GTR 2 FIA GT Racing Game

GTR 2 FIA GT Racing Game

Although old GTR2 is still one of the best racing sims out there.

GTR2 is based on the 2003/2004 seasons of the FIA GT Championship, and its base content includes 25 cars & 15 track locations used in those seasons. The game has nice graphics, good sounds, handling of cars is very good, precise & intuitive, controller support is good, and there’s lots of mod content available.

Graphics can be slightly better than rFactor depending on the mod/track used, and replays generally look better than rFactor. The game only requires 512MB of video memory when run on the highest settings, so even if you have an old PC you should be able to get good graphics in this game.

First thing is first, yes, the Steam version of the game does not come stock with Ferrari or Porsche cars. This is a licensing issue and Steam is not trying to screw you over. However, you can easily return Ferrari and Porsches to your game by updating it and installing the No-CD patch (Note: Steam version is already No CD, you still need the patch though to get Ferrari and Porsche to work).

On to the game. It’s a very old game, true, but the physics are outstanding and with mod added content like cars and tracks you’ll find the graphical experience to be pleasant enough to not be distracting and when you’re in the moment it’s very easy to forget how dated the game looks. The AI is like all AI: terrible. They can run real life lap times and generally speaking they’re fairly competent -but- they are absolutely terrible at racing off the racing line. This isn’t unique to GTR2 or the GMotor engine, it’s an industry wide issue. It’s AI, you deal with it, and it’s not too bad at the end of the day.

Lets talk about this game.

This game was the 2nd ever f1 game I played from codemasters after 2010, and obviously it was back in my ps3 days with not having internet :) now obviously i got on pc, and personally don’t feel much difference but anyway lets get into it

Positives:

Tyre wear: This game is very easy on tires, its so easy, because on this game the tires are always scaled to 100% distance, thats why for example in a monza 25% race in the past what I could do is pit on lap 1 for options and then do the whole race on it,. other games like 11, 13, for example have tyre scaling so in a 25% race i cant ignore my pit window easily :P or do that in monza.

A good but slightly long in the tooth simulation that has been constantly injected with new life thanks to incredibly strong modding support from day 1.

Look up Content Manager, Custom Shaders Patch and SOL, all three work together to inject new life into the game.

good driving simulator for driving enthusiasts looking to go beyond arcade racing games like gt sport or forza. Physics are more challenging, and modding is good. this version of the game is good for gamers looking to try drifting, casual race lobbies, and a wide variety of car and track mods.

pros:

-more realistic physics compared to simcade driving games

-large variety of downloadable tracks and cars online for modding

-good simulator to practice realistic drifting

-challenge modes and single player AI are actually hard

car go brrm brrm very fast much wow

jokes aside, a very good, yet content limited simulator (licensing). Works best with wheel. Mostly for online races - in my opinion single play is just there, to be there and to have people learn the game.

Immersion at the next level - so many things to keep in mind for every game.

I never thought I’d play anything but open wheelers, but ACC changed it forever, and gave me a real appreciation for GT3 cars.

It’s far from flawless - but most of the time it’s just beautiful.

Stock Car Extreme

Stock Car Extreme

Simply the best racing sim I have ever played. I have been addicted to it ever since it was released a few years ago.

Every one of the various cars is a pleasure to drive. The closed cockpit of the V8 Stock cars is superb. Turn off all assists and the speed of the Formula V12 dares you to even blink, the Formula Extremes demand good throttle control in & out of turns, and in the words of James Hunt, you can go fast in the Formula Retro if you’ve got big balls.

I’ve enjoyed race sims since Indy 500 by Papyrus in the ‘80’s, but the greatest for me was Geoff Crammond’s F1GP - it had all the rules, scoring, tyre strategies, and excellent AI. I waited for something that would finally match it, but each time a new game was released, there was always something letting it down.

tl,dr: SCE has tons of great content and compelling gameplay and is worth your time and money.

When I first saw Stock Car Extreme on Steam, I thought it seemed like something that wouldn’t interest me. “Stock Cars” mostly means NASCAR in the US, and I don’t like that kind of racing. And “Extreme”? Huh?

It turns out the “Stock Car” comes from the Stock Car Brasil series which is similar to DTM. The “Extreme” is from Reiza’s (the developers) connection to “Cockpit Extreme Racing” which is a line of sim-racing cockpit products. I have forgiven the somewhat puzzling name.

Intro/Graphics: If you love old cars (or just cars) and challenging racing, this is for you. This game is from 2005, so the graphics are outdated, although that doesn’t bother me. I find the tracks and landscape suffer the most, but the cars themselves look great! The lighting is particularly good on the cars and everywhere else. You can race anytime of day, and night races are fun (I always end up breaking a headlight tho oops). Though, you cannot race in the rain unlike GTR2, however this is okay because driving these 60s/70s cars in the rain would be a struggle.

INTRO

You may think this game is worthless with the amount of newer simulators, but I don’t think so!

THE GOOD AND THE BAD

  • Everything detailed to perfection

  • Huge variety of cars; each handles differently and has its own feel and sound

  • A lot of tracks with multiple versions of many of them

  • The game still looks awesome after all these years

  • It’s playable on keyboard (even on higher difficulties; unlike GTR)

  • Takes a lot of time to complete; quite challenging

  • Majestic soundtrack that fits the game really well

Redout: Enhanced Edition

Redout: Enhanced Edition

Game is good, and hard. Visuals are great and music is quite good too (and fitting). If you have questions/concerns, go to the official discord (search for redout). I can go more into that later. But, I would like to address certain inane negative reviews that are popping up. By not allowing comments, others can’t explain the issues that they bring up, which is pretty unfair for the game. Hopefully this will clarify some things.

