Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

When I was but a wee lad… I played this game on PlayStation 2. Here we are, many years later, though, and it has finally returned to me on Steam, in the format of the original PC edition, which I have been wanting for a while. And, well, put simply… It’s exactly as good as I remember. There’s some significant differences, if you played it on PS2 as well, but it’s still one of my all time favorite games for a reason.

The differences from PS2 are miniscule, as the blood is red instead of green, a few cutscenes were lost while new ones appeared, and you can decide at what pace to build your base (as well as control it’s turrets), among a few other things. As a whole, the game is the same, but with more added on.

Taking heavy inspiration from it’s tongue in cheek name, Dark Sales is a 2D Souls-like game with charmingly simple visuals and strikingly challenging gameplay. Taking place in an office setting with most enemies being other employees the game is satisfyingly solid. We spent a few hours with the game and here are our spoiler-free first impressions.

How does it look?:

The game is highly stylized with simplistic but very effective visuals. We initially had some difficulty discerning what we could and couldn’t interact with in the relatively open world but the game’s consistency and informative tutorial set us up for success in the long run. Whether you’re resting at water coolers, fighting pencil pushers, or exploring a sewer you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the look of Dark Sales.

DON’T GIVE UP: A Cynical Tale

DON’T GIVE UP: A Cynical Tale

I remember playing the first demo for this wonderful game way back when the Kickstarter campaign first launched. From that first moment I knew this could be something really special!

It’s got incredibly off-the-wall humour, lashings of self-deprecation (which I’m pretty adept at myself), a dollop of meta, wall-breaking moments and a wonderful helping of deep, emotional storytelling. Underneath all of the fantasy-style plot there’s a raw, pulsating bundle of feelings that really comes through in some of our protagonist’s monologues.

cons:

Don’t give up has an interesting premise, but in my opinion is falls short halfway thorough the story.

the villain seemed interesting but as soon as its intensions are revealed, made me loose al the hopes for the game’s story.

The story in part circles around the depression which affects character’s everyday life, and it can give some nice insight on how people with depression reason or react to situation, for me it seem to fall flat at the end of the story.

the story also has plot holes, especially as you progress towards the end, and in some way it took me out of the story since some of the informations on the characters are just left out. and it was hard to understand what was going on.

An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs

An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs

I am a ‘dog person’ so this game looked intriguing. I had it on my wish list and picked it up, on sale. Having spent many hours in airports run by dogs, I have very mixed feelings. It is a silly, somewhat mindless game with the biggest challenge being to find specific characters, objects and gates in each of 6 airports. Woven into this is a love story about a long distance relationship between you and Krista (the last two humans left on the planet). Your busy lives intersect at airports and it is sweet to watch the relationship unfold through many brief encounters. Although each airport has very different geography, there is a lot of repetition (the same shops, the same vendors, and much of the same dialog).

Hilariously it was my girlfriend who got me this game, we are long distance, and neither of us actually knew much about the game. I just kinda wishlisted it long ago cause haha cute dogs and alien airports, and she got it cause just frick it we get gifts for each other so sue us (please dont, legal action scares me). Well, 13 hours later and I am all misty eyed over what was supposed to be a silly little game. Even now typin this out I am gettin all teary eyed. Not gonna get too into detail cause I ain’t wanna spoil stuff but heck, this game is gonna last in my brain head for a long while. 10/10, Recommend it forever

Hey! If you enjoy my reviews, follow my curator page here! I am an independent Curator providing reviews and insights to the games that need the spotlight! Thank you! :)

Zanardi and Liza , husband and wife, are a Development Studio from Brazil who debut on the Steam platform with Dog Duty. Published by Dutch veteran’s SOEDESCO (of Owlboy fame), the game took me by surprise!

Dog Duty is an ok game. It captures the spirit of an old school real time tactical squad combat game.

You control a squad made up of 3 mercenaries, with each mercenary having one special ability. You can change their equipped gun and you have available consumable items such as molotovs to deal damage over a large area and syringes to immediately restore health.

