Star Drift Evolution

Star Drift Evolution

Before you start reading the great wall of text: there is a FREE Demo of the game that you can download to see if you can run it (or if you just like it or not). I’ve got a friend who’s got a laptop with integrated graphics, and he was able to run this around 30-40 fps. Now, onto important stuff.

First off, here are the racing games I’ve played before Star Drift Evolution:

-Dirt 4 and Dirt 2.0

-WRC 7 and 8

-Forza Horizon 5 and Motorsport 6

-Distance

-Assetto Corsa and Competizione

-Project Cars 1 and 2

Simply the best of top down racers.

  • Awesome driving and drifting feeling.

  • Skill based despite its cute looks.

  • Many cars. Brilliant 10 point system distributed between topspeed, acceleration, grip and downforce. There are no best car, just best suited for different tracks (except for the Firetruck and other goofy vehicles).

*Lots of varying tracks. Short, long, bumpy, tarmac, sand, ice, you name it. I personally like the short bumpy circuit tracks best.

Fun career mode, that keeps you coming back trying to improve your laptime.

Super Night Riders

Super Night Riders

My first reaction to this game was: this game can only be valuable for nostalgia/historical factor, and I can’t honestly recommend it to anyone else. But then I played it a little more, and it got me thinking.

This game faithfully recreates the gameplay of 80s arcade racers with all the important details, but with more modern visuals. The visuals are not mind blowing, but they look pleasant and are not dull.

The gameplay doesn’t have a lot of variety, unfortunately, even compared to the 80s racers. There’s only one vehicle you can choose, one type of “enemies”, no unexpected nasties like an oil spill and such, and the track variety is pretty much limited to the visual theme. The tracks are handcrafted though and are nicely tuned in terms of the difficulty curve and the challenge.

Super Night Raiders is my first racing game that I’ve managed to finish. Actually, it isn’t exactly a racing game - you aren’t trying to be the 1st but complete laps under a given time, depending on the difficulty setting you choose. While you are driving you are encountering other freeway bikers which are supposed to be obstacles that you aren’t supposed to hit - if you hit them you get a massive speed penalty which can ruin your run. One or two mistakes is actually ok, but if you do more than that you probably won’t make it on the normal mode. Easy mode is exactly the same, except that it grants you more time to finish each lap so you are allowed to make more mistakes, but you don’t get achievements.

Crazy Taxi

Crazy Taxi

“Like Skyrim with taxis” 10/10 -IGN.

“Is that GTA V ?” 11/10 -Random kid walking into my room.

So, let’s begin to be serious. This game is criticized by a lots of players because this is the XBox Live Arcade Version. It can be considered as Crazy Taxi 1.1. The differences that players seems to disapprove is the soundtrack that is a complete new one and the fact that the Kentuchy Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut trademarks were switched to Fried Chicken Shack and Pizza Parlor.

So, here start the personal opinion, I really enjoyed that game. You’re constantly having fun without raging every five seconds. The new songs list is good, the controls still really good (a way to show your arcade skills) and the new patch Sega released for all Sega Dreamcast Collection games gives you the possibility to use your own buttons and add a FXAA to your graphism. The new achievements are very easy, you can do them in a single evening if you understand the engine (If you don’t you can decrease the time difficulty.) Plus, the four characters are still really cool. My personal best is Gus (ಠ‿ಠ).

Originally I thought this port was absolute crap since a lot of the soul was stripped away, namely the original soundtrack and licensed locations. But this is a PC port, and modding exists. So if you know how to download a mod pack , and you’re proficient in dragging and dropping files in the right place (scary!), then you’re literally a few MB away from playing the game as God intended.

As for the game itself, this game is absolutely wild. The premise is simple: pick up passengers, drop em off as fast as you can. Easy, right? Well unless you git gud , you’re gonna find it difficult to rack up a nice juicy score at the end, which is where the skill portion of this game comes into play. Give yourself enough time and you’ll be setting some amazing scores with what you learn (although watching unskilled players will look like its being played in slow motion). And hey, while you’re learning how to consistently do limiter cuts, you’ll be listening to some hard-hitting punk rock (The Offspring & Bad Religion) that makes this game stand out from other arcade games of the same era.

HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED™

HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED™

Love the game, but it has some flaws. Purchased for myself and my 5 year son that loves hot wheels. He waited months for the game to come out, in pure excitement that his favorite hot wheels cars where in such an exciting racing game. All he wanted was the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Between the two of us, we beat every race and boss, and earned that DeLorean. As my little dude was admiring the car in his collection - he went to add it to his favorites and instead hits the wrong button and POOF! Car is gone.

The game is great, perphaps the best Hotwheels game ever produced, with fun gameplay, dozens of cars, a very advaced track editor and a decent challenge (Provided you set the game to hard instead of normal or extreme).

However as other have said the price is nuts, I collect batmobiles and I can tell you that this isn’t worth it, not only does the ultimate edition not include everything, this is the second game that I know of that has DLC for the DLC.

What do I mean? Ok, see that season pass? if you buy it you will have part of the content of it locked, especifically the villain cars which are sold separately, also just because you have the season pass and the villains DLC it doesn’t mean that you get the cars, they only become available to unlock in the season pass and grinding for them takes forever.

Bang Bang Racing

Bang Bang Racing

Bang Bang Racing is pegged as a top-down “family friendly” racing game. With a similar camera angle and toy-car style as TNT Racers (released earlier this year) you’ll race with four different car classes among three gameplay modes in an attempt to earn the gold trophy in each championship circuit. Bang Bang Racing strips away things like power-ups and weapons in favor of a simple and pure racing game. Unfortunately what’s left is a rather boring racing game with little in the way of any replay value.

As a seasoned player of this game, I would recommend it as a 7/10, but it is definitely not without flaws. I’ll list the pros, cons and debatable features from my experience so you can decide if you think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!

Pros

  • 4 Player splitscreen, a rarity on PC. I spent most of my time playing this mode.

  • Simple and yet brilliantly original car damage/pit stop system

  • Good variety of tracks with different routes

  • Car class system lets you pick the speed you want to race at

F1 RACE STARS™

F1 RACE STARS™

I really enjoyed this game and I think that my playtime proves it. However, I feel that this enjoyment comes from being a part of a specific generation rather than the game’s own strengths. When I was a kid, all of my friends stopped whatever we were doing to watch Schumi’s legendary, record breaking 2002 Championship in a country where football is inconceivably more important than any other sport. I also remember a day at the mall when I found a demo Nintendo DS with Mario Kart at a store, playing and mastering it for hours while my parents were shopping. Last one is skipping school countless times to play Blur (2010) with my friends at an internet cafe, finally thinking that PC had a viable Mario Kart competitor.

F1 Race Stars

A competent and challenging kart/arcade racer

F1 Race stars is a Kart Racer/Arcade racer set in the 2012 F1 season with all real drivers and teams. The game is in the same sort of league as Mario Kart and Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing. Not quite as fast paced but at times more challenging.

No drifting here, Unlike most Kart/Arcade racers where drifting is needed to win, drifting does not feature at all in this game. However you are required to approch corners with a more realistic racing line using your brakes. On kers corners you charge up your kers in the corner by keeping the car controlled and releasing when you leave the corner. If you go into a corner at full speed you will crash.

FAST BEAT LOOP RACER GT | 環狀賽車GT

FAST BEAT LOOP RACER GT | 環狀賽車GT

Fast Beat Loop Racer GT is a game similar to the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune game series. You pick your car and then race on the highway - a simple yet exciting concept.

Except, last time I saw this game was at a local arcade, and that was a few years ago.

This time, we’ve got a nice PC port, which is what I’ve been waiting for since there’s not many arcade games getting ported to PC.

First of all, this game is slightly different from WMMT. Cars feel more grippy, and you have to initiate drifts instead of sliding because the control is slippery (the cars still do that, but in a more realistic way). Fast Beat Loop Racer GT also implements the drafting system, unlike WMMT.

Got this on sale, and for the money, this is really the best Asian Arcade style racer on Steam. Works great with a steering wheel and pedals. The arcade feel is really captured well, as it is a direct port of the arcade game. Some people say this feels more like real street racing than Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune or Initial D.

I wouldn’t know. I’m here to play video games, not pretend that I have a different hobby.

The music is not nearly as good as those other two games, and I highly recommend putting a playlist of other stuff on in the background to drown out the generic rock/dance. Put on some tunes from one of the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tunes, and I don’t really think you could tell the difference unless you were a fan of the manga.

