Let’s start this review off by saying that this game has a very mixed reputation, and for a very good reason.

Fallout Tactics isn’t like its forefathers Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Fallout Tactics is a strategy game, and unlike its forefathers, has no speech skill, no major RPG elements, and more straightforward, action based gameplay. It has a very unique story, and is so far the only Fallout game that has its setting in the Midwestern United States.

Fallout Tactics has voiceacted dialog, unlike Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout Tactics also offers four difficulty settings, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Insane. Easy is about what you would expect, easy, it makes the game very very easy and significantly more easygoing. Normal isn’t much different, but it too offers a more story and action based game than the two harder difficulties. Hard is a minor step up from Normal, forcing you to play more adaptively, and sparringly with your supplies, as vendors either don’t restock, or you have to complete a mission for them to, making supplies very restricted if you waste them. Insane is exactly what you would expect, insane. It’s borderline impossibly hard if you play with Tough Guy Mode turned on, which I will touch on in a second. Insane mode drops your accuracy by a flat 20%, halves your average damage, curbs your chance to get criticals to extremely low, doubles enemy damage, resistence, accuracy, and worst of all, the enemy will get critical hits with frightening frequency. Strategy is everything on Insane. Your supplies become even more limited, and you will die many many many times, which makes Tough Guy even more bitter.

Short review

A good strategy title that allows us to reconnect with the universe of Fallout while discovering a different type of gameplay. Amateurs and neophytes alike should enjoy it despite the high level of difficulty.

Long review

So here we are, back in the nuclear winter of the world of Fallout. The devastating war that took place plunges us into the ruins of Chicago, in which the survivors of this apocalypse organize themselves to survive the hordes of looters, animals that have become wild or even mutants. A new category of warrior was therefore formed to defend the few remains of a humanity lost in this post-nuclear world: The Brotherhood of Steel. You will play as one of these knights of a new era and try to complete the many missions that await you, which will require you to use cunning as well as force. Exit the outright role-playing game as offered by the other titles in the series, Fallout Tactics is aptly named and invites us to immerse ourselves in turn-based tactical strategy.

There are already a lot of excellent (constructive) reviews here already for the 21 June 2021 Steam release but I’ll add my 2 cents here to talk more about the side elements of the game and offer some advice for potential players who are still sitting on the fence.


What do you get when you combine the macro-management aspects of SimCity 2013, with FTL-like micro-management in factory management and combat, then slap on a UI that’s reminiscent of grand strategy games? You get the absolutely fascinating city builder that is Industries of Titan (IoT for short).

My first impression of the game:

The beginning is a bit confusing. You have different management levels:

1. Production

  • Collect raw materials (initially from ruins, later in mines)

  • Collect artifacts (also from ruins)

  • Produce fuel and electricity

  • manage garbage (a lot)

2. Citizens and workers

  • Buy and house citizens

  • Earn money from citizens watching advertisements

  • convert some citizens into 24/7 workers (who then stop watching ads)

3. Build on two different levels

  • Inside buildings on a square grid (reminiscent of Tetris blocks :D )

WHAT TO EXPECT: Space themed. Strategy rogue-lite. Epic sci-fi story. Numerous battleship types. Unlockable officers with abilities required for events and combat. Vast number of bridge-view encounters. RTS ship-to-ship tactical battles. Hex-tiled maps with minor dynamic elements. Abstracted text-based planetary missions. Stylised presentation and GUI. 2D pixellated graphics. Hard reset every chapter. Singleplayer only.

Something I’d recommend, but with some reservations.

tl;dr It’s FTL: Faster Than Light , but story-oriented and focus on fleet-level rather than ship-to-ship combat. Overall FTL is the better one of the two, with more run variety and less time wasting fluff, not to mention it’s cheaper, while Crying Suns shines in presentation and other “meat around the bone”.

The good

  • Gameplay wise the game copies many of the good parts of FTL, but puts its own twist on the formula by instead pitting whole fleets against each other. Your mothership dictates your playstyle – alpha strike, turtler with lots of mothership guns, suicide swarmer, general space superiority etc. – and there’s a good number of different squadrons and weapons that either affect the battlefield or directly attack the enemy mothership, with their own quirks and special powers, plus officers that confer unique bonuses to your fleet or ship systems.

Let’s start by saying that I really wanted to love this game. I was swayed by nostalgia over Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel but was ultimately confronted with the realization that Dustwind still needs a lot of polish to compete with modern games.

The AI, in general, isn’t anything special which in some cases takes away any bit of immersion you might wanted to experience. Enemies screaming HELP due to low health, but insist on running towards you, or staying completely stationary while being shot at with sniper fire.

I cannot give a positive review of this game. I tryied… but this is getting worse everytime i play on it. I really wanted to love this game.

  • DEAD This game is dead, in all ways. No one plays PvP, no ones play PvE. If you have friends to play with… give it a try but do not expect playing solo.

  • DIFFICULTY The difficulty of this game will make you nuts.. it is hardcore on every map unless you know exact positions of every enemies. It is a TRY HARD game until you finish successfully a mission.

What is Survivor Squad Gauntlet

The city/town/outpost has been ravage by zombie apocalypse yet 4 survivor still fight on to reach the escape pad to salvation, will they die or will they become the survivor squad?

