Trials of the Blood Dragon

Trials of the Blood Dragon

Okay here’s the deal.

There are much better trials games and MUCH better platformer games.

If you haven’t already extensively played and enjoyed previous trials games, leave and come back to this review when you have.

Okay now assuming you are a trials veteran, here is what to expect. This is coming from someone who has 150+ hours played.

The story mode will be completed in about 2-3 hours.

This consists of a collection of 26 levels, which are a mashup of some beginner tracks, a couple jetpack skill games, a couple minecart skill games, some trials tracks with a grappling hook, and some platforming levels with truly terrible controls/physics.

First off, I’ve played Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and all of the Trials games.

The story is just not believable, not even to a 10 year old kid. There are a few jokes here and there but none of them are very funny.

If you’re expecting a game like Trials Evolution or Trials Fusion, you’d most likely be disappointed. The game-play is just not what you would expect from a Trials game. Half of the time you’ll be playing as one of the kids in a 2D ‘run and shoot’ game and other half, you’ll be playing in a 2.5D mode in Trials game-play with a few twists, I’m trying not to spoil too much. If you’re a fan of the previous Trials games, then chances are that you won’t be liking it at all.

Driftpunk Racer

Driftpunk Racer

Notice how the trailer is barely 20 seconds long, and of that you see a few seconds of a car “drifting” on the track?

Don’t be fooled, this game is no better than the free mobile car games you can download on your phone, and probably plays worse.

I sacrificed an hour of my time to get all the achievements, but bear in mind this game has “Profile Features Limited”, so these won’t count against your epeen tally on steam anyway.

The price is a joke, fortunately I got this in a bundle.

Death Rally (Classic)

Death Rally (Classic)

If you haven’t tried Death Rally Classic, you do not know what you are missing. I originally owned this game on a cd before getting the system I have now. I will add this warning. This game won’t play on the El Capitan of Mac Os X software, the closest it comes is Yosemite.

The game runs a lot smoother than it ever did on my Cd and it’s great to relive a classic. Plus there’s an added bonus for all you Duke Nukem fans. He’s one of the selectable drivers in this game and comes with his classic “Hail to the king, baby” lines when he comes in first.

Haven’t played this for damn near twenty years, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it on Steam; for free no less! Iirc, my parent’s crap Gateway had this as demoware, so I could only play a few rounds. Even so, I enjoyed the occasional break from Full Tilt.

Reading through the first several negative reviews, it’s clear a lot of players didn’t didn’t get past the learning curve. This is a game from the 90’s, so go ahead and set the bar accordingly. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy this little morsel from the past:

Electro Ride: The Neon Racing

Electro Ride: The Neon Racing

Well, what can I say. The game is unique. First and foremost for the racing game lover I should mention a very unusual set of cars which Electro Ride offers you to drive: every car is real, and includes many less-known soviet prototypes you’ve probably never heard of. But check this out: the very first car that is given to you in a tutorial is FSO Syrena Sport - and that’s just the beginning. The cast of cars is rich, diverse and very rare - I doubt you will see anything like that in any other game anytime soon.

(Updated)

I honestly can’t recommend this game as it is completely unrealistic.

I have owned two of the cars that are in the game and I can tell you that they do not go above 120kph even in freefall.

Handling on the other hand is spot on.

You turn your steering wheel and the cars go straight. Sometimes oversteer sometimes understeer … you just never know.

I wouldn’t recommend the cars either, unless you live in a garage. Nostalgia is powerful poison.

Anyway back to the game. I’m half way into the career.

MegaRace 1

MegaRace 1

Wow. This brings me back. Instant-buy.

For 3 bucks I could relive a major part of my childhood without fussing with getting my really old copy to run, just launch and go - with controller support (ish)

It’s great. So many great memories and Lance is just too funny. Even today it still plays well.

So for the positives the game does have rebindable keys, and works well with a 360 controller. And the game is at least playable but you can really tell this is the first in the series as it feels like a collection of half finished ideas.

Really it’s more of an on the rail shooter than a true racer, as you only ever 1v1. Add in some bad power up balance as well as limited tracks and cars to unlock.

So although it’s not totally awful and it is at least playable, I would only recommend you pick this up as part of the megarace pack and not on its own as the limited content will quickly wear thin.

Clean and pleasant graphics and a modern f-zero vibe. A good amount of challenging tracks and an amazing soundtrack.

Outrun is probably the most universally played and well-known racing game, maybe not so much today but definitely as I was growing up seeing the bright red ferrari arcade cabinet at an entertainment center or pizza parlor was always something to get excited about. It was the staple time trial driving game, the core mechanic just being to race against the clock and best yourself in a show of endurance. It also had the added bonus of just being really relaxing and having some of the most iconic and memorable scenery still referenced and parodied/referenced in games today.

I don’t think I’ve had this much fun with a game since I sat down and played Battletanx as a child. This game is so in touch with what makes an arcade racer fun that it reminds you that games are meant to be fun in all aspects, whether it be playing them, watching them, listening to them, what have you.

Slipstream can be rough to pick up at first, as learning the drift and timing it on the corners, especially the consecutive curves, can be pretty difficult, which is then coupled with the fact that some corners aren’t marked, and the environment doesn’t really help to establish that there’s a corner coming up. On most tracks, they’re well telegraphed, either by signs, or by easy environmental tells, but it can be tricky to determine, or relies on your memory. The memory, however, is not hard to maintain, as all the tracks are quite distinct from each other, and as a result, it becomes very easy to associate corners and straightaways to the tracks they’re on. But oh, man, the feeling of speed that is gained by racing around the track is immense, and it’s boosted even further by the main mechanic of Slipstream, the slipstream. There’s no better feeling than the one you get from slingshot-ing off of your opponents into the long curve before the finish, drifting right over the finish. And my god, when the music comes in and drives you along, a fast as hell beat for the fast as hell drift….. Positively orgasmic. The way the tunes accentuate the drive is nothing short of beautiful
