 3

UPDATE:

I’ve now completed it, and what a really wholesome game. Really nice design of the “traps” and as you go deeper into the tomb the combination of several mechanics at once really cause a fun and challenging experience! The ending was fun, and I love how there are a bunch of unlockables, various game modes and accessibility settings if the game is too difficult.

Real player with 3.4 hrs in game

Great old style platformer with a nice gradual ramp up in difficulty. I really love that you can slow down the game for challenging sections if you want to, for as little or as much of the game as you want, and to the speed percentage you want. I’m hugely impressed with this design! It allows you to keep the game challenging to your level so it stays fun and not either a grind, or something you have to give up on.

Different playable characters and game modes add a lot of replayability factor - and the zoom to see the whole game feature is really clever.

Bread & Fred

Bread & Fred

“Bread & Fred: Climb the Crest” is a challenging platform in which you will have to cooperate with your partner to be able to jump and climb to the top of the mountain. These adorable penguins will go through a tedious and exasperating journey that requires precision with every jump, and each time you land you’ll be one step further from the target, but one step closer to mastering the extreme platforming.

#### Penguin Mechanics: -Swing to reach distant platforms!

Attached to each other not only means that you fall together, you can also make good use of the rope and propel your partner beyond what any penguin could have ever jumped. Make sure you hold tight to the ground or you will both be thrown into the abyss.

-Hold on to walls as long as you can!

The penguin’s little hands aren’t very good, but you can hang on a wall with your partner for a few seconds. Be careful, penguins normally weight a lot, so you won’t last long, use it quickly in order to move between platforms.

Legends say that with these few skills, there are heroes who have managed to reach the top. Will you be capable?

Each fall will hurt and will be very difficult to overcome, but it is a learning process that you all will have to go through. Think carefully about each jump and master the penguin skills to reach the end of the path.

For the craziest, “Bread & Fred” includes a speedrun mode so you can compete and be crowned the best penguins on the planet.

The mountain awaits you, complete your mission. Cooperate with each other and you will be able to go very far in the mountain, but try not to die on the process. Good luck!

Very well designed grapple-platformer with a great engine and emphasis on speedrunning.

You have your left and right movement buttons with 3 actions buttons; grapple (fixed 45 degree angle), jump and dash. The level designs are varied and will force you to learn all the ins and outs of your skill set; you can double jump, reel yourself towards the grapple location with or without dash, run/dash/jump on water when you have enough speed and/or good landing angle - these are just some examples of the diversity you can expect from your abilities.

Hardcore platformer with grappling hooks and no speed limit, could it possibly be any better?!

The challenge, the competition, the rewarding feeling of accomplishment: very few games give you all of these at once.

And the moment you realize there is global ranking with replays of every single record to learn from, this game is set to be the heaven of most friendly rivalry you can imagine!

Oh, and don’t miss to join game’s discord, the developer and most top-tier players all sit right there.

Wavey The Rocket

Wavey The Rocket

Game bought during the Wavey Dash promotion with European Speedrunner Assembly.

The screenshots and videos on steam page are a very good representation of what you get: unique sine wave controls, with the player character following the sine wave and not being able to stop. It’s exactly what it looks like and I’d compare it to weird games centered around an uncontrollable player movement cycle, like the spinning stick game Kuru Kuru Kururin (GBA) or star riding in Gimmick (NES). There’s nothing quite like it, which can be fun, but not recommendable if you’re not down for learning highly specialized controls & mechanics totally different from most other videogames.

Real player with 71.4 hrs in game

The control scheme is easy to use, but difficult to master. I am a very casual gamer and I had no problems with the controls (unless I was panicking).

Even though I had the graphic settings turned down it still looked beautiful.

The music is fantastic and I can’t wait for the soundtrack to be released!

It has leaderboards for time/score and has extra levels to unlock for getting 100% in each level (which I will be going back to previous levels and try to complete).

There are multiple routes in most levels that look like they are designed for speedrunners. Speedrunning isn’t for me, but I would very much enjoy watching people speedrun Wavey The Rocket!
