Tank Brawl 2: Armor Fury

Tank Brawl 2: Armor Fury

[received the key for free to help out a little with beta testing, but would have bought it anyway]

First of all my kids and I loved the first Tank Brawl. It was just this fun simple tank game that reminded me of NES days with tight controls and arcade-like levels. Sure it had its glitches and imperfections but it was charming and we wanted more. The devs heard our plea.

Some years later they bring us Tank Brawl 2. The graphics have improved, they managed to fit the entire campaign on a single map w checkpoints and they tried to do some interesting things that are outside of the box.

For an unknown game from a two persons vietnamese studio that’s only been tried by less than three hundred players, I was pleasantly surprised to find it actually quite fun and well made!

With its vibrant colors, pudgy enemies, short engagement ranges, and screens filled with bright bullets, it looks quite arcadish. But there’s no forced scrolling: I was still always in control of where and when to go. Though it’s not really free roaming, more like sequences of screen-sized canyons and walled arenas, with a couple secret paths. I was also free to choose between different views, from vertical top down camera, to a near horizontal view, and some inbetween, with controls adapted to each: for example in top down, the screen doesn’t rotate, and the right stick is the turret direction, while in more angled views, the right stick is the turret rotation, and the camera follows the line of fire. Not sure it’s clear, but ah, my point is the control scheme changes to best fit the camera. I used a gamepad and didn’t even try KBM btw.

Armored Warfare

Armored Warfare

I really had high hopes for this game, not because I thought it was better than World of Tanks or War Thunder, but because it had a mode that those other two games does not, that is, PvE. When you grow tired of the 15 vs. 15 idiot-fest that the other games become, you can play Armored Warfare and fight computer controlled opponents. Sure, you still have to deal with 4 other humans, but usually one or two of them go link-dead during the battle or stay along the edge of the map and out of your way.

A good idea run into the ground by greed, incompetence, and toxicity.

This game was originally made by Obsidian and despite meddling by My.com to make it more like World of Gold Shells, a lot of the old Obsidian magic still does shine through in the PVE content.

Unfortunately, this game is currently in the hands of My.games which is an incredibly cynical, lazy, and just generally unethical company.

Pay-to-Win Matchmaking

In addition to the usual pay-to-win upgrades and OP premium weapons which exist in many such “live-service” games, the devs now even sell pay-to-win matchmaking to “allow for more comfortable gameplay” for people who use premium currency to purchase “Battle Hardened status” for their vehicles.

Crash’em Derby

Good Morning, Afternoon, & Evening.

This game is hard hitting, barrels exploding, cars flipping, machine crunching, crash’em action. 8 different arenas that you can customize. Sunny, Rainy, n Snowing. wait there is more?!?! Morning, Noon, Evening, & Night Modes, adding to the customization of the arenas. Definitely one of the most fun Twitch interactive chat games that I’ve played. Has a local leaderboard to see whose top player in your channel. Global leaderboard for that prestige of being the top of the “circuit” worldwide!

Binx.tv are an awful company that exploit streamers by adding unsolicited bots to streamer’s chats and incentivising fake raids in return for viewers gaining currency on their own platform to spend on in-game microtransactions. Worse yet - they don’t allow you to unlink your social profiles from their platform for 100 days after linking your account. Stay away from this predatory service and any game that utilises it.

Star Control III

Star Control III

This game gets a lot of flak for not being Star Control II. However, on the whole it plays very well. The diplomatic puzzles are of the same calibre if not better, the Story is pretty much exactly where you’d expect the story to continue from the last game. On the whole, it’s pretty fun.

There are a few things in the game that disappoint, and on a replay 25 years after I originally played it, the come off as little more then a game that was rushed to market. Land grinding has been replaced with a colony building system which feels like they were trying to (poorly) copy civilization games (or maybe master of Orion?) games of the day. But managing colonies does little to speed the game along other then sacrificing ship production for fuel production if you manage to run out of gas. And that’s all the part of the game ads up to: establishing little more then an inter-stellar network of fuelling stations. There’s a lot of potential in this, but rather then fun at all it’s a meaningless chore and a distraction.

Like Star Control: Origins is a reinvention of Star Control II, Star Control 3 was (and is) a bad, mid-90s attempt to re-invent the original Star Control. I’m a big fan of the Star Control series and played them as a kid starting with SC1 in the early 90’s.

Gone is the Hyperspace with galactic borders of SCII and in comes the 3D starmap and colony building of Star Control 1, re-imagined with Accolade’s attempt at the “hyper realism” that was in vogue in the mid-late 90s. Colors, music, and art is all muted and gray, set in a new quadrant devoid of all life.

Diesel Guns

Diesel Guns

(VERY LONG EARLY ACCESS POST)

Nowadays is really hard to find some good drive combat videogame, and while Diesel Guns is still in developement, it is still promising and has a good foundation.

Sayd this, maybe is because of it’s Early Access nature but there are things that definitely need improvement in order to make it a good game that can bring back the Drive Combat genre.

First off, let me list what’s good about it so far:

  • Good weapons variety. I especially like that you can choose which weapons to equip for each kind, and apparently it seems there will be more in the future.

Real player with 10.7 hrs in game

If you’re a fan of games like Hardware: Rivals and Vigilante 8, you’ll love this game. the balance of weapons seems just about perfect, and so does the gameplay. Everything just works great. The speed and pacing is perfect. You’re never struggling to try to make a certain mechanic like, ramming or ground pounding work right, it’s not TOO easy either, but it just feels… GOOD when you use it. as of right now, the game is severly lacking in overall content due to it being an early access alpha title, but what’s there will make the gameplay feel near complete when you’re in a deathmatch and blowing up enemies! But for $5, it’s absolutely worth the current state that it’s in.

Star Age: Space Combat

Star Age: Space Combat

A promising game; similar to star fox, but it’s all space pvp. It moves away from the “big battleship” kind of gameplay you’ve come to expect from space shooters these days. Still rough overall, but if you enjoyed star fox: assault’s space multiplayer, you’ll want to wish list this game for sure.

Star Control I and II

Star Control I and II

For starters, I have loved this game since playing it on my 3DO as a child, and being frustrated (along with my father and brother) because of the difficulty. I saw that this was on sale and bought it for nostalgic purposes, and to get a little bit of the beta for Origins. I started the first Star Conrol, and for its time, that was a fun game. Minus an alluring storyline and multiple outcomes of a vast galaxy when compared to the second, I keep that game for back up. Thrilled to start the second one again and delve into childhood wonderment and anguish I’m sure, I was beyond bummed to find out that the PC verson, even this UPDATED awesome steam launch, doesn’t have audio files for the characters and aliens you meet. . . . Huge bummer, I am praying that they get an update out there that ports over the amazing 3D0 voices, because it completely changes the games feel and narrative. Overall, still excited to get the chance to play this amazing game again, and discover all the races and hidden artifacts that my child mind was too ignorant to strive for. Recommend this game completely, but 3D0 OG’s, be prepared for a kick in the feels when that first Ur-Quan drone hails you.

While i don’t have much experience with StarControl1, like many i DO have experience with StarControl2!

In my opinion, not only SC is on the Top 5 Sci-Fi universes, but on the Top 10 of best games!

Now, StarControl is not for everybody, it’s very old for today’s standards, and it’s very clunky to play, the game is very Lore Based, there is Much talking and it can be VERY slow

But the game got Charm, a Cute but Dreary style shows an universe enslaved by a Cruel race, but also shows it has Beauty and Humor in it!
