Atom Zombie Smasher

Atom Zombie Smasher

Atom Zombie Smasher is a super little indie strategy game. The basic premise is that you take on the guise of a commander holding back the zombie hordes from overruning your city.

It works on two levels; first is the strategy where a map of the city districts is where you see the progress of zombie infestations and plan your next mission. You can choose which military assets you take with you from: infantry, snipers, mines, demolitions, barricades, gas attracting teams or artillery. Once you initiate the mission, the game changes to a tactical sub-game where you place your units on the map to best protect the civilians you are trying to extract from the map, while avoiding collateral damage. To many dead civilians and you fail.

There’s alot to be said about Atom Zombie Smasher. the game is an amazing mix of challenging gameplay and challenges.

Atom zombie smasher does not hesitate to put you smack dab into action, your first challenge becomes to rescue some civilians from an impending zombie invasion which sets the tone for the rest of the game.

As you progress in the game you’re provided with varying mercenaries that randomly get picked for missions. Some examples of mercenaries are for example ranger teams, snipers and dynamite teams. Each map will provide a different challenge which requires alot of tactical thinking and planning.

Zombie Commander

I am not happy with this purchase. It is suddenly way to difficult to win with the winter weather and vaccine cure both should be option to turn off. NO activity in discussion at all and no advice nothing. Ruins the experience. Suggestion…slow the vaccine bar down a little ruins the game.

This is my first thumbs down on a game.

I will adjust this review down the road if they change things

Breach & Clear: Deadline Rebirth (2016)

Breach & Clear: Deadline Rebirth (2016)

IN A WORD: MAYBE

THE LOWDOWN:

Breach & Clear: Deadline is an Indie developed, mission-based, action-RPG with tactical elements, set in a mutant infested city. Players take control of a squad of four Special Forces' operators and lead them on missions to collect items and talk to key NPCs while, going into battle against hordes of mutants and humans mercenaries.

Explore a range of locations across four sites to complete missions, gain XP, loot weapons, equipment and ammo from chests throughout the city. Four dungeons; multi-level locations that can be revisited, are designed for grinding XP & loot. The action occurs across a nicely rendered 3D modelled game world. Movement takes place in real-time but can be paused when combat begins, to issue orders. It can be returned to RTS or made to continue step-by-step. As quests are attempted random encounters or Area Operation (AO) missions take place.

I rather enjoyed Breach & Clear to the point that when I heard they made a zombie coop type I was rather thrilled to give it a shot with a friend. Sadly when I first got it, the game had a lot of issues with the coop aspect such as crashes, glitches (if your coop partner dies then your game just doesn’t progress sometimes) and a lot of network issues such as desync. Instead of trying to fix the coop they completely removed it which destroys the reason why I got the game in the first place.

The Last Hope: Zombie Defense TD

The Last Hope: Zombie Defense TD

A very competent Tower Defense title.

Does not bring anything new to the genre but what it does, it does fairly well. Good upgrade trees for towers and abilities and not too easy - you will have to think. Something different - from the fifth level the game will throw decoy units (crows) at you, so you will have to be careful about over use of archers and mages.

Not really a fan of the endless mode as it can go on too long (at least for me). I gave up at 175 waves. Maybe this aspect needs to be more difficult.

Great game with great potential, although some achievements are hard to come by.

Too Many Humans

Too Many Humans

Too Many Humans is a Real Time Strategy game, but instead of controlling the army, or a private security force as is often the case in such games, this time you are controlling zombies! Sounds good right!

Let’s take a quick look at the official story.

“You are Phthisis, the God of pestilence, decay and death. Humanity has degraded too far into greed and is causing irreversible damage to Gaia; your dear sister, and their planet. Something has to be done. But like every god, you have rules (omnipotence gets boring otherwise): you are not allowed to directly kill humans. But you can raise them back from the dead. And if the living ones die because of this… Eh shrug.

Too Many Humans is an RTS where you are Pthisis, the God of Decay who is on Earth to eradicate mankind with your zombie army but only because Humanity has exploited the Earth, one another and everything else they could get their greedy hands on. And you’re here to end this awful reign with questionable methods that are for the benefit of the planet, and everything else except maybe for mankind.

Red Solstice 2: Survivors

Red Solstice 2: Survivors

A few things about Red Solstice 2:

  • Red Solstice is one of those games where having a group of people in voice chat with whom you regularly play makes it significantly better.