Ridge Racer™ Unbounded

Ridge Racer™ Unbounded

Great game, tons of fun… but also frustration. I managed to finish it today after installing it at least 3 times since I got it. somehow along the way I remeber I lost all my progress for some reason, I’m not sure what happened.

Anyway. The game still looks pretty and is still a blast to play, especially the domination races. The domination races are basically normal races where you race through city districty and drift to gather turbo points.

You get turbo points even when you are near an opponent, you gain them even quicker when there are many opponents around you. You also gather turbo points by smashing things. Gathering turbo points is the same for every race mode, and there are several.

Ridge Racer: Unbounded was, to me, a very fun, yet repetitive racing experience.

(Be prepared to read a VERY descriptive review. TL;DR is at the bottom.)

The game’s introduction is very simple, and explains to the player how Shatter Bay came to be, only to turn into a urban playground for the Unbounded. As a beginner, the player is convinced by the hashiriya master to join the Unbounded, and seeks higher recognition by moving up the ranks.

Now, if you’ve played any of the Ridge Racer titles preceding this one, you’ll find that this particular title mostly leaves any traditional aspect of the older games in the dust. However, do note that Unbounded was produced alongside major game developer Bugbear Entertainment, the same folks behind the Flatout series and, most recently, Next Car Game: Wreckfest. Bugbear’s role in developing Unbounded was one of the major factors in producing this game.

PART 1:

======

I really don’t know what the most negativ reviews expected but it’s like they did not really played the game. Yes - it is not a racing simulation but neither is the F1-Series from Codemasters! Yes the F1-Series is a bit closer to a simulation but it is nothing compared to Assetto Corsa (both), iRacing, RaceRoom and so on.

So what can you expect from PROJECT CARS 3? A FUN GAME! JUST ENJOY THINGS AGAIN!

Real player with 67.5 hrs in game

EDITED: After months of waiting for them to improve this game I’m changing my review from positive to negative. There has been a complete lack of transparency from SMS and they decided to release a terrible DLC as opposed to focusing on fixing bugs and improving the overall quality of their product. Even when asked, SMS said that they are focused on fixing bugs and not on future content. The next update was, you guessed it, the DLC and a few bug fixes.

So I’ve played both PC1 and PC2 and I can say that this is nothing like those two games. It takes a completely different direction that isn’t at all Simulator, and I believe it shouldn’t be called Project CARS. But hey! Brand recognition, amirite?

All-Star Fruit Racing

All-Star Fruit Racing

And now, My review of all-star fruit racing for Steam. The Kart driving system is very familiar for those who play Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing Series. It has some standard game modes other traditional Kart racers. Single Race. Championship. Time trial. And that’s pretty much it other than create your own playlist of tracks. Customizing your cosmetic karts say something I always do ever since modnation racers. There are some playable characters each with their own signature item to wipe out your competition. I do love Cherry because the speed boost to provide some good speed runs for me. It has slick number of courses spread across different Islands. The tracks name is pretty much forgettable but at least I know how to memorize the track layouts though. Online multiplayer I think I never play only multiplayer I wish people could hit me up and see how well the internet connection on this thing has. This game has one DLC and me was quite disappointed. I wish 3Dcloud.It would support this game little more so it could be worthwhile of replaying it. Griffin Glee it’s gorgeous thanks for the power of the unreal 4 engine. Overall it’s basically Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing with healthy fruits to snack on.

Fruity Cart Racer with some fun gameplay.

Similar to the likes of F1 All-Stars/ Speed Freaks/ Crash Team Racing/ Sonic All-Stars.

This most unique part of this game has to be the combining of pickups to allow you some choice over the powerup you create and use.

The pickups are separated into four “seasons”, represented by certain fruits, plus a bonus fruit which acts as a topup for all the fruits.

You can enable/disable what fruits you use, which impacts on what powerup you create. For example, you join 2 fruit and it might give you a power up that gets dropped, affecting the cars behind you, while joining to others might result in a power-up that shoots forwards affecting a car behind, and so on. If you collect all four of them, and combine them all, it give you a super - which is unique to the character you use. For Cora, the character I chose to use for most of my racing, she gets a Big Coconut that gets bowled, and all the opponents that might get in it’s path are squished momentarily.
