SGS Afrika Korps

SGS Afrika Korps

I came across SGS Afrika Corps via a Youtube “First Look” video which then led me to a couple more in depth videos. After watching those and the Developers own short tutorial videos I was hooked!

Why? Because I think it is a nice blend of complexity and simplicity combined in one game. I like a game like this that offers a variety of interesting scenarios, some short, some longer. That can be played in an evening or longer depending on the scenario. The variety of cards that can come into play adds variety in playing the scenario. There’s a lot of thought one must give in choosing which card or cards to play and when to do so.

A nice old school wargame. You can lead the Axis or Allies troops in the North African front. The game offers the possibility to play the major battles plus a long campaign lasting from the early 1941 to late 1942. The gameplay reminds a classic board-game stile, the counters are informative and beautifully crafted, every turn consists of a number of phases in which you draw and play event cards, place reinforcements, move air wings, troops and resolve battles. The event cards impact the units combat values, boost the troops supply, add extra reinforcements, impact leaders and so on.

Looks great. Could be great .

However there are a some serious bugs that make the game not really playable. At least , not faithful to the board game.

The card that makes a noble switch sides , should be decided on a die roll. I have seen that card come up four times, and it was successful each time. Could happen, but there is no dice rolled in the graphics makes me thing otherwise.

The main attack force and the reserves is the biggest problem, that is just chosen randomly by the computer.

Naval movement only allowed me to move one unit. And then asked me if i was sure , when i pressed NEXT. So the game at some level know i was allowed to move anther unit , but would not let me.

The game requires some serious polish.

Besides a weak AI (more or less acceptable), coding is sometimes faulty.

The game hangs randomly due a fatal bug during wintering phase that turns it totally unplayable with either Scots or Brits. From time to time the cards drawing enters in a wierd loop.

Also noticed that picking destinations at the end of the turn are some times ignored, like Wallace unable to move to the forest, or nobles unable to pick specific castle.

There are some other improvable usability annoyances.

Winter War

Winter War

A strategy game, with fluid game-play. The Winter War scenario is presented with good accuracy, with the large Soviet juggernaut with seemingly inexhaustible reinforcements against the smaller, but more mobile and skilled Finns.

Though the AI has its hickups, playing PBEM against a human opponent is good fun, where the scenario really comes alive. With a determined foe, playing as Finns, it’s very much possible that even an experienced player finds the Finns running out of reserves and replacements, like happened during the real war. There’s some replay value with the card system, and a (very unlikely) possibility for some foreign aid to Finland.

Nice Interface. Really like this game. As someone else said, adding the Continuation War as purchasable DLC would be great. Does a card release the Finnish reserve units that you can’t move? I did notice a couple of bugs. I played the 1939 scenario as the USSR and things proceeded normally. I then played the same scenario as the Finns and the 4 turn scenario proceeded to turn 5 and the game ended after turn 5. I could not manually save the final game. The game would always do an autosave and go back to the beginning of nonexistent turn 5 and play that through again each time and then conclude the game. I played the Mannerheim scenario as the USSR and the number of turns was right but I could not manually save at the end. The game autosaved and goes back to the final Finnish move and plays it out each time I open the autosave. I attached a screenshot of the 5 turn 1939 scenario. You’ll notice it says “End of Turn 5” and “5/4”:

The souls series is one of my favorite series ever, and this game is no different. ignore the hate for this game, its a good game, its just a 9 in a series of straight 11’s, one of the games has to be at the bottom and it just so happens to be this one, but that does not make it a bad game. I would recommend this game to all, including souls vets who have never played it and anyone new trying to get into the series.

ORION: Prelude

ORION: Prelude

Many people asked me about the game „Orion: Dino Horde“. So I have written a review now. ^^

First I have to say that the game has just 36/100 Metascore. But the Metascore was for the game “Dino Beatdown”, not for “Orion: Dino Horde” and the game hasn’t only changed the name, its totally different now.

For many people it’s still not a good game, because of a not perfect graphic (uff.. for me the graphic looks alright – I would give for it 7/10 points. – You can take a look at my Screenshots), some bugs (really the most Shooter Multiplayer Games have bugs/glitches…) and the not so realistic weapon sounds or I DON’T KNOW WHY!

UPDATE : ORION PRELUDE

There simply aren’t enough games with dinosaurs & even fewer of these that are actually worth playing! For me, Orion: Prelude (O:P) is that rare exception. Although not much in way of a story in the game (no single player after all), there is quite a tale on how Orion came to be the game it is today…

The short version is, that O:P is an evolution of previous Orion titles, Dino Horde & Dino Beatdown originally dating back to a successful 2011 Kickstarter campaign. Although recieving early criticism (that would normally kill a game ..dead.. disappearing into obscurity), the game continued to evolve with constant updates (big & small) over the years from the developers. Spiral stuck with it! This dedication & gradual refinement of the game has resulted in an excellent first-person co-op experience, with a well rounded collection of modes, weapons, enviromental effects, vehicles & more to enjoy.
