Upaon: A Snake’s Journey

An amazing and challenging puzzle game. I like pixel art, so i liked the artstyle too.

New mechanics time to time. Recommended

Fun game!!! Challenging but not too difficult or frustrating, at least until the last world. It turns into a race against the clock so you’re punished for actually trying to think ahead before making a move. It’s a nice rush mode that really changes the pace of the game but I found myself getting pretty frustrated on a couple levels in particular where I just could not find a solution and wasn’t able to stop moving to find one. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it made me think of how the last set of levels could have avoided this by maybe not starting the timer until you make your first move, or swapped out a timer entirely for only being able to use the minimum number of moves required to solve the puzzle. I still liked this fast, frantic section overall, though! New mechanics are introduced at a great pace from start to finish in this game, and the artwork is very cute. I’m glad I spent over a thousand dollars upgrading my PC to play games like this.

Loot Slider

Loot Slider

70 levels of limited moves. It’s a slide to obstacle with a twist you have to use cannons to move the pieces. You also have to line up all your moves in advance so in one move* you can tell if you are successful or not or see how many stars you have. Stars are 99% for using less moves/cannons although with some it’s for using certain pieces. Nothing is related to time.

This is a hard review for me to do, as in the beginning the cannons which you have to use to move your pieces drove me utterly bonkers. I nearly gave up due to their fiddly placement. Instead of using right click to turn the cannons you have to hover over them to get a yellow arrow then click to orientate them. This is beyond annoying implementation of this game’s game mechanics. But with the following discovery I got used to them and you move them less.

Stonebot Adventures

Stonebot Adventures

Stonebot Adventures is classic Sokoban with a variety of new puzzle elements, smooth controls and clear, colourful graphics. If you enjoy Sokoban, or brain teasers generally, then do try this game. I love it!

The new elements are certainly interesting. I have my favourites, but they all serve a purpose - to baffle and delight. You might scratch your head, mutter to yourself; you’ll definitely cheer when a problem’s solved. And you don’t need to restart a level unless things have gone really pear-shaped because this game has multiple undo’s.

The game itself is about as basic as you can imagine. Top down block pusher where you control a square and you push other squares and occasionally circles; barely a step above having no graphics at all. That being said, the gameplay, the level design and overall mechanics are pretty competent.

160 ‘Standard’ levels and a handful more ‘Bonus’ levels. Even the ‘Simple’ levels require some thought and foresight to solving them. New mechanics and objects are introduced every few levels to keep things fresh, though none of them are particularly unique or groundbreaking. It’s worth a buck or two if you’re looking for something like Chip’s Challenge with a little more thinking, a little less reflex, and an equal amount of graphical fidelity.

Maze Burrow

Maze Burrow

A good, retro-style puzzle game with some nice twists on the formula to make it worth playing. Block puzzles have been done before, but Maze Burrow has a nice selection of gimmicks and additions to make them feel new. Although the difficulty level is quite high later on, I rarely felt frustrated or incapable of solving the puzzle before me; the difficulty is mostly in figuring out a strategy for each level, and the addition of an undo button makes it far less tedious to get back to where you were. The soundtrack helps as well; it’s very upbeat and never feels repetitive, but it’s also background-y enough to let you focus on the puzzles. Unfortunately, the game is quite short; I took only about 6 hours to clear the campaign, though there are a few brutal bonus levels that open up once you defeat the final boss. Still, it’s definitely worth a play if you’re into puzzle games.

First off I am very happy to see this game come out. Sliding block puzzle games aren’t anything new but I feel this game adds enough to make it unique and worth the time to play it. When something like paired blocks or teleporters are introduced it’s clear there’s a lot of potential for difficult puzzles. This game takes advantage of it’s own gimmicks well, it doesn’t feel like any of them overstayed it’s welcome or wasn’t used enough. I didn’t know what to expect with any level really.

Around world 3 is where the puzzles started to get decently tough in my opinion. Most of the time my experience was just sitting back and thinking about exactly what problem I had to get past. And during those moments I found the game to be most enjoyable, especially when I ran into another problem with a creative solution right after. Then there’s a few levels where there’s so much going on you can’t really think about it, rather you just have to play around until you get somewhere. Those levels aren’t the best, they show up every now and then. But the majority of levels are the clever type, the level design is really great and the strong point of the game.

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build

Who knew building snowmen could be this tricky?

If you dilute it down to its most basic elements, A Good Snowman is Hard to Build is basically sokoban – a very common sort of puzzle game that has you pushing blocks around various environments. Here, we take control of a little monster (originally shown at A Monster’s Expedition game) who is lonely and wants some friends, but in this snow-covered land, friends are hard to come by. So the little monster sets out to build some friends from the crisp snow on the ground. But of course, since this is a puzzle game it’s not just as simple as rolling some snowballs together ;)

The most enjoyable things in the beginning of a game for me were charming, cute and funny main character, nice animation and art, beautiful atmospheric music and sound effects and quite interesting developed mechanics of classical sokoban. It was also awesome to meet little nice details like that you can sit on a bench, touch different objects, chase butterflies and so on. Some of the puzzles were really tight, but most of them were of moderate difficulty and some were pretty straightforward.
