Angels of Death

Angels of Death

This is my first time writing a review, which is something that I generally won’t do, but I feel that this game was special enough that it really deserves it. This review is spoiler-free, as the story is by far best enjoyed going in with as little knowledge as possible. If you haven’t already, I recommend not reading the chapter summaries posted on the store page. They don’t contain any key spoilers, but some things are far better left as surprises. By the way, yes, you have to play the chapters in order.

First of all a question to whichever genius wrote this story.

HOW?!

How do you create something that is both ****ed up and ****ing beautiful at the same time?

I do not want to spoil the story because it is best experienced blind, in fact I’m very glad I got around to playing it rather than watching a let’s play as this is one of the best game narratives I’ve experienced in a while. The main crux of it really focuses on the growing bond between Ray, a teenage girl who wants to die, and Zack, a ruthless serial killer, as they leave the building together with the promise that Zack will kill Ray once they’ve escaped. From there we go to each of the floors, which have their own unique killer to run from and puzzles to solve. I loved encountering each new threat, every character was extremely memorable and each one presented a different type of challenge to overcome. But it really is the relationship of Ray and Zack that pushes a lot of the emotional scenes, in fact it’s quite unreal how much my heart aches at some of these scenes (I should not want to hug a killer as much as I do playing this).

Gyromancer

Gyromancer

It feels a bit weird not recommending a game I’ve put so many hours into. If you just want to pour a bunch of relatively mindless hours into a game, with maybe two or three periods of “OMG I’m never going to beat this particular monster,” Gyromancer might be for you. However, it has some serious weaknesses.

Its main problem is that it’s badly designed. When I first started playing, it was incredibly difficult. It seems like the enemy beasts were way overpowered, and I struggled to live long enough to gain the experience points necessary to level up. After a bit of grinding, the game became much easier. Because I’d tried playing Gyromancer a few years back, I knew that grinding was a very important, so I spent some time getting each stage’s in-game achievements (there are no Steam achievements) before moving on. This leveled me up enough that, usually, the next stage didn’t instantly kick my butt. So far so good.

Not sure why i’ve decided to buy this game after i have tried a demo many years ago. Maybe i thought it would have more things later in the game. But the game is more of the same stuff and it gets too repetitive and boring fast. Also the vague story telling doesn’t help to improve impressions. Dialogs are often weird, story twists are silly and confusing. Hero controls on the global map are annoying. Connecting 3 items (or more) in a row by rotating a square of 4 items clockwise is a bit of too much. One has to have a very good spacial imagination to quickly see combinations. Enemies don’t have to do that, so this is a bit unfare. They use your combinations for resources for their attacks. Also you don’t just have to make your attacks, but proactively remove enemies attacks from the board. It quickly becomes very frustrating as game starts to introduce more blocks (locking certain items, making enemies' attacks to trigger faster, punishing for idle rotating of items, etc.). And the attacks your monsters have don’t matter much. Yes, some trigger faster and do less damage, but you still just connect lines of items all the time without keeping much attention to them and the attacks trigger automatically. Puzzle Quest is way better in this regard, where you have to select what attacks to equip, when to trigger them and it actually matters what colors you connect. This game also has steep difficulty curve. You run easily through one stage and then stumble on another because monsters are much harder. Some challenges are based on simple luck (you have to make a cascade of 7 subsequent combinations, and you can’t really prepare the board for that, because the board is too small and you have to rotate 4 items at a time, so you just sit their and mindlessly rotate them hoping to get that challenge..).

Solid puzzle platforming in a unique world with an odd fitness theme giving way to a positive message about wellness and self improvement. Good graphics, puzzles, and scripting. Core mechanics are competent and fun but overall structure is much looser. This has elements of a free roaming RPG or metroidvania and that part of it takes some patience. Recommended for players who like to find secrets and be thorough.

Post yfw /fit/ couldn’t outlift it’s autism, so it made a fridge mode dyel that could. Space Pedro mogs every other protagonist ever, and a planet of onions all while wall clipping on a landscape with programming more broken than OP’s will to live. Dangerously based/10. Would play again.

Sudoku RPG

Sudoku RPG

Like Sudoku on steroids, its a speed variation of the classic puzzle game. The game expands on a local world map with 5 worlds each containing 9 mobs and 1 boss with increasing difficulty. There are some sparse rpg elements which add to the experience. My run to the final boss lasted for 8 hours on a slow pace, so its worthy of the asking price. There is an endgame and achievements for the perfectionists so the game might last even longer. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I suggest it to those who are skeptical about it. IMO one of the best “small” puzzle games on steam.

Very fun concept and pretty well made. I didn’t exactly know what to expect when I first saw the game but I was surprised at how well the game was put together.

I will say that the game is relatively short and if you’re pretty good at sudoku, this game won’t take you long at all. I hope they are to add some sort of extra content/dlc story down the line.

The text from characters you meet along the way are fun. I was a little startled when I entered area 2 to be called a retard by a little green mushroom, to which I pummeled him in a matter of seconds.

Excellent horror story and puzzles. I enjoyed the way the more complex puzzles were organic to the story rather than being just puzzles for the sake of puzzles.

Especially enjoyed the metagame puzzles :)

FYI - my hours are little overstated since I left this on my computer one day, but I would say to get all the achievements and the final ending would have taken me about 20 hours. Great game!

I’ll be looking for more from developer For7s.

Last Dream: World Unknown

Last Dream: World Unknown

Last Dream: World Unknown is an ambitious game. It is a sequel to Last Dream, a game that if it were released on the Super Nintendo, would have been as highly regarded as Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, in my humble opinion.

One thing that stood out to me is the balance. There are 6 difficulty levels, from very easy to legendary, and they are extremely well balanced. Since you can import your characters from Last Dream, or have the option of starting a new high level party, balance is extremely important. I wouldn’t have expected a sequel to be so challenging and the level progression to work so smoothly, but it does.

Real player with 138.8 hrs in game

Even better than the original.

Last Dream was “classic fantastic” because it recaptured all the best RPG elements of my youth.

Last Dream - World Unknown elevates this loving attention to NES/SNES/N64 detail into an even more refined experience.

Tons of content and a 919-page guide!

The characters are more vibrant, the dungeons are more clever, the battles are more challenging, and the music is more attuned to the wonderfully varied settings within World Unknown. Players of Last Dream will recognize that the devs' talents have deepened considerably. I won’t spoil it here, but multiple surprising new experiences await in just the first few hours, and after downloading the 919-page Strategy Guide, I can see that there are more surprises still!