How it Runs; Crashes:

My low end 2012 computer with onboard graphics runs the game decently with the lowest settings, but the problems are mainly from when there are a lot of AI racers with you, especially on parts of certain maps. I seem to get from 28-48fps if no weapons are used, AI probably taking a few frames off. Played off and on since late 2018, a lot recently. I tend to crash when I use Repair Drone (great for new people but shouldn’t rely on it) on certain tracks, and sometimes I crash during vs AI races, presumably because of them using said powerup, but this is usually rare (helps to get out in front of the pack I think). But my computer/gfx are bad, so. Download the demo. It is an old version and I think it ran slightly worse, and the physics are a bit different, but you can get an idea of how it plays, and if it will likely run well. If you’re worried about crashes/bugs, ask the Discord for more details on what can happen and how to avoid issues. I am not bothered that much by most of it, and I think I can avoid most all of it (other than Repair Drone crash on some tracks).

6/1/18: Although everything I wrote in this review is true, I NO LONGER SUPPORT REDOUT.

Thank you.

“REDOUT: Enhanced Edition” is (oddly enough) advertised as a futuristic AG (anti gravity) racer that’s a throwback to the “past” of computer games, perhaps because today’s DEVs feel players don’t want something new in their futuristic racing games. Fortunately, this reviewer/player is neither hampered nor guided by those comparrisons, and so this review (and reviewer) will ignore them generally, presuming experienced players are far more knowledgeable. However, since potential REDOUT consumers are clearly expected to know earlier racers well enough to base this purchase specifically on that knowledge, I will touch on gameplay only superficially, and place focus on where this game is less than perfect and may dissapoint players. (In many ways, REDOUT feels like a game BEGGING to be completed contextually.)

F1 2018

F1 2018

F1 2018 a sim-racers game or marketing hype?

So F1 2018 has been one of the bigger racing titles to come out this year, Codemasters have promised a lot from the simulation side of the game. In this review I will give my opinions on the game as of now, comparing it to the previous f1 titles and if this is starting to be a real sim-racers title or if it is just marketing hype.

What’s new and what’s good?

F1 2018 is the latest edition of the F1 series, Codemasters have promised a lot and I think they really stuck to their word, that being said I think the game has taken some huge steps forward. The drivers models has improved a lot in comparison to F1 2017 which I thought was lacking, on the contrary this is a pretty serious game. With Codemasters new tire ans suspension models the way the cars perform and handle has improve significantly over last years game. The force-feedback feels much more real, I can really feel the cerbs and changes in road texture when driving in the rain. I do not think F1 2018 can be compared to Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2 or any sim which main priority isn’t going to replicate a formula 1 car, they just handle way different, these are high downforce cars, they can’t be categorized in the same box as 1992 DTM cars, it’s not fair to do that. In comparison to last game you really get a sence of the tires moving across the tarmac, this is a big step in the right direction. Optimisation has also been improved which already was pretty good in the previous title, this is even better for the ones with older rigs. To me this is the first F1 title ever that makes me feel like I have been seated in a formula 1 racecar, rather then just being superficially placed there.

EDIT

a few patches have been released since the writing of my review, with that being said i stand by what i said in the review below, with every “fix” they bring they break 3-4 other things and sometimes the fix doesn’t even fix. its a shambloic, wasted, lackluster, half assed, lazy attempt by codemasters to try and rectify mistakes made in delopment and all they do with every patch is make things worse, please just stop codemasters, you’re not helping anyone and truth be told you haven’t helped anyone with anything in this franchise for a number of years now. below is a video of how much the “fix for multiplayer” fixes it…

RACE 07

RACE 07

General

Race 07 was and still is one of the best simulation racing games. The in-depth detail that Race 07 has is amazing for a game that was released in 2007! If you just buy the vanilla game without any DLC’s, there are still many cars and tracks to choose from. I would recommend buying the DLC’s as they are not expensive and will add a huge amount of game-playing hours and enjoyment.

UI

The UI couldn’t be simpler. The main menu is broken up into Career, Time Trial, General Race, Settings, etc… From there you pick your track, cars and race settings. Still looks brilliant, and easy to understand the menu path.

NOTE: This review includes notes on expansions aswell.

With 800+ Hours played, I think it’s safe to say that this game and it’s expansions is one that will last the test of time.

It may not have the following of other racing simulators like rFactor or iRacing, but this is easily up there with some/all of the best.

It has a great racing community if you find a relaxed group of racers (RaceDepartment are great for clean racing and no lock-in racing series). The choice of cars across all the expansions is perfect for online racing.

Street Legal Racing: Redline v2.3.1

This game was a wildcard for me. Last year I picked this up and dived right in because, well, I’m a gearhead and I like to break things. But at the time, the game was in such a frustratingly unstable state that I’d get a game crash every 5-10 minutes. With that said, I didn’t pick it up for several months.

Several months later, the devs have been hard at work to fix some of the many problems that lay within previous versions of the game, and now it’s mostly playable. So now, I get a crash every 40 minutes-1 hour. That’s quite a marginal improvement!

SLRR is a game about building, repairing and modifying cars. If you like cars or want an in-depth understanding on how cars work, buy this game.

The game starts by giving you a garage, a small sum of money and the ability to visit a used car lot/salvage yard to purchase your first wreck of a car.

Working on cars is the core element of the game. Vehicles are incredibly detailed with dozens of swappable components. You’ll spend about 70% of your time in the garage trying to make your car go as fast as you can afford. The remaining 30% is spent on actually driving your car around a GTA-esque city, earning money by doing street races during the day and drag races at night (hint: drag races are more profitable by several orders of magnitude), running away from police if they try to pull you over as well as trying to keep the parts on your car that you spent the last 30 minutes saving up for from falling off.