And basically that, you have 4 man on a mission to survive and escape a hell-hole and get to the chopper. Along the way you’ll have to deal with the occasional mad scientist, crazy cannibalistic flesh eating zombies and special infected. Go me!

I would first like to note that this review comes from a free-key that was provided by the developer in exchange for late beta feedback and/or a promised review and they get both out of me, though the fact that the game was free in no way sways my review.

Though never reviewed by me, I have put many hours into the initial Survival Squad and though it had and still has a few quirky behavioral bugs, for the most part it is a solid game that is well worth playing, but this is not a review of the original, but of the second game: Gauntlets.

Hi there! Well, I’m from development side, so don’t be surprised by my hours on record. I was responsible for music and sounds, so I’ll just skip that part and try to describe other areas as independent as possible.

Cons:

  • There are still some bugs. Some of them are unnoticeable, some of them like to show off, and some of them are actually features, so please finish the tutorial and check out the “How to play” thing in case of any doubts. Anyway, your gameplay shouldn’t be affected much, existing bugs don’t block you from finishing the game and getting all the achievements.

Hi there!

My impression of this game is quite positive to recommend it to other gamers.

Pluses:

  • interesting plot

  • funny text quests

  • simple and clear UI

  • awesome art with unique style

  • music sounds great

-tutorial could be more detailed

-some little bugs. They don’t strongly affect on the game, sometimes help to win faster.

  • not for children, esp. because of some offensive things.

I especially like the music. It works perfectly in the game itself, but it’s also really nice to listen to on it’s own. It gives the game a feeling of tension and urgency when things are getting hectic. It also has a very nice contrast between more ambient and wonderful tracks, while the player searches empty or friendly locations, and the stimulating tracks of hostility.

More than 20 years after it’s release, I can still quite confidently say, without hyperbole, that this is still one of the best games ever made. And I don’t even mean just one of my favourite games, but literally one of the best games in history. The hours I have on this are just the steam version, which is a tiny fraction of what I played back when I was on windows 98/2000 as a kid.

This game is systems upon systems upon systems. All of them working in the background, and in perfect harmony with each other. Everything you do in this game has far reaching consequences that are not necessarily simple or obvious. A decision to use serious explosives when defending a building owned by another company for example, may lead to you pissing that company off, which can change any further missions you do in their territory, can cause services to become unavailable to you, and may even result in inter-corporation wars in both the strategy and battle layers, spontaneously and unexpectedly starting up or beginning with clear hostile actions. While you can put money into deals to improve relations with some companies, others will not be your friends no matter what you do.

XCom Apocalypse is my favorite of all XCom titles, old and new. And - no, not because of nostalgia.

While I’m certainly cherish the challenge of the first two XCom games, and enjoying the tactical shootouts of the newer ones… By the terms of complexity of the gameplay, Apocalypse still has no rival. Well, maybe the first Banner Saga has something common in terms of complexity - but it’s another setting and totally another scale of events.

If you’re still wandering, what I’m talking about - it’s all of the game economics, your actions and their consequences. Yeah, the things I hate in the new XCom games for their inaptitude.

I just started the game, but can see a lot of potential! The developer is very passionate and invested in this game and you can tell. It seems as though if you don’t get featured as a big indie game on steam, it’s hard to get reviews, and I wanted to give a shout out for this one. I’m looking forward to supporting the developer as he continues the game. I read a comment on one of the discussion boards that was pretty nasty, saying the game looked like another game, and honestly, you can say that about so many games out there. It’s the way in which a game is developed, and particularly when the developer cares and listens to feedback, that can make a game feel different and fun.

BarricadeZ takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where the only things left are monsters, and you, a robot. Yet, there’s a tiny spark of hope falling from the sky; a baby. Now you have to get to work, because of course the monsters are after the little bundle of joy.

You have to build your own defenses, and that’s the meat of the game. The gathering and crafting system reminds me a bit of Terraria (to name one), and is nicely done, imo. During the night the monsters will test your design for you, and failure is definitely not an option. Remember the defenseless baby?

It’s ok but definitely not worth $20; get it on sale. Technically a 2D Tower Defense game. There is fun to be had in finding a base design that works for you, lots of options and flexibility. But some very questionable design choices concerning the mining/resource gathering you’ll be doing a lot of underground. You might think that you would be splitting your time between topside and the mine; being topside during the nightly attack waves. You’d be wrong for the most part.

The clock is always ticking (except for pauses during daylight to build/upgrade your base) and you will eventually realize that the game actively punishes you for being topside during attacks at all. That is precious time you could be spending downstairs gathering resources that you need. Now early on, maybe being topside in battle might be useful to scrape by some in-battle repairs between waves. But by day 30 or so of a 78 day campaign when you have enough resources to be well established, there is no good reason to be topside at all. Good defenses will require virtually no active maintenance at all aside from a swift repair visit come daylight. Your war effort is actually crippled by wasting time topside during attacks when you could otherwise still be mining. This means that to play “well”, you must never waste time being up in your base during battle - which is really strange for a TD game. Watching mobs march through your death trap is kinda half the fun of a TD at all and here it is very strongly discouraged to do so. Expect two thirds of this game to be straight up Terraria mining, only the mines get very boring, very quickly. There is some mystery in “Is there a bottom to this mine?"; don’t bet on it, even when you think you’ve found it.