  • I found the unlock progression-rate to be rather slow, yet far from the worst. If you’ve ever played Vermintide 2, it’s noticeably faster than that, but still a bit of a grind. Though, take this with a grain of salt, as I dislike all time-accumulated or points-accumulated unlock-gating in games that do not have a tycoon-like feedback element to them.

I’ve gotten some play time out of this and enjoyed it for the most part, so I’ll give it a thumbs up, especially for its price tag.

If you’re fine with lots of bugs, some balance issues and weird descriptions with new content releases which are fixed between a week to a month later, then this is a pretty solid game. It’d be an awesome game if it wasn’t constantly tripping over itself with every content release.

Singleplayer is serviceable with bots if you build them and use them right. There are a lot of “wrong” builds which will make playing singleplayer with bots miserable until the “right” builds are discovered. Every game mode can also be played online coop with friends or strangers, which tends to make the experience more interesting.

Strain Tactics

Strain Tactics

tl;dr - if you can endure the clunkiness of the UI, frustrating game mechanics, poor tutorial and lack of instructions/familiarisation in the early stages of the game, you will enjoy the squad-based controllable tactical experience that is unique in its own fun way. One of few games I played where a poor initial impression ended with a “definitely recommend” review.

Coming from games like Door Kickers and Running with Rifles, I was interested to see Strain Tactics recommended within the game genre. My initial impressions were….disappointing. After the first 2-3 tutorial levels, you were just dropped straight into the battlefield with little to no understanding of what to do next other than “kill no less than 42 strains per mission to avoid base invasions, keep killing until you prove worthy then join the final assault”. This becomes a pattern as the game mechanics are often explained a few short texts; reading the hints at the outpost/talking to the helibase crew provided very little extra knowledge. For example, the demonstration of your starter troop’s morale and traits system did not showcase what its benefits/drawbacks are (granted Combat Engineer’s 50% damage reduction trait isn’t visible). I only understood it when I had the first-hand experience of seeing my Decon blow two squadmates to pieces with a panicked shotgun discharge, or seeing Inka’s Xenophobia execute my medic who was only scratched with a minor infection who CLEARLY had decon pills (we’ll get back to Inka later). The game is littered with consumables, weapons, items, or troop unlocks which does not make the distinction of which one to use, keep, or sell off. Stats such as max weapon range vs detection range vs optimal attack range had me confused for hours. You pretty much have to learn by experience and if it doesn’t fit your playstyle, well too bad keep playing until you unlock the next thing and hope that one works out. Not only that, despite the game telling you troopers will only fire at the optimal range to reduce friendly fire, you will have the ominous experience of “Did your piss-poor just friendly-fire your squadmate again??!”. Couple the brain-dead AIs with poor pathfinding and a UI designed for mobile games, the game just creates an unrewarding learning experience that showed its fun potential…but missed its mark and in no way comes close to the two games I mentioned above.

Strain Tactics is RTS strategy, set in a post-apocalyptic world where bodybags are pokeballs and human trafficking is an acceptable business practice.

I’ve played a bit and will probably play some more. I recommend this to anyone who likes squad based strategy games. Included below are a bunch of pros and cons that I’ve come up with in about two hours of play. The game is fun, but is held back by UI problems (which makes it seem like it was for a touch screen primarily). The only time I found the UI actually intuitive was the Heli weapon fire screen, where the UI and big buttons were actually not that bad.

Zombo Buster Advance

Zombo Buster Advance

Zombo Buster Advance is a Tower Defense game with a twist (that you can change the position of the units once they’ve been put down)… it’s fun, kinda short if you don’t go for all the achievements (but if you do the time played can be 3 to 4 times as long- 34 hrs for me first play through to completion… still kinda short….).

The units are self explanatory, if you choose to play this game you will have your favorites but be aware that to get all 93 achievements you need to play with just about every unit (thus the 34 hrs). The obstacles are interesting and there are a number of interesting zombies.

Pros:

  1. An original tower defense game where you have to elevate your units on different floors to deal with certain situations.

  2. Collect up to 16 units as you progress 50 levels and 8 worlds or by earn achievements base on your performance in each level.

  3. 45 Zombies with unique and troublesome abilities to bypass your defenses

  4. 9 Gadgets you can use to support your units.

  5. Upgrades and Badges that can empower your units (So far I have managed to beat the game with little grinding involved)