Your goal is to conquer the three bosses in each zone and head on to defeat the final boss.

The tactical part of the combat is enjoyable enough with some minor gripes. It is pretty satisfying clearing the level of all enemies. There are some drawbacks though that take away from the experience though. The abilities do seem to be bugged in that sometimes they do not trigger for all of your allies. For example, one character has an ability that is supposed to heal your entire team. Sometimes it does not heal your entire team and this can lead to frustrating situations where your team wipes. The game does not control that well at times when units overlap and it becomes hard to select the desired target and action.

S.W.I.N.E. HD Remaster

S.W.I.N.E. HD Remaster

Campaign is a bit unfair cuz of the pre-set defenses of the enemy: ton of artillery and strong defense lines + random encounters where I have to fight more units than I have for the whole mission, this makes me buy repair trailers, and the repairing is so slow, and there’s the ammo problem too… missions are usually 45+mins where the actual action is like 30% the rest are the traveling and the restoring of units. The movement is really terrible, units collide, not to mention on narrow bridges going across is nearly impossible especially with more units. The cinematics' graphic stayed the same bad quality despite of the HD Remaster.

Real player with 77.2 hrs in game

Your units gain xp, and can lvl up 2 times. That gives them additional armor and damage. They transfer to another mission. That’s main strenght and also main issue with this game.

Every time you finish map you obtain 1000 $ - you can buy new units and/or upgrades.

If you loose unit in battle… best solution is to reload save or restart map. Otherwise you might not make it with not enough units on the later game.

You use the same currency to buy ammo, fuel and repair kit. Also every time you call for bombing - it also cost 50 $.

+Reworked and well thought-out resource system that promotes base expansion

+Really good in-game voice acting

+Clear and understandable interface

+Co-op campaign!

+Action-packed battles that require both macromanagement and microcontrol!

+Gamechanging unit abilities! Not a single ability is truly useless

Red Alert 3, for the first time in C&C history, featured a full coop campaign for all three factions. The Red Alert Spin-Off of C&C always was my favourite setting and Red Alert 3 didn’t receive the critical acclaim and fanbase it actually deserved. It played exactly like Red Alert 2, which personally is still my all time favourite C&C game right after C&C Generals.

The FMV scenes were cheezy as always and George Takeii did a brilliant job just playing himself in a samurai robe.

I have many fond memores for Red Alert and it still plays marvellous today.

Deadly Step

Deadly Step

This game is not directly a masterpiece, and yet lovers to know the pain of wandering through the mazes is dedicated.

The authors are sadists, these are not levels, but real torture chambers. How unfortunate that BDSM is not delivered.

It is based on an atmospheric game with a story, a mediocre nice graphics and running around for things that fell after death.

Real player with 1.6 hrs in game

For some reason, in this casual game, at first it’s boring and dreary, then it’s fun to run away from slow deaths, but at some point you start, like a frenzy in a panic, rushing in all directions in search of salvation. In the appendage, the hunt to kill those who did it. Naive is better not to play it.

Wild West Saga: Idle Tycoon Clicker

Wild West Saga: Idle Tycoon Clicker

As a pointless idle game to play halfway through and then forget about, it’s an acceptable game.

If you want closure on a game, or 100% achievements, or a feeling of playing a completed product, it’s not.

To get 100% completion, you have to refer at least 120 new players, either by constantly spamming every board you can find, being one of the few lucky ones able to get their family code listed on the highscore list, or by creating 120 fake accounts. Not that I in any way endorse cheating the referral system by switching chrome to incognito mode, opening the game on kongregate, and using the free gems to skip ahead until you can insert your family code.

After 1000+h, I can safely say that this game, although fun at some times, is an unbalanced mess, with repeated technical and design problems…

People cannot finish a World without the Devs resetting them to the next world, if they try to maximize the cards you get in each town (which is of course the natural thing to do). This problem is known for more than a year, and its still not fixed, the Forum is full of these requests. I too had to use it once already, and removed my previously negative review based on that they helped me manually…
